WHAT THE HELL IS SID????
maybe its a european thing cuz ive heard it all over this site in im so freakin confudsed!!!
Title: Re:Genre?
Post by: eleeton on April 26, 2003, 05:53:07 pm
this is an unsure answer but I think SID is the name of the soundchip on commodore 64.

And why it's affiliated with machinae is because one of machinae instruments is the sidstation. and what it sounds like, you can hear in the songs. Like bouff there's a lot of sidstation.

But this really is an uneducated answer. the band can tell for sure..

Yeah...Sidmetal sounds pretty good. It would be the first band in that genre too.

ok,  thanks for setting the bar.  Now go back to your wanking.

Anyway,  if you remove the "sid'ish" synths you end up with some kind of metal.  I dont care anymore so dont answer.

Genre means nothing. Whatever you make, make it great. That's what matters.
Title: Re:Genre?
Post by: Bavi_H on May 02, 2003, 06:34:11 am
I'm not too educated about many genre titles, but "alternative rock" works for me. Or maybe "synth". I don't think there's much need to invent a "SID" genre title based on one particular instrument they use (the SIDstation). Although most of their music at this point has game-inspired themes, calling the band's music "Commodore" or "Amiga" or "Nintendo" [?] seems a tad restrictive to me.

Neoblaze wrote:

Genres aren't entierly useless. They are a tool to help people find out what the band is. But I agree, ultimately, the band is unique.

I didn't mean that genres are useless. I meant that one should develop ones own style, and give the music a sense of personality through that style.

Personally I have used the term SIDMetal since Giana was released, but Heavy SID would be nice to...

And to put all 8-bit related music in one category is pretty stupid... especially Machinae since they are so much more than just a SIDstation...

Compare to http://www.covox.net/ wich is GameBoy music and while Machinae and Covox share some influences they sound nothing like each other...

SID btw stands for Sound Interface Device wich was what the soundchip in the C64 was called. The real name is MOS6581 wich I would tattoo in old english font on my belly if I could just afford it 8)

Heh, I opened one of my recent-aquired, non-functional C64 (the first model). And I have to say I was nearly sentimental when I saw the old MOS6481 shine through the dust :P

Anyway, one of my other working C64's haven't got any sound. Even through the Monitor-port (using it for scart). Is it possible the Sid has been broken? I wonder if I should try swapping (without destroying) the sid with the other non-functional one.

You could try it... but please... be gentle :)

I think one of mine has sound problems to...
I have a little collection of Commodores actually.
C=64 (old model but Im looking for a C=64 C to)
C=128
C=128 D (big chassi with built in diskdrive and separate keyboard)
Amiga 500
but the star of my collections is a C=64 Games System (console system with no keyboard) that actually still has the protective plastic over the cartridge-slot 8)

My working one is a C64C. The one without sound is a C64C with a C64-ii keyboard. (the special chars are on top of the keys). The non working is a C64 "breadbox". The power comes on, but the screen is garbled with colours and chars. And flickers in many colors. And there is a sound too. So I guess the cpu is fubar. I have the 128D too. But I'm missing a few keys in the keyboard, or else I would have used that.

I'm on the lookout for an Epyx fastload though. I had one of those back in the 80's. And it's the only one that works with the harddrive for the c64, since it doesn't attempt to change the speed of the drive.

I've seen pictures of the console. I guess it's pretty unique :) I wonder what happens if you plug a fastload into it ;)

I sold my baby way back too  :-[ Didn't have much money, so when I "upgraded" to an Amiga, I had to sell it. Now I buy from other people and on different web-sites.

I regret like hell... C64C, 1570 diskdrive and an Epyx fastload. *sigh* Those were the times.

bah, this is not powermetal..
SIDmetal was a good term..    or maybe BITmetal???
Machinae is the first band with this kinda sound but metal people just hate when a band "invents" a new genre..   damn!  we got too many!!   Symphony metal, hollywood metal, grincore, sleaze, death, doom, bla bla bla..  etc..

but if you want to call the genre something..  then Sidmetal is good. or Bitmetal..   i dunno..

Title: Re:Genre?

I follow her entire way down to last word. Yes. Genre's are necessarity for mankind to label things and put them neatly on different shelfs. It's just to protect innocent ;) I don't like labeling 'cause most of bands cannot be labeled. That's 'cause bands forms of individuals and individuals cannot be labeled. But you have to label things 'cause otherwise you don't know if it's bitter jam or sweet jam on the jar. And someone might be allergic to some jam. But when you know what you like and how does it seem and smell you don't need labels anymore. Just enjoy and leave other jars to people who must still read etiquette to know what it's like. Those people do not (most of times) have courage to taste little from every jar and they like to trust labels someone put them. I enjoy tasting several jars 'cause you always find some SWEET flavours you like and want to keep. But sidmetal is good 'cause there ain't such genre yet and I hope that there's people curious enough to taste it...Maybe I'm too optimistic but that's the way I think about it.

I applaud you for that "law and order"-bit... I'm very much like that myself.  ;)
And I do agree that genres are too confining, whatever you choose... We've been asked the genre question so many times it's sickening (and I guess that's why it's an issue on this forum... no one bloody knows) ...

To me, it seems like I could find answers to the genre question if I were allowed to look at individual songs, but not an overall genre...

Some bands though, who have the same beat, the same chorus and the same layout of every song probably deserve to be gen(e)ralized and labelled in that way.

I didn't say Linkin Park but you thought it! I kn0w j00 did!

Gravehill, perhaps it's time for an official machinae announcement.

"Try and label us, you bitchez". <-- here goes.
You and Sobella has made me realize what I'm going to answer the next time someone asks what genre machinae belongs to...

"Machinae Supremacy is beyond genres."

Thank you guys.

Cause machinae dodges genre labels like those matrix-Oppers dodge bullets. Feel that.  ;D

I think that there's no need to be sorry. Every idea is golden one. If your idea would not have come up how we would know how we feel about it? I think that being creative and letting you mind fly is good thing. Sure, someday someone might laugh at them but so they did to Galileo and Einstein too! If you have open mind you might find true gem someday. Holding back just make you lose power reserves so let them come out, your ideas I mean! And if someone have good idea from something you said even better!

I've always hated categorizing music in genres. It's just never fully right. Every genre has, it's sub-gernes, which in themselves have various tangeant, which are approached by a few bands, however differently in each song. In the end, every music piece brings something unique.

However, I'd settle for labelling Machinae Supremacy's music "Damned good music".
