Title: Possible connection for Dark City
Post by: Danton on April 22, 2010, 02:53:35 am
Hi there. So, I was reading King's Dragon by Kate Elliot, and came across an interesting passage.

"For as it is written in the Memoria of Alisa of
Jarrow, 'Knowledge is a treasure-house and the heart is
its strongbox.' Make of your memory a great city, Liath,
and map its streets as if you walked them in your own
body. This is your own, your secret city, and in this city
place all that you wish to remember, giving each thing a
seal or a portrait by which you can recognize it. Each
thing shall be set in its rightful place, in its rightful
order, and by this means you shall be as wealthy as any
king. Knowledge is an incorruptible treasure which can
never lose its brightness.

I noticed a couple correlations with the song, and decided to share :P

... yeah, I didn't get that either. o_O only thing that's referenced in Dark City is Luleå itself, AFAIK

Yeah, they are referencing quite a few places in Luleå;

"I can't see the mountain over me, the Serpent Hollow
The silent fortress underneath"

References Ormberget (Snake mountain), where there is an old, now abandoned, military base.

"And fires hide the black island, the toxic sand"

References Svartön (Black island), where there are a lot of old industries.

etc.

So I'd doubt there are any references to obscure fantasy novels, but please, share your findings.

I'm sorry, there's been a miscommunication. I meant it as a non-intended reference, something to tie into it as a fan, to give it deeper or a more interesting meaning. Sorry for the confusion   ;D

The only thing I see those lines have in common with the song is ... "city".

But I find your quote interesting anyway *g*

Oh Ok. No sweat.
Still, the connection is quite hard to see, please enlighten us as to what you find fits?

"(...)Make of your memory a great city"

if you swap "great" with "dark" and lose the rest of the sentence you get the song's title! That's a connection!

Always thought Dark City had a Final Fantasy 7 reference in it when it says "i walk across the dead train yard". As you do that on FF7 to get to your friends before the bomb goes off. This track is actually mine n my gf's track =)

Not to stirr in a somewhat "dead forum" ( dead trainyard hurr hurr, get it? )
Isn't the text " I walk across the dead trainyard" pointing to that there was a lot of train traffic in Luleå before? And now it's dead, as in fewer train. Just like the rest of the song implies? :) Factories being shut down etc etc. My understanding is that tho :)
