Title: Audiosurf: Ride Your Music
Post by: SomethingApt on January 19, 2008, 07:54:23 pm
I registered for the beta of Audiosurf (http://www.audio-surf.com/) the other day, and was e-mailed a download for it today. Quoted from the website:

"Audiosurf allows you to experience the intensity and emotion of your songs in real time, in full color, and in 3D. Songs that give you an adrenaline rush are converted into wild roller coaster rides full of color and motion. Songs that calm you down appear as cool colors against a relaxing sky. Audiosurf enhances the experience of your music collection by synchronizing its environment to the events in your songs--the beats, the intense sections, the long pauses followed by a burst of sound, all take on a more vivid meaning.

In Audiosurf, you race down a futuristic and colorful highway. The highway, the traffic patterns, and the scenery are all synchronized to the music you have chosen from your own collection. You earn points for clustering together cars of the same color on the highway, and can compete with others on the internet for the high score on your favorite songs. Audiosurf builds a highway for any music CD, MP3, iTunes M4A, WMA, or OGG song you choose, so the experience that you have is totally up to you.

Inside every song you own there's an immersive experience waiting to come to life through Audiosurf---ride your music."

Played it a bit today, and it's DAMN fun!! You can just wack any of your own songs into it and it generates a level for you to play. It comes out in February, so keep an eye out for it!

EDIT: Uploaded a vid of the game, playing Origin by none other than Machinae... Crappy sound quality, but you get the point...

That looks really cool. In fact, I signed up to the mailing list before I watched your video and it looks very good. I especially like how the track white'd out when the song went silent at 3:45.

How much space did it take up on your PC?

The installer was about 65 megs big, can't remember how big the actually directory was though.

I'm seriously addicted, going to be pretty pissed off when the beta ends. fortunately the final thing is out in feb.

It's amazing the way the track reacts to different songs. Ilyena by The Mars Volta is fucking fun because it constantly slows down and speeds up. Pounding by Doves makes the entire track wobble up and down most of the way through... And when i was playing Catalyst by Oceansize the track corkscrewed about halfway through the song, really wasnt expecting that!

I usually "experience the intensity and emotion of my songs" in real time by falling semi-conscious and having those funny dreams about what I'm currently listening to, but that way looks like fun, too. Wonder how it'd work with speedcore... and if it's too late to sign for the beta event... I've entered my email address but received no reply so far.

I was watching videos on Youtube last night (after yours). DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames and Muse - Knights of Cydonia were amazing and Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out had that fantastic wobble too.

I really really want it. It looked SO COOL

@Aeon: I entered my email too, but I think we were too late. Not long to wait I guess, doing a lot of waiting atm...

EDIT: Just watched one of Blur - Song 2 too. Very cool.

Mine has also ceased working.

I suspect the weekend Beta period has ended.

Meaning no more audiosurf until next beta / release.

This makes me a sad panda.

Hah, I got mine to work. I downloaded a program called audiosurfboard that um, makes it work. I don't think you can submit scores though.

This was pretty awesome. I saw two tracks corkscrew, Through the Fire and the Flames by DragonForce and Remember Tomorrow by Iron Maiden (I was a DragonForce fan before their recent popularity, and I want a damn T-shirt that says that). Through the Fire and the Flames was insanely difficult, at least on ninja, and Remember Tomorrow was a really fun song to play. The ones with lots of tempo changes are the most interesting ones. Did one of the songs on Lykathea Aflame's Elvenefris album too.
Also did The Red Telephone by Love and some Masugn songs. And then I realized that I have school in 7 hours and maybe should get some sleep. Damn.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I found that Strapping Young Lad is way harder than DragonForce. Their songs are shorter in general though.

Yes, the current beta weekend has ended... I'm guessing there won't be another beta, what with the final release in feb. Might have to try that audiosurfboard thing, im really fucking addicted! definitely gonna give it a purchase when the full thing is available.

Yup, mine still works. Just did Infinite Dreams by Iron Maiden and Lost in Moments by Ulver. Two complex masterpieces. I think both did a corkscrew, not sure about Infinite Dreams. Really fun songs to "ride" either way.

To make audiosurfboard work, uninstall and reinstall the game, and don't update the game.

That's how I made it work, you also have to fix your hosts file too. :P

Note that the first version isn't as nice as the latest one. :D

Just some minor awesome graphics additions and some bug fixes, and I am pretty sure that there are a few interface fixes, and there are some character fixes.

Oh yeah, and a new character too. :D

Alright, so, pretty much addicted to this game now. >_> Will most likely buy it when it comes out.

Also, I urge everyone with a working Audiosurf to try out Rex Regi Rebellis by Turisas in it. It's definetly not the hardest song in it, but of the songs I've played, it has been the most fun experience.

Do you have your hosts-file edited for the audiosurfboard thing? If so, try removing the changes. I think at least the forums were unaccessible for anyone with the hosts-file edited like that.

Just because i didnt see anyone else post it, this officially comes out on Steam this friday. If you're willing to part with your cash early of course you can pre order or pre purchase or whatever they're calling it these days from steam.

Personally, I'm just a little excited.

Steam's forum opinions are varied, but many Vista users seem to be reporting various bugs. No such problem on mine, and since i never played the beta i have nothing to compare it to, but i really like it so far :)

The scoreboards are still cheatable by changing the name of a song, but you can see the played track on the high score and report any abuse.
Other than that, just a few minor bugs for me. Mouse went invisible but still worked. Fixed after alt+tab. No big deal. I'm running Windows XP, though.

Hitting that first gray block so the entire run is wasted (since you can't get the stealth bonus) is so annoying. I mostly play Mono or Ninja Mono. I get confused if there's more than two colors ;D

Game is bugged to hell and back - especially if you have non-ASCII/Unicode song tags like me. They seemed to have rushed adding it in so it doesn't crash as much as in the beta, but it's still unstable. Bah!
At least I have Mono Pro now. I love that mode.

A good idea, I think a good place to post your Audiosurf name would be in this thread that already exists though  :) : http://forum.machinaesupremacy.com/index.php/topic,5933.0.html

Ill get into playing every MaSu song i have eventually im sure, and yes, pcg_donola is me, MMM is ollllllllllllllllld, i should change that, i havent been their guildleader for years heh

EDIT : On the bugs, ive had nothing but frequent server downs on audiosurfs side, which is probably to be expected mind. Also, for the tags, i just downloaded a random mp3 tag changer for some of mine, as nearly all of my music is mp3, worked a charm.

Oh my fucking god. Having not got Overworld yet i cant play those, but Trinity...what a ride! I loved it before but the game plays out the track to the music so well in that one.

Much much MUCH love for trinity! As for the score...

161,803, current top score in pro, beat that if you can! :)

Are you playing the cracked demo with audiosurf? The max track lenght in that is something like 10min, but in the full version it has been raised to 25min or so.

/me loads up Audacity and prepares for butcherage

I was just thinkin' on the way home from work, that we could maybe have MaSu forum surf-offs in Audiosurf. Like, pic a song, everyone has an X amount of tries on it in the assigned time (day, week, weekend, whatever. Doesn't matter for me), post scores / check them from the scoreboards. Then we'd declare the winner for that particular song, and the winner would choose the next song.

Now, one obvious problem we'd have with this is that all of us don't have all the same songs on our PC / on CD, so we could maybe limit it down to MaSu and Masugn songs? Another problem is, I guess, that not too many people on the forum have the full version of Audiosurf yet. :<
Also, we'd need to argue agree on which character to play. Either Ninja Mono or Mono Pro in my opinion.

Anyway, there's the idea in a nutshell, now to wait for someone else to bother with the detai- discuss.

Masugn is very hard indeed. I think Meatgrinder is even harder than Divine the Dogblood, though. In related news, I just got Ninja Stealth in March of the Undead. Glee.

I've only played mono until now, but I think I'm going to try to get into eraser soon.

I did, and I have to say; I'm somewhat impressed. First non-Masugn song that can get anywhere near Masugn in difficulty. Was fun. ^^

On the topic of characters: I'm too retarded for anything with more than 1 colour, so Ninja Mono all the way. Wish they'd add a Mono version for Double Vision, it'd be awesome me thinks.

It sure is. It seems I'll have to switch to Eraser to try and get that highscore back.

EDIT: Done. ;)

Second EDIT:

Yeah. I have to have all the graphical settings except for the resolution set to minimum to avoid my framerate dropping to ~30FPS. They've released a couple of patches, which should apparently make the game run better on some systems so you should probably try the newest version if you're interested at all. Could be that it runs smooth with the fixes.

Talking about sucky framerate, it's really hard to play with Fraps recording. Anyone know of some better recording program? I recorded my run of Meatgrinder (yaay, new highscore) yesterday, but it's kinda hard to keep track of the stuff happening on the video because of the framerate. Makes it a bitch to try to stealth fast songs, too.

That's weird. What do you mean you can't register? Did you play the cracked beta with Audiosurfboard? Someone in this thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=654998) on the Steam forums also had a problem with registering, and apparently it was fixed after he deleted the Hosts-file modifications. You don't happen to have XBCD drivers installed for some reason, do you? They're a known cause of a memory leak. Here's (http://www.audio-surf.com/forum/index.php/topic,1958.0.html) another thread about problems with logging in.

Also, that is a nice score at conveyer, don't think I can beat that right now.
And so you moved on to Empire, then.  ;D Oh, well, I guess that just gives me more motivation to finally get that song stealthed.

I forgot to include a link to my Meatgrinder video. Although it's not like you can make out a lot of it anyway due to the framerate. Anyway, here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyqVjWYt_Nk)

Thread bumping again.

I got this a few days ago. My boyfriend wanted me to play, and one of my friends bought the full version for me. Oh, my God. What fun.

Now I'm the kind of person who is really good at most (not all) music games. I'm a Heavy DDR player, I'm not too shabby on PPP... you get the picture. Based on this I thought I wouldn't be too bad at this game.

So after a failed attempt at playing it on my PC, I download it onto my mum's laptop. I found it really awkward at first. I didn't know how much time I had between blocks, i was slow, etc. I felt bad because my boyfriend had 4 of his achievements and I did not :( I went to bed sad that night.

Next morning I woke up and got 3 of my achievements in an hour. I have a fourth now, that he hasn't got. *e-peen +10*

MaSu scoreboards pretty quiet. Except for Caranfin who seems to be a one man army.

Caranfin used Trinity I believe, and elite eraser

That's right. Here's a screenie of the work in progress. I screwed up and accidentally picked up a blue on the green on my left lane. Couldn't get more than 17 whites. :<

I also did Laser Show just now. I was late taking a screenshot of the clusters without that purple in there, but you can see how that's going to result in four different colour clusters well enough.
(http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/5903/lasershowincomingtl0.th.jpg) (http://img362.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lasershowincomingtl0.jpg)

And my current achievement collection:

Gonna do some surfing now on the Webography FLACs. Wish me luck ;D

EDIT: Gah. This game makes me feel old and useless. My reaction times are way too slow to get stealth on anything but a slow and boring cheat song, and all the colors fly by so fast that I can't really make any calculated moves with Eraser either.

Also, the game takes away all the enjoyment I usually get from listening to music.

EDIT: Got Big Kahuna and updated the achievement collection screenshot. I has them all now, woo.
So that's how you did Laser Show. I'm thinking it might not be possible on Pro, but I doubt I can achieve anything but a headache on Elite. I'm thinking a mismatched row of crud for the first line, then a row of 3 white blocks, and an extra white block to stagger the line. Line up 4 rows - red, yellow, blue, purple - and then at the next white erase them.

Yes you can erase white. I've done it by accident.  >:(  :'(

How did you get Big Kahuna?

That might work. Might be easier on Elite, though, since it'll take a while to get those whites set up properly.

Pointman Pro on Trinity, because are no point multipliers on Elite. I just collected the whole board full of mismatched blocks, rode on the shoulder until I got a point multiplier and then hit the next red paint. Surprisingly easy, really. I think I just got lucky.

Hehe, yeah, I almost only play with pusher, don't like playing with mono all that much. Though I do play double vision with some of my friends, which is good fun! I've got all of the achievements but the two longer stealth masters, since I am not very fond of playing mono. Got Big Kahuna with Dual vision I believe, have made some truly awesome matches there (16k solely from red blocks, about 8k more from yellow ones.)

I actually aquired most of the achievements just playing along, while some of them may seem hard they get easy after awile, I almost always get spotlight finish now while playing with pusher elite, for example. And for laser show, I recomend using pusher, and playing a song where blocks come in groups of two or even three, get a couple of blocks at the bottom, the timer for blocks to disapear after they have been matched up is reset when you take new blocks, so just keep taking blocks and pushing different colors together. (I was trying deliberately to get that one, and failing. Then I got it when just playing along on another tune, though I can't remember which one.)

Okay, so I loved the demo and decided to buy it..

Do you get an error message or something or has Steam just not registered your purchase? The first thing to try is to restart steam completely and start it up again.

I actually read on the Steam forums that all you have to do is restart Steam, right after I posted that.
So yeah, now it's fine.

God, this is addictive.

Hehe. I don't think I'm that good. I might score really high with Ninja Mono, but I'm quite certain that a really good puzzle character player would have no problem with absolutely destroying my Eraser scores.

EDIT: And you don't seem to have a lot of problem with my scores either, Varys. I really can not beat your scores in Arcade and Soundtrack to the Rebellion. Not right now, at least. Sleep time. I'll have to try to get a match 21 myself on those songs tomorrow.

Yeah I have a bunch of new tricks, got really happy with my score on both Arcade and Soundtrack to the Rebellion. Will be doing my best to take the throne on other songs aswell :)

Have fun. I don't think I play Eraser enough to be able to compete with your scores any time soon. I still play Ninja Mono the most (still haven't stealthed all Masugn songs, damnit), but I'll have to look into an actual strategy for Eraser at some point. Until now I've just played it by the feeling. I've got a couple of ideas, but they will probably have to wait a few weeks.

I'll add both of you when I get home today. I'm wiinis ingame, feel free to add me aswell.

I still mostly play Mono, but have lately been trying to learn how to play Eraser and Pusher. By far it hasn't gone too well, keep overfilling and getting bad scores. Too retarded for more than 1 colour. Oh well, I still haven't stealthed all of MaSu anyway, gonna have to at least do that before getting too deep into puzzle-characters. :P

At least with the pusher, I recomend just ignoring all colours other than yellow and red unless you can get three (or more) in a row quickly, and try to keep it fas clean as possible at all times. It takes some time to get used to, I recomend playing slower songs in the begining (Dream Theater has some nice ones) I was practically unable to play Machinae tunes at first with Pusher; too fast.

So, I won't be here to get my thrones back next week as I'll be in Rome, and I expect to have my inbox full of Dethroned-messages when I get back. I'm looking at you, Varys. ;)  Go play Deus Ex Machinae, most of my scores on that album are absolutely horrible.

We shall see, have a whole bunch of other games I would like to play. On the other hand, the next week of school should be really easy, withouht much studies to do at home, so I should have some time at least :)

Not really sure on that, but I haven't yet ran into that situation, myself.

I don't play it as much as I used to when I first bought it, but I still play it fairly frequently. Especially when I download a new batch of songs.

I don't know, but you can still play the songs even if the game doesn't recognize the characters, right?

I only play Audiosurf occasionally nowadays, but I still think it's the second best (or so) purchase I've made this year. Right after Portal. :P

edit: Overworld fully stealthed, btw, and halfway through JnG OST. Easy does it, easy does it.

You can, but it'd be nice to have your score recorded properly. It either gets turned into a scrambled mess of letters/shapes, or copies the name of last song you played, for some reason - so you never know what scoreboard your being put down for. Plus, if it's audioscrobbling the random text mess, I'll be accidentally filling up last.fm with lots of dodgy artists.

I haven't played this game in ages. I should probably try to get back into it when I finally manage to get off my lazy ass and install Windows on my new computer. Who knows, maybe I could even get a faster screen refresh time than the 30 FPS I had on my piece of crap PC. :P

Yeah, so I've done and got windows installed on my macbook pro now. Thought I'd start playing Audiosurf again, and figured I'd ask if anyone here still plays. Does anyone know how far down the Machinae leaderboards I've fallen? It's going to be a fun challenge trying to climb back up again.

Oh right, this game. I might give it a whirl again when I get my moving-to-another-town shit done and over with. See if I can still spot some of my scores on the lists. :P
