I do like kebab humongously. I once did my own kebab, it took over 5 hours in oven before it was ready. But it was worth waiting. Yummy!

Yes, we like our kebab. There's this place at home that serves a really good döner kebab, with chili and garlic sauce. I tend to eat there at least once every time I'm home for an extended period of time (summer, christmas and easter).

Another similar dish, the gyros pita, beats all the kebabs I've eaten, though. Or more specifically, the gyros pita of a small shop on the island Antiparos beats them. Gyros pita is made using the same rotating meat-spear, but the filling is somewhat different. There's usually tomato, red onion and tzatziki, and often fried potato or french fries, and the meat is usually pork. This specific gyros pita did not have fried potatoes or french fries, and was seasoned in a special and very delicious way. If you're ever on Paros, I'd almost say it would be worth it to take a trip over to Antiparos just for the gyros, but that might be a little bit of an overstatement. Antiparos has a nice stalacite grotto, though, and if you're there in the first place...

A kebab can mean something very different in the UK, but yes on occassion when very drunk i like kebab.

Only when drunk? Don't get me wrong, kebab is the ultimate drunk food, but it's good when you're not drunk too.

It is however best with a glass of beer by its side. Which is the way I often eat it. Beer, kebab and a good movie or something, with a friend or two around the table.

I do, but it depends on places you got it.
Once, I ate a kebab that tasted feet seasonned with vomit. Probably a dog and not a sheep for the meat. Anyway, I finished it.

I ate a Kebab in Italy, which had whole potatoes and stuff, so it was more like shredded sheep steak with potatoes and garlic sauce in a breadroll.

I've tasted that once when I was in greece. It was on our last day there and damn how I've missed that dish :) I bought it at a small place in a small town near athens and I'm yet to find such tasty fast food. I love greek food in general too. I like to make my own tzatziki every now and then, usually turns out quite good. I'll share the recipe if you want to :)

Oh, and back to topic. Yes, I do like kebab.

Best drunk memory I have, ever - going down to the kebab shop at 4am in the morning with a few mates (in the middle of winter), getting a kebab each, and eating them under the entrance of an old run-down building, sheltered from the pouring rain.

Kebabs taste so much better while drunk, and soaked in rain, blood, sweat, tears and vomit.

I puked on a car. HARDCORE.

The best times is when you remember being at a pub/party/whatever, about to leave. Then the next thing you remember is sitting with a nice hot kebab in your hands, ready to dig in. All good things in, shitty things like taking the bus to the kebab out.

Now that's an good idea. I have been little bit puzzled of him not introducing himself properly yet but since he fits here so well I thought what the hell. But now when someone else has noted this very serious thing as well I strongly agree that we should get proper introduction.

Dimster, gyros is different meat, i think.

they call it 'kebab' in queensland, 'souvlaki' in victoria and 'gyros' or 'yiros' in northern territory. its all kinda the same thing to me... but gyros has a different sauce i think.. i really love gyros as opposed to whats marketed as kebab here.

whaaaaa? hereabouts, those are all different food items... wikipedia, however, confirms the naming differences. weirdos.

It's because she's upside down
Title: Re: Do you like kebab?
Post by: Torp v2.0 on March 12, 2007, 05:44:42 pm
Yeah, they're different dishes.

Souvlaki is meat grilled on a skewer, though you can get souvlaki pitas, where the meat is taken off the skewer and served in a pita, which is very similar to gyros pita except for the meat used. Kebab is the name for a whole load of different meat dishes originating from the Middle East. Often, it's used to mean döner kebab. The döner kebab uses the same kind of vertical rotisserie as the gyros meat, and the meat may be the same (though gyros meat is often pork, which you'll never find in a real kebab). There is a huge difference in filling, though, a gyros pita being almost defined as using tzatziki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tzatziki) (the "different sauce" Dimmie's referring to), onion and tomato, and often fried potatoes/french fries. Some minor variations may exist, but anything very different from that recipe is not a real gyros pita.

Kebabs vary much more in filling and use of sauce.

Yes, I agree with Father Whapmeister. Make shish kebab out of the interloping chav!

I mean, really. Chop him into pieces and grill him. Then he'll learn not to punch people in the face.

Okay, actually, he won't learn, but he'll never do it again. Unless you just amputate a part of him and make shish kebab out of it, that is. Preferably his leading arm. So he can't punch people, and must resort to kicking.

Of course, since he'd know who you were by then, you might run the risk of getting into trouble with the police. I therefore advice you to get a high-ranking position in some secret world-government with enough power to make the police ignore his requests.

"Now I think you showed some bad taste back at the snack stand. You gave me finger... Well... I take it, mince it, grill it and then serve it with good sauce. And you're going to eat it all the way like a good boy you are. Not hungry? Well... Where are you going to need your tongue then? What? Now you're hungry? Try to decide, man, kebab is getting cold and you know how angry I get when good food goes wasted..."

The "American Way" in Sweden is generally considered what we are fed by stuff like "Super Size Me", Michael Moore, Penn & Teller (nothing against Penn & Teller, but they do an awesome job in rooting out the most stupid representatives of your country concievable) and the ridiculously stupid looks of your president. That means that the "American Way" = being fat, stupid and wanting to destroy anything with a piece of cloth on the head longer than half a meter.
Understanding and practicing the "American Way" in this sense would be considered a bad thing by most.

Yes... that was the satire in my post.  :P

Oh, I thought you were just being stupid =P

No sir. I'm well aware of how the rest of the world views my country.  :P

Funny... I was just yesterday reading book "Sword and hilt weapons" and got into part with blades of Islam. From there I got to Turkish blades and guess what? I was watching those beautiful blades and read descriptions and history of their swordmaking and suddenly, amidst being fully immersed in those blades I start thinking about... kebab. Kebab! I could not get image of Turkish blades cutting kebab out of my head and I just started wondering whether those blades, as large part of local culture, had anything to contribute on their cooking as in kebab? Probably not but who knows? Thought about kebab ruined my reading session which was otherwise so perfect.

Kebab = passion

I read that as "pants".

Ah, what the hell!

1. Americans

USA is a land with many sides to me. If we're to go by what media tells us, it's a land of bigotry, religious fundamentalism and unhealthy amounts of nationalism, with a few liberals sprinkled around the east coast. On the other side, most americans I've gotten to know has shown him- or herself to be a decent and likeable person. This includes my quite religious uncle (who works in a world-spanning religious theater group known as Covenant Players (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covenant_players)), his family, the people my aunt and he has had over from either Covenant Players or from the american church (they're our neighbours, so if they have guests in the summer, we have a quite good chance of meeting their friends), and members of forums such as this (excluding the occasional spam-whore and troll). Which is more than what I can say for norwegians. Of course, I've met a whole lot more norwegians than I've met americans, so I might just have lucked out.

2. Kebab as drunk food

I've never actually had kebab as drunk food at home. The best kebab I've tasted, which is from the shop at home, I might eat with a beer by its side (because beer is an awesome beverage with such good and fatty food), but that will be my first, maybe second beer for the evening (out of maximum three or four).

The kebabs up here in Trondheim have been consumed while drunk, though.

Well, on places like this you're bound to meet more intellectually pleasing individuals, no matter where from...

As for the media thing, well, it's the media.  :P They show what sells. It's the same thing here and anywhere else.

I can tell you, though, the concentration of liberals in America is on both of the coasts. The reason it seems so focused here is because the northeast is a university region, with most of the (arguably) best schools in the country sitting within a few states of each other, so naturally the college and city atmospheres attract a more liberal demographic..
