theres a few ways, but both ways use the same trick

one way, i use my 3rd finger cos of how i hold my plectrum

another way, use the plectrum

another way, use the tip of ur thumb

anyway, down to it.

when u hit a note, any note, try and hit the string with ur thumb/finger/plectrum ALMOST straight after hitting the string properly with ur plectrum like u do for every other note u play. if u get me.

this gives the string 2 hits, one with the plectrum and one with the thumb/finger. u must time it just right and with alot of fiddling u will find the right timing and position of ur fingers to get it. u almost have to make sure they both hit at the same time.

its quite hard to do.

i think the physics behind it, is cos ur creating more "nodes" and "anti nodes" of the sound wave created, thus making it have a higher frequency, which is the totally mint sound !!

have a fiddle, hope i explained that ok, cos it does sound confusing. anymore help just ask

Just think of it as a natural harmonic, except done with your picking hand over the pickups while fretting a note.

Try and sustain the note by waggling the string, and touch the string lightly with the side of your thumb. It also makes a difference where you do the harmonic so play around. And of course, the more distortion the better.

what's the difference between a natural and a artificial harmonic?

btw, this thread would fit like a glove in the musicians section

A natural harmonic is done right over a fret, usually the 12th, 7th or 5th (a harmonic at the 17th fret sounds the same as the 7th). It sounds a bit like a bell. See intro of Metallica's Sanitarium.

Pinch harmonics are the same thing as artificials
