Title: Overworld album reviews
Post by: mumppis on January 09, 2008, 09:33:18 pm
Well I'm gonna start and do the first one.

Overworld as an album is the best machinae has done ever it has something to everything. really awesome guitar solos and riffs, evil bass lines and awesome drums and of course the sid supports the songs perfectly. Also there is some points I dont want to spoil you so I´ll keep some of the stuff in dark. So lets get started

1. Overworld
The title song for the album has very nasty guitar riffs and nice sid line to support the elements it hard to compare it to any old machinae song because its different but if i would have to say something i would say ttlg and rise mixed together in some weird blender using way to create something awesome.

2. Need for Steve
Yes the Steve saga continues and the song is one of the best ones in the album. The song has one nasty cool bass line and everything else in this song is just awesome it aint a heavy song but its perfect. If I have to compare this to songs also I would say old steve songs has something same but this one is the best steve song so far.

3. Edge and Pearl
This song hits you like a damn express train. It gives you the adreline rush you just want to go crazy when you hear it. the guitars are MEAN the song is MEAN MEAN MEAN MEAN. compare to old machinae songs i would have to say the evilness comes from empire and then the rest comes from the creative minds of robert and jonne.

4. Radio Future
My personal favorites. Machinae goes POP! ;) Okay a joke but this song is something different and it is just awesome it somehow brings david bowie in my mind somehow but in a good way. It is still a metal song but i has nice pop elements in it and it just takes you away with you and before you notice you are singing the chorus. have to compare this song i cant say it has something that tempus fugit and throttle and mask had

5. Skin
This song will make you jaw drop on the floor and eyes pop out from your head and you gonna yell WOW and i wont say why you have to listen it yourself. This song is just something awesome and it made me cry when i heard it first time because it shows how much the band has evolved in the years. You cant even compare this to any old machinae song. Also my personal favorites

6. Truth Of Tomorrow.
I had hard to adjust this track after the hard songs at the starts but it is a strong track and very good one. i would compare this song to   tempus fugit and throttle and mask + a martini shaker :D

7. Dark City
Again something awesome came out from the dark north everything is awesome guitars, singing, bass, drums, etc... This song will make you sing so loud that you dont even notice it. Hard to even say anything about it cos then i would spoil you guys and girls. Also I cant compare this song to the old machinae songs

8. Conveyer
Great song also had problems to start to adjust to the song but then when i got into it the song took me away and i started to love it.

9. Gimme more
Do I have to say anything about this one anymore? great cover song.

10. Violator
This song will violate your mind with a hard tempo metal song. has evil guitars :D

11. Sid Icarus
Remake of the flight of the japanese car ;) Very good song with very good lyrics i wont say anythng about the structure because then I would take the fun out from you guys.

12. Stand
Again something amazing awesome way to end the album with and song that is something out of this world again. You have to hear it you cant say how it sounds because its again something new.

In overall the guys made an album that is very fresh and different. They just created a masterpiece if would say points on a scale 1-10 i would say 9.5/10.

In a side note damn writing this was hard and prolly you ppl wanna kill me even more after this.  :-X

What I like with mumppis, since he said he had Overworld, is the new vision I have of his sig.
Looking at his face smiling with this "I've already heard Overworld, and not you, ah ah ah" in his smile... it changed my life.

(Quote from the overworld info thread, page 17)
We were originally working on 15 songs for the album. We had the idea for them, and we began recording them.

Sadly, two of them we didn't even finish because we realized they weren't very good. By excluding them, we get a better album all the way through. I know some of you want MOAR MOAR MOAR but trust me, this decision saves you from something you really did not need (and that is less-than-good masu songs).

Now, obviously it was suggested that we DO finish them, and make them site releases, but I kind of got sick of them because we worked so hard and those song had the odacity to suck after all that work. :) So I'd rather do something completely new for the site, but we'll see whenever that happens.

Now, with the 13 songs that remain, I feel that we have an uber album coming. Atm it looks like 55-56 minutes of music, the 13 songs we have. Not bad at all, imo.

I've started doing some sort of songname list (including 50-60% of the songs) with short descriptions of the lyrics/theme and what previous machinae song(s) they remind me of. I'll put that up here in November or so, to give you an idea of what it might sound like.

I'm still waiting for it...
But mummpis review is good as well. The only negative thing: He says: Every song is amazing! But thats a fact, that we already know. There aren't bad Machinae songs on this Planet (imo)!

From Wikipedia : "Lori Linstruth is a virtuosa guitarist. She currently resides in Kronoberg, Sweden."
Yes, she is awsome.

And mummpis; schhhhh!

Is the band (or the label) sending copies to magazines or internet sites that write reviews about music? The really should! If they do and are confident in having positive reviews that could enlarge the MaSu scene.

Promos are being sent to different medias as we speak. The video will be released on YouTube and such at the begining of the week. Hopefully we also can release some high resolution downloadable video through our website in a few days.  :)

I hope the webzine I work with (which get promos from Spinefarm, so...) will get it. :P

Btw, awesome news about the video. =)

You know, I don't mind if people get to have a behind the scene's peek into the new album.
But as everyone else says, give us a taster will ya?

What happened to the days where we were guaranteed snippits and clips of songs.
Hell, what kind of a frenzy did the Redeemer trailer cause?!
People started getting into euphoria and breaking tables just from hearing 5 seconds of "17".

I mean I would have taken a trailer again, no problem.
What other bands make trailers?

Oh well, you can't win the all.

I can't be bothered to translate the whole thing (lots of fairly irrelevant material in there), but I'll translate the most important part (note that I translate quite freely, because ultra direct translation sucks):

[translation]
In the video, a teenage girl runs through the hallways of a hospital, and scenes with Machinae Supremacy and unpleasant pictures of old people, sometimes with twisted faces, are shown in a series of fast clips.
[end translation]

I think it sounds like a cool vid.

Is the band (or the label) sending copies to magazines or internet sites that write reviews about music? The really should! If they do and are confident in having positive reviews that could enlarge the MaSu scene.

label handles that always so dont worry about it :)

Ok, great!

I recently spotted Rise on KINK! Aardschok Radio so maybe one of the Overworld songs will hit KINK! too. Would be cool. Two of my friends asked me:
''Hey Willem, Machinae Supremacy, isn't that one of the bands you're always talking about?''

Anyway, no one gave me sugar except myself because I'm on my third cup of coffee with whipped cream on top and god it's so good. And now I'm listening to Daft Punk and so that's not helping.

I don't get why people keep saying it's low quality. The version I got is 80 mb and it sounds perfect. I did see another one that was 60 mb though but luckily I didn't get that (if it was even real). And people it's not that hard to find. If you can't use a search function then don't bother asking where to get it.

Yeah, I agree.. Well, it's not very high, it's a variable speed UP TO 256kb/s, which means that it floats around 256kb/s, only below that though, which means that it tops 256kb/s. That's kinda mediocre IMHO. A 320kb rip is what I will have on my computer when I have the CD.

Wow, too much techno babble. :D

well for me the quality sounded normal.. but maybe its because i don't have any high quality speakers and i am used to the regular shitty-headphone quality... BTW the 60MB rip is 192kbps and it probably is real, as IND ripped Redeemer too back then.. and the 80MB rip is from FNT, its vbr and its teh real scene stuff (though you won't probably find the release as it came from the scene)

I listen to most of my music walking to/from college anyway, the quality of the (80mb version) rip made no difference to me when there's traffic and wind in the background. I'll hopefully be able to get a lossless once we get the CD, anyway =D

More comments:
"Conveyer" is one of my favorite songs now. The riffs kick ass and that SID solo was damn tasty.
"Truth of Tomorrow" has some of the best SID lines I've heard from you guys yet.
"Violator" had both awesome riffs and awesome SID, and the lyrics are awesome as well.
"Dark City" was damn epic. End of story.
"Edge and Pearl" was pretty good. Not what I expected though >_>
"Need for Steve" was another favorite of mine.

I haven't heard "Stand" yet, due to the .rar I downloaded having an issue with unzipping the track.
Oh, and don't be mad at me for getting the leak, I had preordered the damn thing 3 days before I even found out about the leak :p

it is jsut some parts in few songs that are fcked up in the rip its high quality but lousy rip.

I've got Redeemer ripped in .flac format. Makes the album around 500 MB, but it's worth it. I'll be doing the same for Overworld once it gets to me.

well for me the quality sounded normal.. but maybe its because i don't have any high quality speakers and i am used to the regular shitty-headphone quality... BTW the 60MB rip is 192kbps and it probably is real, as IND ripped Redeemer too back then.. and the 80MB rip is from FNT, its vbr and its teh real scene stuff (though you won't probably find the release as it came from the scene)

I'm the same. It doesn't sound too bad to me because I don't have excellent headphones or audio card. *shrug* It'll do.

OK, here is my review:

1. Overworld - it's third in my top 3 of this album. A SID intro, kicks in nicely, has the power. But it loses it around 0:38. Then when Rob jumps in, it regains it. Then it loses it once again in the chorus part. Then back again with the main riff. Then boring for few seconds. Then back again. Good track, but it's fcking "unstable".

2. Need for Steve - Guitar + SID intro, sounds good. Rob's singing is really great on this one. The track has some great atmosphere.

3. Edge and Pearl - synth(?) intro, pretty atmospheric. I don't like the verses, but the chorus is pretty nice here.

4. Radio Future - listened to it like 10 times and I'm already fed up of the SID/synth intro. But the rest is OK, nothing special though.

5. Skin - love Rob's vocal here, it's the best track on the album. Duh, at least one upbeat here. Until around 2:00, when it gains some powuh, but loses all the delicate touch it had before.

6. Truth of Tomorrow - pretty mediocre track, it reminds me of some DXM tracks, though I found it a bit boring.

7. Dark City - my favourite track. Great intro and main riff. It's epic as hell, contains the right amount of slowness and quickness. It's just nearly perfect. Awesome lyrics, awesome atmosphere.

8. Conveyer - nice. It's got some kinda "Empire" meets "I Know the Reaper" feel.

9. Gimme More (SID) - a good track, but it disrupts the metalness of this album. It just doesn't fit. Whole album is a collection of epic tracks, while this one is a pop metal thingy. Though I love the solo at 2:13.

10. Violator - duuuuuuuuuh, anooother SID intro... how much can I take? Nevertheless, the proper song kicks in with great amount of energy and it maintains it just to the end.

11. SID Icarus - basically it's the same as Flight of the Toyota, but with addition of Rob singing, which doesn't fit in for me, as I'm used to the original song from J'n'G OST. And it has a SID intro.

12. Stand - second in my top 3 of Overworld. Hard to describe my feelings about this track, but I love the main riff and the SID Intro (duuuuh, another one!).

Overall:
This album feels more like DXM than Redeemer. First of all, I must admin that lyrics are great, great and once again - great. It's got some punky feeling, because most of the tracks have a really similar tempo. I don't like the overall mastering, guitars seem to be too dry, bass seems to have too much bass and to little treble, drums have too little bass and too much treble, vocals seem to be a bit dull and hide behind all of above mentioned. I had to use equalizers to make it sound good, which I didn't do on Redeemer. Still, it may be a problem of advance internet rip. I can change my mind when I obtain the retail, original CD. My review can be a bit harsh, but I really like the fact, that Overworld is completely different than Redeemer and I still think you guys are talented, yet evolving. The Poe-Dezo exchange didn't even leave a mark. If I had to give Overworld a rating, it would be 8-/10. Very good, but could be better.

Checked it out, and you're right. I'd attribute it to the rip, though, since the songs i got from robz doesn't sound like this. Sounds ok during synth/sid-parts, but with guitars/bass/vocals, it becomes too messy. But as I said, this isn't a problem with the copy I have.

I caved. :(

Once I had preordered and ordered some merch I couldn't take it. My room mate also found out and had already freaked out and listened.

Stone me if you'd like, I did pay my $110ish USD for two shirts and a CD and shipping to another dimension :)

This is what I have to say about the album:
Blown. Away.

DXM was excellent, Redeemer was defined, this album is a testiment to the maturity and evolution of Machinae as musicians. It is grown up and it's amazing. I LOVE even the older work, Earthbound, Hero... etc. Amazing songs. But MaSu has not failed to amaze me.

When the final track, Stand, began playing I could feel the blood rush to my face. A feeling I cannot attribute to any particular reason, but I wanted to grab someone and say "OH MY GOD LISTEN TO THIS".

Beautiful exit to the album, imo. Every song is strong, I have listened on repeat since yesterday and have not grown tired of any of them. I cannot skip a single track on this album, they're awesome. I love them all. The track that gets a little extra attention is Need for Steve, I'm not sure why - It's just giggity. My current favorites are Stand, Skin, and Need for Steve in no particular order (thats really hard for me to say though, because like I said. They are all amazing and I love the entire album).

Thank you guys, another freakin' amazing piece of musical entertainment. Can't wait for the hardcopy and the video.

I'm not giving seperate reviews for every song because almost everything I got to say applies to all the songs.

First off, I think Overworld is the least (less good than the rest, w/e I spell it) album MaSu has produced so far. I find most of the songs rather dry. The SID is back but doesn't really contribute much to the songs. It is there, and it's good, fun to hear, but without it some of the songs would be as great as with SID. I love DXM because the SID contributes a lot to the songs, I love RU because it is massively epic. OV doesn't do any. The SID on Need for Steve is great because it works towards the guitar solos following (2:20). This is good, really like it. But... what if the SID had been there WITH the solos, for an awesome fast and powerful SID/metal combi? I also think MaSu didn't pull of everything they could've (viewing the previous CDs). With a cover (Gimme More) and a 'let's add lyrics' (SID Icarus/Flight of the Toyota) their only remain 10 songs. This means the NEW material lasts only 45 minutes. While the NEW material on DXM lasts over one hour.
Good things about OV are the lyrics. Not just the text itself, but the way it's applied to the music and Robert's voice. It's really great! It's different from DXM and RE/RU, had to grow accustomed to it, but now I LUUUUV it. Really great! Songs got a lot of power but a less epic touch to 'm. It made the music more power metal and more raw, with the solos following some of the power parts it makes up for a great combination!

This CD shows you guys still know the deal and try a lot out. DXM - SID, RE/RE - Epic and now OV - Raw/Power. That's what I think.

If I had to rate it would be 7,5/10.

That's basically what I stated earlier in the other thread. Glad to think that I think in the same way. :)

Anyway, before calling the album dry/messed up, please wait until we have the original CD, because the rips aren't mixed well unfortunately, like confirmed by Gaijin and Mumppis. ;)

it is jsut some parts in few songs that are fcked up in the rip its high quality but lousy rip.

I've got Redeemer ripped in .flac format. Makes the album around 500 MB, but it's worth it. I'll be doing the same for Overworld once it gets to me.

If you rip it in a lossless coded (*cough*FLAC*cough*), then it's lossless. :)

Uh yes, I know that. I was saying that if you download a .flac version, you're never 100% certain that someone didn't just re-encode a 160 kbps mp3 to flac. So buying the CD solves that issue. I have a really good MP3 player and earbuds and I can easily tell that the rip currently available has issues. For example, 0:41 in Skin sounds... weird...

i am now in a position to contribute to this thread with the sorts of contribution for which it was created.

i was actually thrown a little off-guard with this album. I see what people mean by its being dry or more metally. But what nobody that i can see has mentioned is a curious industrial hue that was never there before. I think it's a combination of the simultaneous expanding and backgrounding of the synth and the change in rob's singing, which has been mentioned. I would describe it not so much as "showing less range" as "more confident." Not that this is purely positive; it sounds as though he's been truly convinced at last of the coolitude of his style of singing and as a result is a little more cocky; alternately, this might just be overproduction in post.

that said, however, i have been known to fall for overproduction, and it's certainly still the trademark sound.

I'm not going to do a song-by-song thing (and i've only listened through 1.5 times so far), but overall i was most pleased with the result. The energy is great, though in some cases the downfall; i didn't feel like there were enough times it slowed down. And one of the places where it definitely did (Skin) felt almost forced, like they couldn't wait to get to the cool part (the explosive fast part), which i agree was more fun, but a guy needs a break over the course of an album, and something rich enough to get involved in (even dark city doesn't take the time to smell the roses, but it's the closest they come). By the end of the album, in fact, i found myself thinking that it was as though the whole thing was an excitable race to the end, plenty of fun, but you're left at the end with a sorta "oh... what happened?" feeling.

as i say i haven't even listened through twice fully, and I have to say that i love industrial/groove, so to the extent that alterations led the sound in that direction, i'm happy. In fact, i'm overall quite happy, and I still would be hard-pressed to name another band with a sound significantly like this. But it doesn't feel like quite the same band. I can appreciate an evolution in sound and i had no expectations going in, so coming out it is a great album by someone i'd like to hear more of, but i'd also like to hear more of the band that wrote hubnester inferno and the wired. alack, they might have dissipated into the mist...

i'd like to give a special shout-out to gimme more, which actually i think reminds me most of the irreverent machinae supremacy of days of yore. I'd also like to give special props to the increased solos, which were greatly understated in redeemer.

I wouldn't exactly call it industrial and/or groove, because I can't seem to find these things in the songs, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. :)

That's only your personal opinion, man... :) Personally I love it when an album is fast from the beginning to the end without a single slow/gay song to break the intensity of the whole thing. Albums like Reign in Blood or Silent Night Fever are fast ones but you couldn't want any slow part in them, because what makes them special is the uncompromising aspect :P

i didn't feel like there were enough times it slowed down. And one of the places where it definitely did (Skin) felt almost forced, like they couldn't wait to get to the cool part (the explosive fast part), which i agree was more fun, but a guy needs a break over the course of an album.

But there are slow songs in this album? <_<''

Skin is slow in the start for example. :D

I...uh...accidentally downloaded the leaked rip. It's not my fault that I wanted to listen to Sid Icarus.

But damn, I like it. Top songs for me are the aforementioned Sid Icarus (how they were going to put vocals to it worried me, and at first I thought it was just okay. It's grown on me though, I still freaking love the sid line in it) and Radio Future, I love Radio Future it's almost a Flag Carrier-like ballad, but with a bit more energy. Dark City is also badass.

Overworld is great, as all the opening tracks are, but Elite still holds my heart...'did you doubt us for what came before, were you not a believer, well now all your doubts are no more for this is REDEEMER¬!"£$%&*()'

Need For Steve sounds quite punky in some ways and I like it too, quite a bouncy song in some ways <_>

SKIN, this is a great song, though I do find the opening to go on for a bit long, once it gets going it seriously rocks out.

And Violator, it sounds like Dradnought had hot raunchy sex with Seventeen or something and produced a loud, terrifying child (with a punchy little sid line in there too). Nice.

As for songs I'm not keen on...

Edge and Pearl is okay in and of itself, but it doesn't sound as distinctively MaSu as some of the other songs.

And Stand I don't like all that much (I think). Maybe it's just the line 'time's up you corporate whores' smacks of blarghjk. Don't mind the song though, it's quite good.

And that's all I can be bothered with. It's different to the other two, that's for sure, but the other two weren't similar albums either. I eagerly await my official purchase to arrive :D

(Well, actually, that's not entirely true. I often equated Fury with Return To Snake Mountain, Ninja with Ronin, Rise with Super Steve, Insidious with Elite...)

EDIT: What's good to know is that the songs are still often delicious crunchy rock, I guess the production in some of them just...smoothens the sound of the guitars a bit.

That's only your personal opinion, man... :)

uhm.... yeah. man. and what follows is only your personal opinion. that's the point of this thread...

I wouldn't exactly call it industrial and/or groove, because I can't seem to find these things in the songs, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. :)

thanks for your permission. I know it isn't even close to there yet, but i felt like it was more in that direction; the guitars a little more chugga chugga at times, the background synth with a more "cyber" flare, and the vocals more energized and utilitarian.

I've listened through the leak fully once, and listened through most of it two other times. My first impression is that the most stand-out songs are in the first half. Obviously I'm going to be listening a lot more (I felt somewhat the same about Redeemer, but now when I listen every song feels highly individual), but I too agree that a slower song in the middle might have been nice, because it may have remedied this. Going at a fast pace through the entire album can cause a listener to get somewhat lost. Overall, though, I'm pleased, and I can't wait to listen to this on repeat through the new headphones I'm getting. :) It definitely has a different "feel" than the other albums, and this is always welcome to me.

My three favorite songs are the first three on the album, something which rarely happens. Overworld reminds me of old Machinae in the best ways, Need for Steve has some of the coolest bass I've ever heard, and Edge and Pearl... oh man, I just can't describe it. I think Edge and Pearl is the best song on the album, the jewel at the peak of a shining crown. The mixing is just perfect. It's got the right amount of SID, and the guitars are just so heavy and awesome it makes me giddy. I love it. This band only ever gives me more reasons to follow them wherever their creativity drives them.

I think I'll save my thoughts on the rest of the songs for when the CD arrives, as well as any that change about these. I want to wait until I have the band's impression of how the CD should sound before I make any more judgements.

Also:

slow/gay song

No.

Don't wanna write a review, but I do wanna say that on my first listen I was skeptical until Dark City came on. That song fscking nailed me. I was thrown and I loved the second half of the album. After that (on 3 more listens at least) the first 3 grew on me very quickly but 4 & 5 I'm still having a hard time with.

For crying out loud, Xarion would you just quite fucking bitching? Ok we get the point that some people hate the album and/or the video. Ok, you've made that clear. Now go get back in your kennels, all of you. You've got nothing else constructive to post except "waaah needs moar sid".

As Gaz has pointed out, every single fucking album that gets released someone's disappointed,. or let down, or wants to have a whinge about the Sid. I mean what songs are you listening to? I can hear Sid? In all that bullshit you've been spreading everywhere lodged inside your ear canals?

There's nothing -wrong- with being critical and saying "Well this bit here doesn't sound quite right because ________ (enter phrase that doesn't involve the words "needs", "more" and "sid")", however to sit there and say "Well this album sucks because it's nothing like the last one and it's crap and it's missing everything and theres not enough sid".... you get my point. Nothing you're saying is helpful to the band. In fact you've managed to get Gaz on edge, who happens to be the most easy going guy I know. Do you feel proud?

They work hard on their music. To develop it, and help it grow. They work hard on their videos with what little budget they have. They do it to get their foot in the retail door, and they've succeeded and will continue to succeed, with or without you. If you hate Machinae Supremacy's perceived "new" sound, then why all means leave. You wouldn't be the first who have, and you will probably not be missed.

If I so much as sniff the phrase "Need's more SID" in any context other than humour, I will charge right back here with another lecture.

Chill the fuck out.

Needs More Orchestral!

But yeah, other then that little nit pick, personally I think it is a great album! I can hardly wait for my preorder to come! Normally for MaSu I wouldn't be listening to it until I have it in hand but I won't be seeing my girl for '6 half a months' and NEED some cheer... now.

Anyway I think Overworld is great and is a much easier listen then Redeemer was in either edition as Redeemer on a whole is still growing on me. I wouldn't say Overworld tops DXM but it feel's more like a matured follow up to DXM with plenty of good Redeemer influences cleaned up to stay within DXMs cleaner sound. If that makes any sense. The Web releases will always hold the most special place for me but DXM is the Album for which I will compare all others. I already have great hopes for the next album since my hopes for this album have been quite satisfied. Sure they can always use more SiD but this album is finely balanced for a clean rock and SiD sound that I don't think I'd change much even if I could...

I hope they keep changing and sounding fresh and that for the NEXT album they keep one more item in mind... Needs More Orchestral. :D hehe

Just my thoughts,
Andrew

Hmm...can't really tell my opinion just yet. But first impression was... a little disappointment  :-X and no, not because of amount of SiD or something like that. IMO there simply wasn't any really memorable songs (like I Know the Reaper, TTLG, Elite, Reanimator, Oki Kuma, Rogue World Asylum, whole DXM etc...) that really hit you from the very beginning.

So far rockin' to Edge and Pearl. Skin sounds awesomely epic until the fast part hits in (OK, I got it off my chest now)

BUT I do like the way Rob has grown as a vocalist  :)

Well, I loved the album from the very start =] (when the first chorus in Overworld kicked in, wow, that was insane). It is an evolution of your sound that doesn't compromise the style of the band! One thing that I noticed, for example, is that the songs have more "breaks" and turnarounds that the old songs didn't have. Take Earthbound as an example: it's that basic "slow intro" -> "fast intro/chorus" and "verse" riffs, while songs like Stand, Edge and Pearl, Need for Steve (my favorite song of the album) and of course Skin change dramatically during the minutes they last, with different riffs, sid parts, singing styles and even the tempo itself.

I don't think it needs "moar SID" as someone may have said. They do appear frequently, and now they also appear in unexpected moments, becoming the "star" of some songs. Loved the shakuhachi (or whatever synth that is) on Skin and.. eh... well, the album is well-paced, fast but with slow parts on some songs.

I prefer DXM myself, but then that's for personal reasons (this album has played an important role in my life, hence why I love MS so much ;] ). Overworld is a brilliant album that will be playing in my cd player for a long time. The band has evolved, everythings getting better and the legion of fans is increasing everyday. Can't wait to put my hands on the CD itself! *waits by the mailbox*

(edit) oh, just some extra notes about the songs:

Overworld: It's a mix of Insidious and Elite. The result is, of course, excellent!
Need for Steve: Best song of the album, energetic, fast-paced, great solos and... yeah, sid.
Edge and Pearl: This song's got a nice "beat", it's fun to dance to it's chorus and sing along!
Radio Future: I didn't like the song, i don't know, it's too dark in my opinion. But when the chorus gets stuck in my head for 2 days, that's a sign that there's osmething interesting about this song ;]
Skin: As I said above, the sid/shakuhachi sounds great. I just wished there could be more slow parts, but it's one of my favorites!
Truth of Tomorrow: Great song, it sounds very very Machinae, and the lyrics remind me of that "videogame-cyberpunk-hero" style some people including me like in some MS songs!
Dark City: My favorite part is the guitar solo. the song develops very well, very catchy.
Covnveyer: the beggining reminds me of Rise. Good song, great SID!
Gimme More: a new insight on Britney's song. Reminds me of a band that made a rock version of smooth criminal (check it out if on youtube, it's great)
Violator: Reminds me of "Follower". A SIDfest :D very fast-paced. nice.
SID Icarus: I need to pay attention to the lyrics to ellaborate more on this version. I like Toyotas, btw =]
Stand: Nice way to close the album. It's an epic song, very balanced. I think it could have better vocals, tho. I mean, more agressivity when singing. Other than that. the ".told" part is awesome!

(sorry for the long post, hope it helps the band in knowing what their fans think of their music, tho =])

I'm enjoying the album. Conveyer really hits home and makes me think about EA Games (particularly what they did to my beloved C&C, violated dreams) and the gaming industry in general as of late. My favourite song would probably be Skin because of that asian flute thingy. What is it called anyway?

The only thing negative I can say is Gimmie More (SID) really hurts the flow of the album for me; I think it would have been better as the last track or as a download with something else taking its place on the album. I'm also a bit sad that there is no instrumentals again and that Erica doesn't sing more than a short line on Stand.

So in summary, gimmie more:

Hey, i'm sorry but i have to reply to this post.

What I said there is that I like DXM better than Overworld, but that it's not a rule, i'm not saying that dxm is better because of the songs themselves, but rather i like it more because of my personal life. in other words, in an unbiased review i'd say that overworld is the best machinae album so far (even if they're all great albums). now if you really want to know, dxm helped me getting over a sad moment in my life with it's bright lyrics and sound.

Songs that I love the most on the album [in no order];

Edge&Pearl
Stand
Dark City
Need For Steve
Violator
Gimme More [Sid]

Songs that I like [in no order];
Overworld
Radio Future

The rest of the songs are yet to grow on me. Depending on how I feel, Skin is OK. Truth Of Tomorrow, I just tend to skip.

Sid Icarus is kinda annoying [Sorry guys]. Maybe it's just that I'm so used to FOTT.

Same with Conveyer. The intro is hardcore, but I can't get into the rest of the song.

Lyrics on the whole album are epic.

My favourite song would probably be Skin because of that asian flute thingy. What is it called anyway?

If it's the same as in Oki Kumas Adventure, I guess it's shakuhachi.

I wants one. If Picard can make time to learn to play a flute while captaining a starship, I can to!

Ditto. I'm seriously consider buying one and learning to play as soon as I have the money to spare for it (they b rather expensive, tho :P)

Thank you, and from the hype i have seen, i look forward to my copy coming :) :) :)

Nice order MDX... don't expect the sid station though.  ;) And I guess the shipping on the keyboards would cost an awful lot.  :)

Hmph! Order cancelled!  >:D Yes well im plentiful in keyboards, but thank you for the kind thought Gordon. Just list the things i should get to easily achieve a great and easily modifiable SID sound, and all will be well. Failing that. The album should help me in my journey to SIDopia.

am I the only one who thinks Sid icaurs, although not strong, was well put together with lyrics? I mean is hard to put lyrics to a song that was designed as an instrumental, but rob did a good job with the lyrics there

it maybe not as strong as the rest of the album but it isnt a huge letdown

Hmm...can't really tell my opinion just yet. But first impression was... a little disappointment  :-X and no, not because of amount of SiD or something like that. IMO there simply wasn't any really memorable songs (like I Know the Reaper, TTLG, Elite, Reanimator, Oki Kuma, Rogue World Asylum, whole DXM etc...) that really hit you from the very beginning.

So far rockin' to Edge and Pearl. Skin sounds awesomely epic until the fast part hits in (OK, I got it off my chest now)

BUT I do like the way Rob has grown as a vocalist  :)

hmm, no songs at the star that arnt memorable? sorry I would have to isagree. 1st song I heard was truth of tomorrow, it actully hit me an made me go wow, then came vilator, and boy that hit me

I woulnt say the songs dont catch you, caus imo they do. then again, thats my own view and not everyone thinks alike

as for skin, you'll get used to that fast part :P

I still think Sid Icarus is one of the strongest songs on the album. It's just... mad energy!

See, THIS is a good argument! Stating that you like DXM more, because of personal reasons! Nice! :D

I would +1 you if I knew HOW! >_>

You misunderstood me. I didn't say that you thought DXM was better, I just restated that you like DXM more, for personal reasons. I praised your way of thinking, because people like to say that the old stuff was better and then give a bad reason, unlike you. I didn't have to know all the information, but still. :P

The +1 was for karma. :)

Sold my soul to santa and pre-ordered Overworld tonight!
Now I don't feel so bad about having downloaded it, and I'm looking forward to having my very own copy.

I must admit that I prefered the gems in Webography (http://machinaesupremacy.com/webography.html) above almost any song from the two previous albums, but Overworld is great. Every song gives me the awesome feeling of power and control that I get when I put Hero or Arcade on.
My personal favorites: Violator, Stand, Radio Future, Overworld and Sid Icarus (I already loved Flight of the Toyota and Megascorcher from JNG)

9/10

That is why you mix it ALL together! ginormous playlist of all Machinae gives you a plentiful variety of different styles of SID Metal. I have always had troubles when ordering stuff online, I hope this shipment doesn't mess up like all the others :/

So here comes my overworld review.. Well to be honest, I was really nervous for this album release. I really truly love Machinae Supremacy and I think the development they shown and the class of Reedemer album was 9 to 10 out of 10.. Great album. I often say that in total Machinae has more good songs then alot of mega star band like for instance - Offspring. It is totally unfair they cant afford to live of there music just yet.. Back to the review. Me and my girlfriend dropped bye Gordons place to dump his car wich he left the following day at my house. As payment for the service of driving his car back to his place I took the Overworld promo CD that was stuck in the cars CD-player.. "Gordon approved of this with a thumbs up".. So we listened through the whole album as we went from Luleå->Haparanda (girlfriend gets the need for Ikea and visiting her family now and then).. What we experienced during this trip was total music awesomeness... I mean where do you begin. This album has 2-3 Worldclass domination song ala (Winner takes it all bye ABBA, Thriller Michael Jackson). Thats how good I really think it is. Skin, Edge and Pearl, Dark City... its just simply to good to be true. Tbh i cant say that i dont like any of the songs, they are all good with a few diamonds in there to. No worries this album deliverd and now im looking forward to the release party at Kulturens hus this saturday. May I add how excellent the lyrics are. Machinae totally delivers, there lyrics infact do have a meaning... Overworld album, same as reedemer 9,5/10 no doubt... The machinae supremacy bag of goodies just got alot bigger...

Firstly, I apologize for this act of topic necromancy, but I finally got my hands on a brand-new copy of Overworld, so you can understand my enthusiasm ;)

Back to the topic, the only phrase that comes to my mind is "f***ing awesome" (well, actually it's Polish equivalent but nevermind). I just love the balance between SID and guitars, the epicness of songs like Truth of Tomorrow or Skin, and, well, the whole f***ing awesomeness of the whole album (I'm not going to make a good poet, I know)
The only thing I miss is some song with ear-raping riff like Kaori Stomp or Empire, that you could listen to out loud and drive your neighbours mad, but I understand that you can't have everything ;)
If I had to choose my favorites, they would probably be Violator and Truth of Tomorrow, but I'd rather need to listen to the album a bit more.

I have some opinions somewhere else, and while I will eventually write out a full song-by-song review like I (and many others) did for Redeemer, for now I'd like to make one humorous note.

Having played Star Control 2 (now somewhat better known as The Ur-Quan Masters), when listening to Conveyor I automatically replace "humans" with "hunams".

"Stampeding hunams are everywhere"  ;D

I'm waiting for the next album, listening to some of the old web releases and Tom Waits ;D.

Guess I listened it to death.

That's always the case, I learned my lesson a while back. Now I systematically deny extended periods of listening to a brand new album on repeat, so that it may filter into my regular daily listening cycle thus allowing me to enjoy it for longer.

Since this thread is alive again, I'd like to make two little considerations after listening it for a while too. If I say something that has been said before, well, I read part of this thread, but in case I'm wrong sorry  ;D

Anyway, I've noticed a small difference between the leak and the album version of Stand. The sid arpeggio after the 1st chorus in the leak starts right after the chorus then it stops on the 2nd part. On the album release, the sound comes and goes on 02:17 and 02:23.

As for the 2nd consideration, it's more of a suggestion to the band. Both Redeemer and DXM have some nice backvocals, specially on tracks like Insidious and Reanimator. In overworld the backvocals are way simplier, so I think it kinda wastes the potential of some choruses and bridges. Of course, they're great already but that's a suggestion for the next album =)

I did intially play the album to death. However it's one of my primary choices for listening in the car or when mowing the lawn as it's one of the few things I own that sounds RIGHT at its normal tempo. I know I've mentioned it before, but I listen to almost everything at least 7% faster than it was recorded. Some stuff even faster (anything and everything by The Cars, for instance, gets an automatic 30% speed increase).

Even so, there are 3 songs on the album I avoid at all costs. Overworld, Skin, and Sid Icarus.

Overworld I never liked much. Even when it was up on myspace (and I subsequently streamed those songs to mp3s) I didn't listen to it much. Mostly the chorus I don't like so much on that one. Sid Icarus, the lyrics I never could get into at all. And Skin... not a bad song, but a youtube video of that song set to the Star Wars prequilogy killed it. I cannot listen to the song now without picturing that vid, and it is SO the wrong vid for the song...

you make it sound like somebody is chasing you down the road with a giant set of speakers playing overworld. nobodys making you listen, and the songs, even if they're to your dislike, aren't that bad and you know it [:
