Title: If you had to narrow down genres, what would MaSu be?
Post by: WilllemNL on January 31, 2012, 01:55:17 am
I'm a real freak when organising my music library. I don't want too many different genres, but not too few as well. I want the genres to be correct, but also not too deep into sub movements. So here I have this little problem...

MaSu is currently in power metal. I feel that isn't correct. They shouldn't be in heavy metal either. Perhaps alternative? That doens't really fit it either, though I'm not sure. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? As I don't have any other  bands in the SID-metal genre in my Zune library, I don't want to put in there really.

If it's not SID metal, it's just metal or - if you're stubborn - power metal. Simple as that. It ain't exactly dubstep or reaggae.

I'm not good with music genres, but I'm fairly sure their music is most of the time power metal or regular metal. That's the dominant genre, anyway, methinks.

Why wouldn't you want to put MaSu to the place what it deserves? The music they make is unnormal so the genre has to also be unnormal.
I have no trouble calling it SID metal, so I don't understand why you should have problems with it.

Personally not a big fan of genres.
But... Alternative Metal seems reasonable.

SID Metal is what MaSu is listed under on my iTunes.

Haha, well, for one, perhaps we are different people? Who view things in a different way? ;)

Anyway. Guess I wasn't that far off with power metal. The funny thing is, I really don't like power metal... I got a few Blind Guardian cd's, which I like, and I got The Black Halo from Kamelot, which is good. But for the rest, blurgh.  :-\

I'm going to ponder some more on this.

Well I have them listed in my Media Player as SID Metal. But if I had to call them anything else, I'd call them Electronic Metal

I suppose maybe Synth Metal? I don't understand how it could be just Metal or Power Metal. If you're a stickler for order, then fine tuning the genre tag is quite an important thing in music library organisation, and using such broad genre titles like Metal or Power Metal (especially when MaSu is so much more Electronic than those two) probably shows that you don't really care about the state of the genre tag anyway.

If I'd use a larger genre definition for MaSu, I'd definitely call them power metal.
I don't really see how the heavy reliance on synth sounds would make it belong less in the power metal genre. A lot of power metal bands make extensive use of keyboards and synth sounds (Warmen and Sonata Arctica are just two examples).

Hmm Power, Alternative, maybe progressive and sometimes on last.fm melodic death metal pops up I think.

Edit: Oh yes and metal.

Power Metal.

If you're trying to get real specific, you're going to need to page through and tweak the genre for individual songs. For instance, I feel that "Indiscriminate Murder" has a definite Fusion sound to it in addition to the base Power Metal.

But yeah, Power Metal overall, with some of their older stuff bordering on Hard Rock, despite not being "Rock" in the traditional sense.

This

And more on topic; I really don't feel power metal describes Masu, and neither does any other specific type of metal. I had Masu in its own SID Metal genre, but that doesn't really make any sense for searching, as I could just search for masu anyways... I ended up just sticking them in Metal.

They would be a melodic metal band.

To be honest, much like Gaijin, I would rather just say that the genre is "fucking awesome". But that's missing the point, isn't it. And makes me look uneducated. But there's so many genres! I don't know 'em all!
Also: lol, organizing music. My favorite artist is "Unknown Artist". You might be familiar with their works.
No, seriously, who cares about the tags other than Last.FMfags. You can probably find the track you need no problem on your playlist. Well all I need is a title in the file name and a working search engine.

well, most of today's mp3 players can sort your music according to them (though i never use the sorting according to genre). It is also part of unwritten netiquette to have your ID tags (at least "Album" "title" "track(_number)")  filled properly :).

You serious?! OMG! No wai.

If there's one thing I find fucking irritating related to computers, it's my music library not being sorted correctly.

Just to show you how my library looks like, watch this screencast:

It seems there are some drowning aliens in your house, Willem.

Lol WTF, hadn't checked the audio actually. Weird, 'cause I had my volume turned off the entire recording.

But if you listen carefully, you can actually make out that great Monster Magnet song.
