Title: The Escapist Magazine
Post by: Chronologix on December 03, 2007, 07:11:02 am
a few of you already know about this....a wonderful little place where Game Reviews become riddles with negativity and a British accent that you cannot turn away from.

The sketches are wonderful (albiet mainly negative in exception for Portal) and by the end of each one you cannot help but laugh.

The reviewer, aptly named "Yahtzee"  has reviewed such games as BioShock, Halo 3, Paper Mario, and various others.

So watch a few, laugh a bit and think about what gaming USED to be, before it became a second job.

You know, Yathzee isn't the only part of Escapist.

He is, however, the awesomest game reviewer out there. Zero Punctuation rules.

The thing I like about him is that he IS right. Though he basically points out towards the bad things of a game, he IS right. He never says things that are untrue. That's what I really appreciate in his reviews. Though they might seem just funny or supposed to be humoristisch, WHAT he tells is true. That's cool! Check out the Bioshock review or the The Darkness demo impressions.

Yes he does actually review them. Have you even watched any of his videos? :P

I've watched 3 or 4, that's why I'm asking that question ;/

Despite the fact that he has an incredibly negative slant on his reviews, I have to say that most of his points are definitely valid, if a little nitpicky. But that's the point, his reviews are an alternative to a lot of reviews these days that seem to absolutely bum games and are too afraid to really go into detail on the things wrong with them.

Does he really review the games? Or does he watch a gameplay trailer and spend the rest of the time writing jokes to make fun of the game?

Very true. I recently watched the gamespot video review of GTA4. That was the most boring videoreview I've ever seen. Will be interesting if Yahtzee reviews it cause I have a feeling the statments in them are gonna be very very different.

I believe that he said he needed a bit more time to play GTA IV at the end of his last review. So he is going to review it at some point, at least. Probably this week.

Wow! That pretty much sums up my impression of GTA4. Especially the gritty/realistic look, and the Sims-like "friendship" gameplay. It sucks! Give me back Vice City! I hope they make an "expansion" just like it.
I'm not saying the game is bad or anything. The game mechanics are really nice, and the physics engine is funny as hell to play around with. But I really don't think it deserves the 10/10 scores that most review sites have given it.

well it's definately not something everyones into. i love the storyline myself, and i spent a bit of time looking into the previous installments (internet-wise) to see how it all links together.
and as for harveys statement, well, the same applies. i think the fact that almost half the game is cutscene based is awesome. but it isn't everyones cup 'o tea!

I like the fact that the games are very cinematic, that adds a whole separate level to it. And Kojima's motion capture and cinematics, and story-driven qualities are movie quality, which you rarely ever find in a game.

Oh yes. Dashing seems to give you some invulnerability frames, so if you time a dash with the shuriken's explosion, it doesn't do damage. Performing an obliteration technique or an ultimate technique will also make you invulnerable. It's a bit odd, really. Dashing works against the exploding shuriken in Xbox's Ninja Gaiden too, IIRC.

Funny really. I don't play that much games anymore. They do interest me but my life situation is not favorable to gaming. So I read about games and acquire few of the most interesting ones I've tried in case I have hour or two to play them. For me it takes certain mood to play certain game and I must have peace to play it. Combination of those are rare occasions in my life nowadays. Anyway, my point? I had some point, somewhere...

Oh yeah! It's funny that I don't play games that much. But I still have this inner urge to watch every episode that's posted on this thread. And I watch. And Yahtzee's style is personal torture to me, although being very pleasant one.

First of all, he talks too fast. I can keep on pace (listening wise) but it's still quite exhausting flood of images and talk. I do enjoy it though in some perverse way because it's bit like getting flooded by good smelling pink feathers.

Another thing is that he is so overly negative with games so it won't do good to my gaming desires. Partly this is because general points he makes are usually so accurate. And some of those points are one of those reasons I play so rarely nowadays... There's just so much junk out there! I might think differently on some points he makes on certain games but general remarks are often just amazingly, funnily right. His humour is great but little painfull.

So I watch and part of me suffers while other part laughs for his stories. And I do find it funny. Watching his stories always reminds me that there's gamer inside me, somewhere. Sucky one and suffocated maybe but it's still there. Well, I hope that gamer's day will come.

So yeah, basically my point was that Yahtzee's stuff is amazing.

His argument are spot-on, but he wasn't really funny this time. I reviewed the game last month and I was like "blergh" too. The game isn't really bad anywhere, it just SCREAMS mediocore! mediocore! mediocore! every 5 minutes.

Actually, it sucks.  :-\

I'm going to jump in, and give something some well deserved love from The Escapist:

Extra Credits (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/extra-credits?page=1)

It's a series on video gaming done by three people in the industry, an artist, a writer and a designer. They cover topics from game mechanics to content. 5 examples of things covered:

Video Game Music
Choice and Conflict
Day 1 DLC
Sexual Diversity in Games
Narrative Mechanics.

They do so with gentle, passionate class and insight, with no excesses of swearing or crude language for the sake of it. The most recent episode is Non-Combat Gaming, and it is updated every Thursday.

It gets 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up from me.

The dude often speaks too fast for me to understand everything and there does not seem to be any transcription of what he is saying on YouTube (i.e. subtitles). :/ That's what turns me away from these reviews. But other than that... They've got potential, I guess.

For non English speakers, I can understand your pain.
As I personally live near London, people can often talk as fast as that, so I'm pretty used to it. However, have you heard the French?

Dunno. How fluent are you, how long have you known English etc.
I'm not really a languages person, it's just I know a lot of the people on this forum are not natively English.

I was just joking :P, I do understand english quite well, be it either written or speak, but my pronouncing is quite shit and I still make a lot of mistakes while writing (though I make less mistakes in english than what I make in finnish ::)) .
