Title: Google Wave
Post by: Deep on October 26, 2009, 01:43:11 pm
Well, uhh. I have no Technology Discussion section any more, so this can go here for now I guess.

http://wave.google.com/

Has anyone tried it? What do you think? Is it a facebook killer or just another fad? Does anyone have any invites?

ta

So erm, Google Wave is media now.

The whole concept kind of confuses me. It's like they're trying to put everything into one site.

MY MIND CAN'T HANDLE THIS KIND OF CHANGE.

I get the concept, i really do. But i don't think generalization is the way to go, if they continue this road we're going to end up with a google computer, running google applications, and google games, calling eachother with google phones, eating google hamburgers

I like to think of Google of a nice kind of evil though. The kind of evil that makes things more organised and cleaner.

uh, and what tells you that Google doesn't want that?

Google is already taking over the internet bit by bit.

they're our search engine, our video-watching (youtube), RSS Aggregator, directions, map and satellite views, our email and even you can even shop using google check out.

it won't be long before the word internet and google are synonymous.

I signed up for a damn beta invitation the second they released that press release.. It may be because they're only BETA testing in America or something, but it's still worth a try.

Doubt it, I only have access to the sandbox. Still on the hunt for a regular invitation.

I'm in! Anyone that wants an invite, PM me your email. I have 6 invites left, so don't take too long.

Got invites as well. PM if you want them.

Basically it's what EtherPad's done for a long time but supporting more protocols. Not very impressive from a technological perspective.

Just got it a few days ago (already gave away all my invites).

I don't feel that it's useless.

It allows for extremely complex conversations to take place.

You can talk about the first topic, break off into sub-topics, create new main topics, etc.

It gets really neat when you have 4-5 people in a wave all discussing various topics.

I find it pointless in the way that I already have forums/facebook/twitter/msn/whatever and google wave doesn't do anything amazing enough to make me want ANOTHER way to talk to friends online.

After using it for a while, I have realized that the thing with Wave isn't that it isn't a fantastic idea (because it is) but that they marketed it to the wrong people. Considering the amount of ways to communicate with your friends out there, we hardly need another one.
What it really is good for, is project planning and distributed work. It's perfect for managing teams and keeping track of the work of each individual member.
