Title: Video Game Music
Post by: megashroom° on January 19, 2012, 04:23:16 am
How about we make a collection of the best game music in history? :D
Any system or genre goes. One game per post. Add Youtube links or similar (if available).

I'm starting off with something pretty obscure. A mecha run and gun game for the SNES called Cybernator.

First level track:

Cybernator is a game I haven't thought about it a long time. Now I'm thinking about Metal Warriors too... <3 SNES.

I'll toss Stargunner in, a DOS side scrolling shoot 'em up with fantastic music. It's also ball bustingly difficult, as I learned when I went back to it and world 1 handed me my ass on a silver platter on "normal." The good old days indeed.

I just want to link all of it, but I'll settle for the world 2 sector 3 music at the start of this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-XUTn2OG-M (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-XUTn2OG-M)

(full playlist here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKAwToteK1c&feature=BFa&list=PL081FA464DEED8F3E&lf=results_main) :D)

I think this is a great thread! +100000 Tom

My first console was the NES and it wasn't Mario, or even Zelda that got me addicted to Video Games or their Soundtracks. Even though I do like them a lot. What started my gamer addiction was: Mega Man. And for some reason I loved Proto Man's theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d30OSJkt7Dc&feature=related

Still do. It took me a while to weed through the remixes. There are some awesome remixes of this, but the original just holds a special place in my heart.

My first love (probably because I'm one of the youngest guys here) was Pokemon Yellow, so I'd definitely say the travelling music on the routes. I'd link to it, but I cannot find a copy on YouTube at the moment.

Though my first gaming experience was Super Mario on NES, the soundtrack from where I get the most nostalgic memorie is from Jazz Jackrabbit 2. I was quite addicted to it and I used to play it over and over again.

And ofc JNGG has to be mentioned   ;)

There are some games with good music, I wanted to put jj2 here, but it's taken already, so Tyrian goes:

couldn't decide which song to choose, so:
Rock Garden

Great submissions peeps. The nostalgia is through the roof.
The music from Jazz Jackrabbit (2 in particular) is so brilliant.
Stargunner is a game I've not heard of. But all those Apogee games had such a special flavour. Much thanks to the soundtracks.
Tyrian is also a good one.

Throwing in some Final Fantasy here, XIII-2 even.
It's not released in Europe 'til February So I've yet to play it. The soundtrack gives a mixed impression but some of the music is downright incredible.

Holy shit, man. I didn't even remember that game. I used to play Jazz Jackrabbit and the sequel like crazy.

Hmm, let's see. One game per post? Hot damn, you guys better keep the responses coming or I'll feel an urge to double-, triple-, hell, quintuple-post or something. Oh well, let's begin with Okami. The OST has like 5 CDs, so you'll excuse me if I post a whole bunch of links.

Reset (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRx9gnY0Mp0&fmt=18)
The Sun Rises (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya3yxTbkh5s&fmt=18)
Shinshuu Plains (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yKG-Qu4WvM&fmt=18) <- That, ladies and gentlemen, is music for walking around. That's right, fetch quests are downright epic in this game.
Shachimaru's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkLC0kX8FSI&fmt=18)
Okikurmi's Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PybX2Rt7dg4&fmt=18)
Yamata no Orochi's Extermination (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6tpHadIBMc&fmt=18)
At Last the Time Has Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VSXdXPBCfg&fmt=18)
Northern Country Kamui (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpcZILkffpw&fmt=18)

Uh, yeah, that's like half an hour of music. I think I'm done for now.

I'm afraid I have to agree. My ears start to hurt after a couple of notes.

Well, in my case, I'd probably go back to the C64. Lots of good stuff, but I think if I have to choose one game to post, it will be one of the Last Ninja games. For example The Wastelands from LN 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOmin4vmMts&feature=related).

That's pretty badass. C64 was before my era, so I've missed out on most of it. More SID recommendations are very welcome.

Now, this thread cannot go on without a dose of Touhou.
I'm going with Perfect Cherry Blossom. Can't not get goosebumps.

Around the same time as the first Jazz Jackrabbit game, Epic Megagames also released what may well be the greatest fighting game ever on the PC: One Must Fall 2097 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckj-A2eoXuo). Sadly, the developers bit over a bit more than they could chew with the sequel, and it didn't really live up to its predecessor after 7 years in development. The music is still pretty good, though.

That's pretty badass. C64 was before my era, so I've missed out on most of it. More SID recommendations are very welcome.
Not so much a specific music recommendation, but for anyone who doesn't already have it I'd recommend getting the High Voltage Sid Collection (http://hvsc.c64.org/), as it contains a vast amount of SID music. The .sid files can be played with a SID player like for example SIDTool (http://sidtool.demodungeon.com/).

Now, this thread cannot go on without a dose of Touhou.
I'm going with Perfect Cherry Blossom. Can't not get goosebumps.
I've never actually played any of the Touhou games, though I've considered trying to get into it, in part because of the music. Wouldn't really know where to start, though :P

I've actually only played The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil and Perfect Cherry Blossom. The first two Touhou games for windows. Gotta catch up sometime, there are so many of them.
Some are known to be freakishly hard. Google could probably give you a better opinion on what to start with. ~_~

Bastion! Played it just very recently. The audio is very central to this game.
I urge you to get it.

That's gotta be one of the most epic midis I've heard.

Ah, referencing the sound settings in MS-DOS I presume? :D
I remember that from Duke Nukem 3D.

Here's another strategy game... C&C: Tiberian Sun.
Guess Frank Klepacki is more recognized for his heavy rock music from Red Alert 1 & 2 but this is definitely my favourite soundtrack of his.
Such a great atmosphere, very subtle at times.

"People might be more familiar with Klepacki from tracks like the Hell March, but my first encounter with his music was Dune II (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-2iIq8AyQc) and the game that springs to my mind when I hear Frank Klepacki is Kyrandia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEmcbjAqOEs)."

As for "Your sound card works perfectly", it was indeed from the sound settings for WCII. Read in the voice of the footman, no less. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_A1GNx0M9M)

I wasn't really much of a console gamer as a child (well, still not, though I own a PS3 now), but I did play quite a bit of Alex Kidd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L39tsgrW99o) at a cousin's.

A few of my favourite video game tracks are from, true story, the Tarzan Action Game.

That game was so amazingly good back then, at least for me, I was, 7 or 8 I believe.

I recently looked up the music and my god, I was overwhelmed with feelings of nostalgia.

I remember this as one of the great games I've played. Probably wouldn't get the same feeling if I played it today, but I just found out it's available at Good Old Games for $6, so I might give it a shot...

So many badass soundtracks.

In Sweden there is a word called allmänbildning that roughly translates to something like general knowledge.
Anyways, getting a metric fucktonne of allmänbildning atm. Even being a massive soundtrack fan there is great stuff in here that I've missed out on.
So thanks for yer contributions. And keep it going. \(◔ ◡ ◔)/

There is this obscure Polish PC game, Crime Cities (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NthQb6M4CJw), a clone of G-Police, apparently. It had a pretty cool soundtrack.
Also for PC, an equally-if-not-more obscure bullet-hell shoot 'em up: Hellsinker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iy-F0f_gDI). Its OST is quite memorable.

PSO Episode 3 - 'IDOLA' The Strange Fruits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZ6ZW5wv13A)
I love the soundtrack to this game, also this is the best theme in the entire game imo. I just love it. The little piano transition at around 1:27 is my favourite part. It just gets all quiet and then gets really intense.

PSO Episode 3 - Tower of Caelum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-mCypSsSmg)
Another fave from the game.

PSO's music has been a pretty big inspiration when I make my own music (which I haven't done a lot of lately).

Also this is sweet too: Sonic Generations 3DS - Big Arms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzN7kazWq_g&feature=related). My fave boss fight of the entire original series gets an amazing remix.

@TheSpiketopus: I just checked those out and I am totally addicted to IDOLA. Wow what an amazing track!!!

I'm a big fan of all the IDOLA tracks from the series.

Cry, for 'IDOLA' the Holy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAFVrBqUtLw&feature=BFa&list=PLEC8D5AFDCDB857F8)
'IDOLA' Have the Immortal Feather (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3AdN80WKXw)
'IDOLA' Have the Divine Blade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xx2SeunY7S4&feature=relmfu)
'IDOLA' The Fanatic Viper (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coitxrHiDUU&feature=BFa&list=PLEC8D5AFDCDB857F8)

They're just awesome last boss themes for each respective episode. I ommitted one of the IDOLA themes from here because I am not a big fan of it, but its in the playlist. Strange Fruits though in the post above and Immortal Feather are my faves though.

PSO2 - Big Vader Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg6XhwxwS2k)

Thankfully the sequel is getting some half-decent boss themes this time around. When this one picks up I really enjoy it. I'm a huge PSO nut lol.

We don't have anything from The Binding of Isaac in this thread, right? I think some of the music in this game is pretty damn good.
"My Innermost Apocalypse" (http://youtu.be/ikTwG27I1qc) - wrath of God
"Enmity of the Dark Lord" (http://youtu.be/uqrGKlA4XIY) - the demonic Lightbearer

Both are final boss themes. This game has so many final bosses. It went from psychopathic mothers to their hearts to fetuses in the original. Then, in the expansion, it followed up with Satan (whose theme is, of course, "Enmity of the Dark Lord") and then, shit gets really weird and symbolic, with visions of Isaac as a pure and innocent angelic being, getting rescued from hell he was in - or worse yet, as a blue, dead baby locked in a chest, experiencing ascension in the afterlife, with beams of heavenly light and stuff - and you are denied His light. ("My Innermost Apocalypse")

So I've found out about Dust: an Elysian Tail recently. The music was pretty darn good. As was the rest of the game, actually. I was completely blown away by it overall.
Especially this one from the OST was very memorable: Cirromon Caverns (http://youtu.be/Urr9pnp8Lsc) - really set the mood of the place.

...

And the best part is... remember Chris (Megadokyo) and his Hyperduck Soundworks crew?

Well, they did that soundtrack! Mad props to you guys.

--------------------------

Then there is Black Mesa Source. It's not Kelly Bailey, but Joel Nielsen I think did a great job composing music that was not a mere imitation of Bailey's work.

On a Rail 1 (http://youtu.be/n83E5o_3Mlo) - I thought it matched the mood of the cruise through the flooded tunnels pretty well.
It's not the first game's Sirens in the Distance. In fact, I think On a Rail 1 is better.

Super Hexagon, anyone? The game haunts my dreams, but I've spent about 10 hours listening to "Focus" by Chipzel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eN9nboHWSqQ) and it still sounds neat.

It sounds really good when played in reverse, too. (http://youtu.be/EQZbZ0rwtrw) Maybe better than the original.

However, "Courtesy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdevHGHBQh0) brings back more pleasant memories than "Focus", because that's the song of the hard/hardester difficulty, as opposed to the hardest/hardestestest one, meaning I failed less on that one and actually got to listen to pretty long parts of the song in the game, not on YouTube.
