Title: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Post by: Spunky on November 12, 2006, 06:41:49 pm
Ahhh, finally, a thread about the new cool on the PC :D

Whose got it and what do you play?

I used to be a space marine player but they have been nerfed so HARD i have gone back to Imperial Guard (i had a long spout as them when WA was released). They have changed the imperial guard and they fit my play style _perfectly_. God damn love them.

I think the expansion is absolutely amazing, no other expansion i know gives you so much to do, PLUS a very clever system of use of other expansions/original game.

Having seen my brother play it, I can safely say that Kroot Carnivores are hugely OP. They jump into stuff, it dies.

Look at some of the other end units and you'll see it's about the same power.

Plus you shoot the kroot in general from a distnce.  The whole idea is that they lack ranged but are brutal in melee.. the oppisite of the Tau themselves.

I'm waiting patently to get this, but I do own the orginal game and can say that it's worth obtaining.

My boyfriend said he'd get it for me for my birthday.. jsut a few more weeks.. :)

I like the orks, personally, though I'm shyte at playing them.

Yer, looks quite good and you can try the demo if you want...

Though, my brother ran off with the CD Keys so I can't really play it now. Might buy myself a copy sometime.

again, if it' sso unballanced, why ahs the ranked play been at roughly 50/50 win/loss for EVERY race in the game sence they started to post the results?

I beleive it's a case of "I don't know how to play the game, so I'm going to claim it's unbalanced."  here.
Title: Re: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Post by: Goshawk on November 13, 2006, 12:13:49 am
It probably just balances out with the large amount of games played. I'm not currently too knowledgable about the start of DC, but before it, I was in touch with most of the imbalances in the other patches; and I can tell you it was imba before. For example, in 1.3, defilers were stupidly powerful and Orc's lank of AV against them made it even worse.

From looking around I guess Necrons are the best race, though again I don't really know that much specifically. And yes, there's always bound to be some imbalances in any RTS, but in past versions of DoW the imba has been sometiming principally recognised.

Games with the latest securom such as NWN2 have already been cracked, within days of release at that. Patch it to kill cracks? Ha, one of the first things most games change in a patch is that they remove the DRM because it causes so many problems for legitimate customers.

For bugs, yes it has bugs. A fuck load? No. Lets compare it toooooooooo BF2142. That has a CTD timer of 1 hour for me (or anytime i hit alt+tab). In DoW a few units are bugged like:

Heavy Weapon teams entrenching to their _previous_ location instead of current. You undeploy and redeploy, no problem.
Necron Greater Summoning Core can be two shotted for some reason.

As for imbalances, well, what game doesn't have them xD Its about how you counter them. Theres only one army that scares me, and thats the orks. I think every other army has an equal chance of winning/losing. The orks though... so many... so many....

"Uuuugh boss. Are wez gettin' shot at?!"

I downloaded Dawn Of War quite a while back, I still have it on my pc iirc, still unable to play it because every time a crack is released, they release a patch.

I just wanna play it with my friends online but it patches it through the client so its awkward to crack.

Pre Winter Assault, I was unstoppable with eldar.

Then i experimented with the imperial guard in WA, but fared better in multiplayer with space marines.

In Table top 40k, I have an Imperial army consisting of elements of the Crimson Fists Space marine chapter and the Rynn's World Planetary Defence Force.

Hmm. It certainly only dropped to about 45% at the lowest, never went that low. Orks were so weak in 1.3. :/

Can you play the game on lan with same cd-key? Cause I was thinking of buying the game and then playing it with my friend in LAN cause I have been talking to him about the original DoW since the came out. And I heard that if you only have the DC you can only use necrons and tau in multiplayer, so only tau and necrons in lan? :(
Title: Re: Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
Post by: Spunky on November 15, 2006, 04:21:13 pm
I don't know for sure but one cool thing of this game, it requires no cd to run. If only all games did this.

DoW has a clever expansion system if you ask me. You can by DC and decide which army is "you". If its tau or necron, look no further. If its SM, Eldar, Orks or Chaos then buy the original game. If its IG then you have to buy them all. People have been saying "omg you have to buy them all?! What a ripoff!"

Tell me one game where you can buy the expansion which has _all_ the features of the original game, therefore making it a stand alone game and not an expansion at all. lol

But yah, I might as well go and buy the game and see if I can play on lan with my friend

Besides, those battlesuits are better than any turrets. =P

Okay, I went out on friday or thursday and bought the Anthology pack. AND ITS DARN GREAT :P. Im really loving the Taus as much as I love the tabletop version of Tau. Taus are really great when you just get like 2-3 fire warrior squads, 1 pathfinder squad, around 3 kroot carnivore squads with leaders in them and them some tanks if you want to that mix. The fire warriors are really godly :o, especially if you get down the Silen Hunter path and get the upgrade that allows your units to see farther and have longer range = fire warriors shoot way longer they can see :P.

Necrons are darn annoying to play against as sometimes they dont seem to die at all, but in the end they die like every other one and they are slow as hell too :P

I kinda started with Necrons at start, but then I got ownered cause I sucked with them at that time, then I played Tau campaign through and while doing that I started with every race than Orks and Guards :P. I think I might play necrons next through, they are pretty nice race to play :o.

Oh wow. I just played an hour and a half long game. 3v3. Kasyr Lutien (the city map with the 3 bridges on either side)
One of their players dropped out at the start, so I rushed in, and got thrashed. I moved my base right into the middle of the map..
So, we had some complete total n00b on our team (Eldar, figures..) that didnt realise it was QS. He was like
"wow, QS? i have loads of resources lol!! im building mines around my base, they'll never get me!! :D :D :D"
He sat there in his base with 2 guardian squads or something, building blocks of mines all over the show, so much so that he couldnt even build around his base. Ohgod. He left about 5 minutes after us hurling abuse at him, saying he was tired and he was going to bed :(.

So me and this other guy on my team are building huge blocks of missile turrets at every strat point, and strongholds at the back side of the map, with me building a hugeunstoppablearmy™ in the middle of the map. I had like 6 chaos preds and 8 posessed squads, and sent them into the middle, to find that they'd done the exact same thing, building huge friggin blocks of missile turrets. My army got devastated, and they launched a counter-attack, that got absolutely raped by my line of defense in the center of the map.

We kept throwing attacks at each other, not really getting anywhere at all. Occasionally, he'd orbital relay a load of dreadnaughts right into the back of our base at our stack of plasma generators, in attempt to disable us. I think he'd sent some infiltration scouts round there, past our chaos sorcs. Anyway, we managed to fend off these attacks, they didnt really send that many dreadnaughts because they were trying to hold their front line, which I was constantly pushing (it really helped to be in the middle ;)), but not really getting anywhere. This dragged on for a whole hour, pulling back, regrouping, making more chaos preds, more squads etc, attacking again, getting my forces wiped out, being attacked, watching my turrets rip them to shreds, pushing them back, same happening to my troops.. My ally was constantly making defilers, bombarding their bridges, keeping them locked into their bases.

Just as I'd near-given up hope, I found that his defilers had destroyed a hole in their turrets, leaving an entire bridge free to run through. I sent all my troops in, destroyed one of their bases, and my whole army getting killed in the process. I guess he'd built another base in his ally's base though, because he still hadnt dropped out..

We rebuilt our armies, me and my ally, and we positioned them around his base. He put up a damn good fight, and eventually one of their players dropped out because he was too tired. Our armies got killed again, but we knew the next push would win the game.

Finally, we managed to build our armies up and push that last attack. We won the game at 1 hour 34 minutes and 41 seconds.

Why the fuck did I just type all this? :D No-one will read it..

EDIT: Small world.. Turns out my teammate in that game lives 5mins walk from me :o no shitting. Woah.

Played some Winter Assault last night, and.. It wasnt made by the same production team, right? Because the single player plays really.. strangely. Pretty confusing, switching between two warring sides, and the new art for the Chaos units is annoying - why bother changing it!?

On another note, Khorne Beserkers = WIN x10! I love how they just twitch around and make crazy ARHGHGEHGHFGHEGHGFLFLF sounds. Their armour is awesome, too.

Shame about the Imperial Guard, though. All their buildings are HUGE. Their construction.. boxes? Clip through things, and units can walk through them.. They feel a bit sloppily made, and the whole system of commisars etc is annoying, having to attach one to every squad you make.. The actual guardsmen are pretty useless, too. They shouldve at least upped the cap for them, because they're just too damn weak. I guess IG would be pretty useless for online games too, as they have no powerful standard unit, they seem to be based around their vehicles, which are pretty crap anyway. The Sentinel walker reminds me of an Eldar Brightlance, but bigger and clumsier. All it does is just zap vehicles.. Meh. A lot of their force is toned down for the BaneBlade, which will 9/10 times never get built in online games..

Overall, pretty dissapointed with Winter Assault so far, but I suppose I've barely touched the surface yet, with only having played 4 Disorder campaigns thus far.

Oh, on another note, the voicing is BAD. VERY BAD. Orkamungus' voice just irritates me with the constant grunting, not very ear friendly tbh, and the Chaos Lord sounds like he needs some Lemsip. The new Chaos Sorcerer voice sounds wayy too camp, too.

Same. There's definately a way. Soon as I finish conquering a planet with my necron hordes, I'm gonna try and complete it again. =P

It's nothing to do with micro, this mission is actually friggin impossible. Spike, if you complete that mission, send me a saved game eh?

Would if I could, but apparently WA dislikes all virtual CD drive-readers...it won't work on the same computer as deamontools, alcohol120, etc. Overzealous copy protection sucks. =/

Tau or Necrons?

Discuss.

edit: i beat that hour long game btw - just had a 2hr 4m offline skirmish practicing with Necron. 4v4 std on one of those crazy DC 8-player maps.

Tau. Necrons take too long. Though map control ain't really necessary, and the summoning is useful.

Necrons. They need to be dead in 10 minutes or less, unless you wish to be screwed. Hard, and painfully, by a metal robot.

Best way to deal with them - run  up and build a happy little turret near them. Good if it's near a req. point, so you can build your base on theuir doorstep.

I try playing IG, but usually die (Argh! Assault marines/raptor rush!). I'm too loyal to my TT army...

I've only just started playing DC, after playing 120 games or so on original DoW. I mainly play as either Chaos or SM, but they nerfed everything and changed everything around in DC, so I'm not really sure what race I wanna play as now.

hurray!

anyhow, I've lately pulled out DoW from the rack and finally completed it, and now I've bought meself the full anthology, hurray! (and now even have some time at my hands).

So, just one question, when I'm going to play Winter Assault SP now, is there any reasons to already install Dark Crusade? I.e. will the latter if installed have any influence on the Winter Aussault SP campaign (modified rules or anything)?

cheers!

I've got up through WA and Eldar is my race of choice. By far the best rushing race in the game.

Are you really sure about that? Cause as far as I can tell, Eldar are pretty weak untill you tech them up a bit.

Fire Prisms are their only real power unit...prefer the Guard for rushing, myself.

Possibly, but their voices just annoy me. I end up yelling at my units.

"Boss! We'z gettin' shot up!"
"I DON'T FUCKING CARE!"

...Yes, I know.

Nice to know I'm not the only one who tends to argue out loud with my units... this goes for pretty much any game, btw. :P

I don't argue, so much as scold them.

"WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING, YOU MORON?! Go THAt way! NO, DON'T RUN INTO THE TURRET...! Damnit. Served him right."

Well, through WA Eldar were nice on the whole teleport to random spots and lay down turrets on the req points. Or, on smaller maps, right outside the enemy base. Now I hate Eldar in DC, not least because some moron decide to give their leader person a new voiceover that sounds HORRIBLE. I mean, poor inflection, wrong emotions at the wrong times... ugh. And the playstyle...

I still hate Imperial Guard and Orks more. I also have never played Chaos. I love Tau but hate that they don't have an actual turret defense. However, 10 squads of elite bodyguard Firewarriors + line of sight is beyond deadly to most anything that gets in their range. And you don't even want to witness the evil of 20 stealthed scout squads jetpacking into your base from out of nowhere with fully upgraded guns. And then there's the infinite drone army technique...

I also like Necrons, except they strike me as more of a melee race than a ranged race... part of why I liked the Eldar, even though I tend to favor ranged to melee...

Infiltrated units, tankbustaz, Mass vehicles, mass rockets, mass lascannons, deamons or assault terminators deep striking, warp spiders and their grenades, assault marines plus meltabombs.

More on demand.

How about 10 sentinels?

I love just building loads of tier 2 imp vehicles and swamping people with them...well, the computer. People do't usually let me do that.

Really? Interesting...

Necrons should just possess one, then, and turn it against the other.

Well, just beaten the tau with space marines on normal...Lots of assault and sniper squads. Meltabomb the vehicles, snipe the infantry and battlesuits. Dreadnaught drops for anything that just won't die.
