90% of metal bands SUCK and I haven't found a good new one in a long time.
I'm particularly itching for a new Death Metal band (currently in love with Dethklok), but every other metal band's vocals that I've checked out sound more like someone is vomiting rather than gutturally singing.
I know you guys are the right guys to ask.
So please help!

Baroness. Listen to Red Album and Blue Record (my friends like Red Album more, I prefer Blue Record, although the first song on Red Album is probably my favorite of all of theirs). I don't like their LPs very much, but their two full albums are fantastic.
There's also Mastodon if you've never listened to them. I got into them with the new album and then worked my way backwards. I still like the new one most, but I like their older stuff a lot, too.
-
Dethklok made me listen to some old stuff like Cannibal Corpse and such.
'90s dark/death is awesome =)
-
Death metal sucks :-D, (well, early CC isn'ť that bad >:D)
but, try Vader

Note of advice, coming into a metal thread to state "death metal sucks" then suggest a death metal band isn't exactly the most sensible thing.
Anyways, try Scarve.

Especially when nobody knows who you are...
If you're at all interested in doom metal, there are some good bands there, too.
I didn't notice that you wanted death metal, so there's always Opeth if you haven't tried them yet. They're one of my favorites.
-
Vader is more thrash than death these days.
The new Hypocrisy album is out now if you are looking for death. Its more like the older death days of the band and less melodic death or at least that has been my impression so far after five or so listens. If you don't mind a little bit more eccentric death I'd recommend The Project Hate MCMXCIX if you don't already listen to them and Insomnium if you like melodic death.
I can pretty much recommend anything on my lastfm profile regardless of genre: http://www.last.fm/user/Ankle0000/

I still like Kalmah, what's wrong with Kalmah?! D:
and Insomnium!
-
Currently listening to the new Nile album Those Whom The Gods Detest. That's some quality and really heavy Death Mehtuls. \,,/

I second that motion. Nile is pretty awesome.

Vader is really pretty thrash... then there are mayhem covers they did... :) , i suggested Vader because of vocals, since the founder was looking for guttural singing, not just guttural utter shit :-D
i should said most of DM sucks :), it's just too pop, especially the melodic, famous and -core (i know, not death metal technically, but many fans of deathcore thinks theyre metal :-D) ones...
//anyway, someone who's into really extreme music (metal)? :-D

Man, I like everything about Cannibal Corpse except the vocals.
Like I said, it sounds like someone is throwing up.
That's what I like about Dethklok. I realize they are probably more on the "pop death metal" side of things, but Nathan Explosion's (or you know, Brendon Small's) vocals sounds power and guttural, but not like... vomit?
-
Check out Gojira, Despised Icon, Veil Of Maya, Periphery, Born Of Osiris, After The Burial, and ofcourse As Blood Runs Black, August Burns Red, Parkway Drive and all those

Yeah that's totally fair, it was just hard to tell where you were coming from.
I mean, I disagree on the Death Metal thing, but whatever, not important.
-
Gojira and Scarve have been said...
Then, try Hacride, Klone (not realy death, more like... give it a try, you'll see). Also Mistaken Element, Psykup, Sybreed...
Black Bomb A... but it's not death at all.
Yes, all are French bands (except Sybreed). So what ? ;D

Try out Wintersun, one of the best bands i've ever heard, originally a solo project by Jari Mäenpää from Ensiferum, Kai Hahto from Rotten sound on the drums.
The guy himself described the music as Extreme Majestic Technical Epic Melodic Metal. But it's really melodic death metal to my ears ( though those could be used as adjectives to describe the music :P )
-
Korru, what the hell were you thinking?
@ Jack: Awesome 8).

New Kalmah album approaching fast! (March 3rd for Europe...March 2ND for Canadians biotch!)
And I didnt even notice Insomnium came out with an album after Above the Weeping World!
-
man it´s long ago since I was on the forum hehe
I recommend to listen to Sybreed :) awesome band
the new Disarmonia Mundi album is also nice
I´m waiting for the debut albums of TesseracT, Periphery and Solution .45!!!

Same here ;)

some of these may have been mentioned before, but consider it backing to the suggestions. i'll trust you know how to obtain.
Kalmah: as have been raved about. bad-assery abounds.
Insomnium: i'd recommend all of their stuff. fantastic instrumentals, and very poetic lyrics. some of the best out there.
Mors Principium Est: it really doesn't get much more metal than this.
Solstafir: Masterpiece of Bitterness isn't very great, but Kold is fan-fucking-tastic. one of my favorite metal albums.
Amon Amarth: rooted heavily in norse mythology. straight up music for a man's man.
Veneficium: De Occulta Philosophia is one of the most beautiful black metal albums i've ever heard. killer drums and almost violin-like guitar parts.
Turmion Kätilöt: excellent production, very high energy and in your face sound. not the best musicians out there, but their sound is second to none. the finns on here should know exactly what i'm talking about. best headbanging on the planet.
2TimesTerror: the MC from TK's solo project. heavier on the synth and a little more experimental, but just as bad ass.
Sybreed: kinda hit or miss for me, but when they're good they're fucking good. two words: Doomsday Party.
Mortiis: The Grudge is a great album. everything prior is industrial, and weird ambient experimental folk craziness. great vocalist.
Fear of Domination: more good 'ol melo-death with a touch of synth.
Finntroll: i should hope you know of these guys. pirate metal in the most literal sense.
Moonsorrow: viking metal in the most literal sense.
Kiuas: a bit on the pagan side with power metal overtones, but minus the faggotry of power metal vocals.
Gamma Ray: power metal with the faggotry of power metal vocals. i can overlook that on the account of being able to shred like mad men: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvbguX1xxPs&feature=related
Crionics: i can't say i really like a lot of their songs, but Black Warriors off of Neuthrone is cool as fuck.
that should do for starters. if you want more let me know. i should also note: i listen to many many genres (and metal isn't my favorite *shock*), so if you're looking to mix it up a bit i could help there as well.
-
Check out some Pagan's Mind people =)
-
I forgot to mention Arch Enemy I like them ::)
Edit: New Solution .45 song is up http://www.myspace.com/solution45

Due to the fact that their debut album isn´t released yet. I´m quite sure that they will become famous (in the dimension a melodic death metal band has the possibility to become famous ;) not Lady Gaga famous)
-
I was being sarcastic. Every metal fan knows Arch Enemy.

I still think everyone in here should listen to Baroness, damnit.
-
New Demon Hunter album is out check out the songs Collapsing and Just Breathe

Tired of metal repetitivity ? Of all those "sound like another" guitar riffs ?
Try MOPA (My Own Private Alaska), french band from Toulouse, who recorded his first album with Ross Robinson.
http://www.myspace.com/myownprivatealaska
The (complete) first EP : http://www.deezer.com/fr/#music/my-own-private-alaska/m-o-p-a-49235
Things have changed between the EP and the album. In a very good way. More expressive singing/yelling, add of different orchestrations and a far far better production (Robinson inside).
Oh, I forgot to add there are no guitars there. Only drums, vocals... and piano.
-
I heard mygrain are working on their third studio album. I liked the two albums so far so I think it´s gonna be a good album too.
-
I got their other two albums, too, but I don't think they're what you can listen to when you're frustrated by metal. They sound like everyone else.

Their latest Chasing Shadows (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmmS7qEH32U) will clear any cobwebs from the inside of your skull. Nice guitar solo from 2:25, which transfers into what sounds like Jeroen Tell-esque SID at 3:01. (I just wish ;))
-
I always wondered why nobody makes power metal (you know nice solos keyboards etc) but with normal vocals not the I-have-no-balls-I-sing-so-high-that-I-can-reach-space-vocals.
-
Try Sabaton then - think they are in the power metal genre ;)
-
If you want some death metal, try the older In Flames, like from Lunar Strain to Clayman, and if you want melodic death metal, try the newer In Flames, like from Soundtrack to your Escape to Sense of Purpose.
-
I just found out about Orphaned Land (http://www.myspace.com/orphanedmyspace).
I haven't tried out their music yet but they do have a pretty unique sound and "Sapari" sounds pretty cool IMHO.
-
Listen to the album Mabool, it's a masterpiece. I also read that their last album is kickass (and produced by Steven Wilson).
-
Periphery's self titled album comes out the 20th!

Hrmm they are playing with Katatonia and Swallow the Sun in September here. I need to go see that.

New Equilibrium album "Rekreatur" is out.
I like it ;D don't know yet if it wins over "Sagas", but it's great.

Sagas > Rekreatur > Turis Fratyr for me so far. I miss Helge, but that's just me since the album's awesome anyway. :D
-
Funny I just commented on that on facebook: "Folk metuhl with a ginger guitarist who did awesome solos on Spiritual's Pulse? Yes, please."
-

Yeah, same for me, but I remember that when Sagas came out it needed some time to sink in, so I'll see what happens with this one.
Edit: Probably not the Helge part. I think the new singer is just as awesome as Helge.
@Einkoro: o rly?
