I'm getting it for sure.

My friend just forwarded this to me:

Quote
Gears of War After Hours Preview
"Gear up" for the November 7 release this Saturday, October 21, at our Gears of War After Hours Preview.

After participating stores close, customers 17 years of age or older will be readmitted for a sneak peek at exclusive video content for Gears of War. Anyone caught with a fake moustache will be sent home immediately, without a glass of milk or cookies. While supplies last, FREE lanyards, pins and gamer id tags will be given to those who attend.

In addition, you can purchase either a 3-month or 12-month Xbox Live Kit at $5 OFF the regular price. Stores will only be open one hour for this event. Contact your local GameStop to confirm participation and event details.

I don't particularly care about any of the swag, but I would like to see some of this exclusive video. Gives me something to do beyond drinking on a Saturday night as well, so I'm probably gunna be going to that. If you're excited about Gears of War, you may want to check to see if your local gamestops are doing the pre-release party.

Awesome, the game is gonna be sweet, but I didn't realize it was going to be released so early (Nov 7.)

Yep. It's right around the corner.

Tomorrow, Friday October 20th, we have Splinter Cell: Double Agent coming out as well. It's actually a pretty exciting time for an Xbox 360 gamer. Splinter Cell has always made a great distraction for me, never stayed a primary game for me for long but I still played it quite a bit to keep things fresh.

Gears of War, if its nearly as good as its hyped up to be, should honestly keep me pretty busy into 2007 when some other major titles start to fall into our lap.

Just read that it is banned in Germany due to graphic nature(It can't be M rated because of the MASSIVE amount of gore) that makes me jitter.

Yet nobody said anything about Dead Rising?...

That's really weird, though. I haven't seen any previews that would indicate the game is shockingly gory compared to what else is on the market.

Go to google news and look up Gears of War. Plus Dead Rising was comic gore and it was a satire, it wasn't meant to be a horror game that Gears is meant to be.

Yeah, which means I have to drive about an hour to the Netherlands to get the game. Good work, German authorities.

Some companies tend to disable shipping of the product to countries that ban them.

I seem to recall people trying to get Grand Theft Auto and having difficulties, though I can't remember where it was banned.

I dunno if you've read about it, but in the online co-op mode, the two players can call down a satellite strike, and each one coordinates a separate beam (or part of the beam?). If they put them together there's a cool bonus, and it lasts longer.

Not to mention it's on-the-fly joining. Like Lego Star Wars.

Co-op online, since it is the complete cinematic campaign. Wont miss out on the story and whatnot, its like playing through singleplayer with a friend online ;)

I hope Halo 3 has that as well. I hated Doom 3's becuase it was short and cut out the cinematics and the story.

It gets better. You don't have to sit around waiting at all.

You can be sitting there playing through the single player campaign on your own... A friend comes on to xbox-live, you send them an invite... BAM! they've joined your game, midway through the mission. That, my friends, is the beauty of xbox live.

Recently the devs of Resistance for the ps3 announced that while in their game you can't recieve messages from other users, you have to boot back to the dash to do that. I just have to laugh at all the people who'll have to put up with that.

EDIT: http://xboxmovies.teamxbox.com/xbox-360/3699/X06-Gears-of-War-Cliff-Bleszinski-Explains-CoOp-Mode/ there's where i found out about the co-op.
Title: Re: Gears of War
Post by: Drakonis on October 24, 2006, 10:46:57 pm
That's some super sexy news. I like that the single-player and the co-op modes are one and the same. It's also nice that they did it so you unlock acheivements and chapters together, so the host isnt the only one making progress in the campaign when his buddy joins him.

It's like single-player you can share with the world. Another step at bringing everyones living rooms together via xbox live ;)

Cool find man.

There is local co-op which would be split screen, yes. (two people, one TV/one xbox)

But if you LAN or play over live, no it's not.

My girlfriends birthday is 11/12.... launch day. Guess I'll be playing the day after, lol =)

Looks like I have one last genuine hope for Gears of War today. Wal-Mart guy said he was expecting it today but the UPS shipment hasnt came yet (they run late there apparently). He said hes hoping and theres a good shot that Gears of War will be in it. So I'll swing back by there in about 2 hours with my fingers crossed. If not I'll have to wait until tomorrow after work to play it.

With the cover system, reload system, and otherwise horror deep story presentation, coop intuitiveness, and whatnot... looks quite different to me :P

Its supposedly much more tactical than the games you've listed, as theyre more twitch based, this game is supposed to be easy to pick up but difficult to master the tactics. Anyone running around in the open and not diving from cover to cover is supposedly going to become a corpse quick.

I read a review which said the game length pretty much triples if you put it on the hardest difficulty. It also said it's pointless playing it on the lowest difficulty because tactics pretty much go out the window.

I've got two copies pre-ordered, as soon as they come through the door im pumping the difficulty as high as it'll go and playing through it co-op over the network with my brother ;D

COD2 on veteran is fucking ridiculous. So hard and yet so fun. A mate of mine bought COD2 and said he hated it because it wasn't tactical and you could just run around shooting people. I tried to explain to him that any game is like that if you play it on the easiest difficulty, but he didn't seem to understand. IMO to really enjoy a game you HAVE to put the difficulty up a little bit.

How many difficulty levels are there for gears? if there's 2 or 3 i'll put it on the hardest, if there's 4 or 5 i'll probably put it one level below the hardest for my first run through. I'm assuming that having it on co-op will make it a bit easier than just going solo.

Supposedly the AI Dom is very intelligent and effective.

I believe there are three difficulties. Normal, Hard, and Hardcore or some such.

On Hardcore you have to give orders and be 100% effective yourself and with your squad. From what I saw in the review, Gametrailer.com peeps wern't able to do it. It was simply too difficult.

I fully intend on going through Hardcore though, but I dont know if im starting on that. I want to start on a challenging level to experience the game and the thrills, then I'll go back for that mission impossible stuff ;)

I wrote a gigantic post, I mean seriously... HUGE. I know I'd take mad flack for that (I basically went into extreme detail about all the aspects of the game). I'm removing all that... :\

To sum it up: the game lived up to the hype. I had more fun yesterday playing that game than I probably have any console game to date. It was an absolute blast. If the game has lasting power, I'd say it's the best game we've seen in a long time.

Yes, yes it is. We need to play sometime Harvey.

I'm running through co-op with a friend on Hardcore (I'm on the last Act I believe). After that though, if you wanna run through it I'd be more than happy. Honestly the versus mode is even fantastic. I'd have hardcore done with if I could have played more than an hour last night. :\

Soon it will be time to play insane, where I will enjoy the thrills of being reamed over and over again.

Oh, pot and kettle time from EA Montreal manager Alain Tascan:
Quote
Speaking in a panel discussion at the Montréal Games Summit, Tascan said, "What is Gears of War? I mean Gears of War brings nothing in terms of innovation to the shooter... Like, zero.

"Only two very brave UK-based journalists said, 'You know what, Gears of War is a great game but it's like what Quake was a few years ago.

"Why are people loving it so much? It's like added production value, incredible cutscenes and the best ever graphics ever. I'm sure it's going to be a great success, I can't wait to play it, but let's face that graphics are still number one," Tascan continued.

I'm running through hardcore with my cousin (About to finish act three). I'd be happy to play with you aftr I finished, though. Maybe we could even run through insane, and get reamed together.  :D

The multiplayer is killer, too. I said "one more game" all the way until 3 AM last night. Only problem I had was actually FINDING a game to play. I kept getting a message saying "could not connect to host" or something like that. Now I just keep pressing the refresh button and try joining games until I find one. Still haven't played assassination or execution, unfortunately.

Well.  I didn't expect to have nearly as much fun as I just did playing this game.

I rented it because the host on the radio show is doing a special on it next week, and I just spent three hours playing splitscreen co-op with my friend.  I really enjoy this game.

Some points of interest:
- It's not an FPS - the game is third-person and the emphasis is on finding and using good cover.  Run and gun will get you killed unless you do it at the right time.
- Enemies take a surprising amount of damage before dying.  You cannot run around simply making clever headshots.  Downing an enemy usually requires having cover before making some kind of an attack.
- The chainsaw-gun thing is really fun to use and makes a spectacular mess.  Ahahahaha I love this weapon.
- When you're downed, you aren't necessarily dead - the other player can come over and heal you.  Unless you get killed in the meantime while you're sitting there bleeding.  This rewards staying together and, among other things, makes it riskier to attempt to flank the enemy recklessly.
- There is a button that looks at things.  During an important event it will focus in on the object of interest, and during battle it will focus on your teammate, which covers for your characters' peripheral vision which is usually underrepresented in games.
- There is a lot of war but so far the game has featured exactly one gear, and it was kind of a stretch.  This game's title is a giant lie. :)

I expected very little other than a fun shooter and I have ended up very impressed by this game.  Any of you guys who aren't sure about it ought to give it a rental.

And I haven't even touched online multiplayer yet :D

Hell, you play as Dominic in co-op, if you're the second player. And he actually has a personality!  =O

Congrats to Draky and Apt to thier promotion to Mod.

Yeah, I'm loving Gears for both it's co-op and it's multiplayer. I'm plowing through insane right now as well. I must say, I wish it was a tad harder. Don't get me wrong, certain aspects are very difficult. Locust can charge you and even if you're in cover their aim is so good you may not drop the non-covering locust. But if you work together, you'll ease through alot of the insane difficulty mode.

Also, grenades are my best friend. Four kills on acsension with ONE grenade. Stuck it to a guy on the stairs and he took cover right next to his clustered team. Most hilarious spew of blood I've ever seen in my life.

lol, I got a triple kill doing the same thing.

Some points:

 - Online multiplayer is a bit unbalanced, its ALL bout the weps not neccesarily bout the skill (which sucks for me as I can't find the god damn weapons!)
 - Online you MUST play as a team or you'll die (found this out when I played with Harvey)
 - The shotgun RoXXor's my soXXor's! (The only weapon besides the machinae gun I'm good with)
 - The chainsaw is  awesome (though it has some bugs that need to be kinked out)
 - Multliplayer is ALWAYS to the death (which I think is lame and VERY limiting, I wish it would have been an option in the setup)
 - Very very nice on an HD tv!

If you've played Halo 2 or Quake 4 alot this game on multliplayer is gonna kick your ass online cause your gonna think your still the juggernaut and can absorb multiple shots or think that your gonna repawn. Take your time in multiplayer and work as a team.

Also my free 2 day XBOX live sub is up, so you guys won't see me online for awhile.

I just want to add one note here. I'm not big fan of Xbox, on the contrary. But today I just saw TV-commercial of Gears Of War with "Mad World" playing at background. It was beautiful and it was convincing. If I were person who think that it's affordable to buy console just for one game I would buy Xbox just to play this one. Unfortunately I have very thin budget so it will never happen (plus I don't like console-controls in FPS, mouse and keyboard are best so far). But I think that I visit one of my friends with Xbox and take some tests, just in case... And if it some day is (I know it is not but...) converted to PC I will definetly buy it.

Possibly my favorite video game commercial of all time.

And it's not an FPS, it's third person shooter. Very easy to play, but very difficult to master.

Finnish computer mag MikroBitti just recently published netnews about Gears Of War. There was unconfirmed rumour that GOW might be published on PC as well. If that ever happen (that you can play it on PC, especially without Vista)  I definetly buy it. If it takes Vista then I just have to live without it... T_T
Title: Re: Gears of War

if it comes to pc, it'll almost definitely be only on vista. microsoft are trying hard to push vista as a gaming platform.

as with halo, i think that pc users will be waiting a long long time for it to happen (if it ever does). so don't hold your breath.
Title: Re: Gears of War

That's my fear. It's somewhat sad that slowly PC genre is turning like another platform like consoles. Instead of promoting (only) hardware they are promoting operating systems too. I just wish that Linux wereworking  better for gaming so that I could abandon Windows altogether. XP already had many feats I don't like and with Vista they are going even further down the hole where the stink comes. Hopefully they don't forget that there are big markets among older operating system's users. Just wish that they would do one operating system that would work fine for more than 5 years. I hate that huge mistake they did when they went from 98 to 2k. I don't want to lose games I like because they are abandoning or over-updating their operating systems so they are not backwards compatible with these games and programs. And those inbuild "copy-protection systems"... They can shove it up their...

So although I fear that Vista is the only means to play GOW at PC IF it ever is released on it I don't believe that I ever get that. If Vista is left as only choice for Windows OS I will move ultimately to Linux. I left this XP as other OS only for gaming so that I can play those games I already have and hope that future games have good support for Linux.
Title: Re: Gears of War

Vista has many features that make it desirable for Microsoft games. You need to keep in mind you can't just make a game that's universal and runs on all operating systems. It requires alot of porting and reworking. Most games have always been for a single platform (with a MAC port perhaps). Linux games are typically running off of emulation software from what I know about Linux.

The fact is, Vista is also the only means in which to make games campatable with the 360. Vista gamers and 360 gamers can play together in harmony. A PC port of a 360 game is hitting the Vista because its fully compatible due to the Live! Anywhere software inside of Vista.

Shadowrun players for example can load it up on their Vista PC or their 360 and game TOGETHER as if they were both playing on a console (or a PC). Halo 2 will also be using Live! Anywhere, but will not allow 360 gamers and PC gamers to play together since Halo 2 was not a 360 game to begin with (plus there are control issues that could come about). The new Halo 2 however is Vista/360, which means acheivements for your Live account.

All in all, think of Vista as a way to turn your PC into a 360. Most 360 ports will be exclusive so that the two can remain seemless alternatives (or compliment each other). There will soon be PC gamers on Xbox Live! - if they have Vista.

I don't think its a marketing sham, this technology simply wasn't around when the XP was designed. Vista is being designed ground up to basically act as a gaming machine that will intigrate well into Live! as well as having the all the extra compatibility goodness that Media Center XP had but failed to market to XP users.

I understand your quam with buying a new OS, but they do get outdated. You couldn't run games like Oblivion on 98 even if they tried to port it.

XP is now getting outdated, it's time to move on.

As per Linux, I wouldn't be suprised if we see a Vista compatible linux in the future. Software for XP has been emulated successfully, I don't see why Vista software won't be.

Edit: and I'm going by what limited knowledge I have on this subject. I will not claim to know SQUAT about Linux other than what I've read. I do know Vista appeals to me for reasons totally not related to this post though, I am interested in getting my hands on it.

If getting a new OS is required to bring some of this compatibility that I as a gamer haven't had a chance to experience in the past, I'm willing to do it.

On another note, for those of you interested in Vista, check for promotions. They're giving it away like hotcakes. I helped my friend purchase a new PC at best buy. He just needed a $500 machine to work on. He got a great deal on the machine he ended up with and it came with a mail-in slip from best buy for a free copy of vista when it releases. If you have any desire to get Vista, check around. You may luck out. He was buying that machine one way or the other, so it was a nice bonus for him. I know theres other "specials" for this thing. I'm wondering if the Zune will come with some sort of rebate or Vista promotion.

I got to the end of act 2 last night. Would have gotten a lot further, but my brother took quite a while to get good at the game, so i had to spend quite a lot of time waiting for him to work out where he was going :P

Moved my hdtv down into the lounge, so i was playing on my 26" lcd acer, and my brother was playing on my dad's 42" sony plasma, it was absolutely incredible looking.

first impressions: OMG IT'S AMAZING! the gameplay is fantastic, cover system works really well. so many times i was just thinking to myself "how can ANYONE justify waiting for a ps3... when the 360 has THIS!"

This game looks directly cool, and I really do hope the PC rumour is true. I'd love to play this game Co-Op with friends.

The only thing I have to say from the videos I've seen is that the enemies seems a bit too tough. I don't like it when I have to shoot at an enemy for several seconds before he goes down. Give them faster reflexes and better accuracy rather than infernal toughness.

It's okay for bosses and monsters, like that huge pillar-breaking thing, but for the grunts, I'd like a half-second of bullets crossing through the brain to be a kill.

On normal mode, it's pretty easy to kill them (realistic). It only takes a while to kill them on hardcore and insane. But you have to remember, they ARE monsters. And really, really tough-skinned ones at that.

Yeah, but...I just don't like it when the game balances difficulty by giving the enemies more health. Put up more enemies, or make the player able to endure less damage, or up the reaction time of the enemies (the latter works best for games where you have little health to begin with, such as Rainbow Six).

Take Far Cry. I never finished that game, because I hated how the Tri-Gen thingies could take literally magazines of assault rifle ammo. I really liked the earlier parts when i fought just humans, though.

The enemies can be downed very quickly if you aim for their head. Plus the Torque Bow, Shotgun, Sniper Rifle, and other weapons of the sort can all one-shot even the toughest Theron Guard.

I've been playing the crap out of this. Going for every single achievement and I'm making wonderful progress.

Beat the game on Hardcore then on Insane as Dom, so I got all that. I'm working on the Versus achievements now. I got the curb stomps, executions, 100 torque bow kills, 100 sticky grenade kills (As well as all the easy ones like first place in a match, win 10 matches without a loss, around the world, mix it up, etc). I'm very close to having 100 kills with the Longshot (sniper rifle) and 100 headshot fatalities (non-execution insta-kill headshots. Not as easy to get as you'd think since alot of weapons won't kill an enemy with a headshot, often times only downs them and then it no longer counts as a headshot. Lancer (machinegun) for example cannot achieve a headshot fatality.

For some reason this game just melded with me very quickly and I'm doing very very well in Versus mode. I'm loving it. Have a look at the achievements, I'm proud of em ;)

I should be online. I probably have to work Saturday so I may not be up past 1EST at the maximum though. Saturday night I can stay up til my eyes bleed.

If we get started in the evening though on Friday, like around 5 or 6 EST, thats still a crapload of gaming.

Just read that it is banned in Germany due to graphic nature(It can't be M rated because of the MASSIVE amount of gore) that makes me jitter.

Yeah, which means I have to drive about an hour to the Netherlands to get the game. Good work, German authorities.

The little kids knocked over my 360 while my cousin and I were playing Gears yesterday, so now there's a nice circular scratch on the disc, and it won't play. =/

My aunts offered to pay for it, but until they give me the money, I can't play Gears.

Well, no PC version for Gears, yet:

http://www.xboxic.com/news/2042 (http://www.xboxic.com/news/2042)

It also says Gears won't be a trilogy, and it seems like they're hinting at a franchise, like Mario or Final Fantasy.

I honestly hope not, because that'd ruin the series after having such an outstanding opening.

had my first proper taste of the Gears of War multiplayer this evening.

Started off by playing a bit of co-op with fallout, which was great fun. Then a bit later on my cousin came round, and me him and my brother spent a good few hours playing it online.

it has quite a steep learning curve, but once i got used to it i had an absolute blast. it's definitely up there with Halo2 mp, just for the sheer fun of it.

The chainsaws are a bit unbalanced, and it seems to be very random as to who will strike first, which can get a bit annoying at times... but i dont think ive EVER had as much fun in a video game as the time when i was the only person left on my team, and i managed to take out all 4 of my opponents using just the chainsaw. i was laughing like a maniac ;D

Oh yeah, and headshots with a sniper rifle are SOOOOOOOOOOO unbelievably satisfying!! ;D

If you actually hit the head, and not the shoulder an inch away.  :P

I wish that if you hit people using the sniper rifle in-scope, they'd leave the scope. But nooo...

Oh, yeah, I got my game back. Huzzah!

The chainsaw is a big deal when you first start. Once you get comfortable, it's not so much a big deal. The only times I get chainsawed are the times a shotgun woulda done the trick too. (From behind, or sprinting past a corner without checking it).

Any other time someone tries to chainsaw me they get a quick melee from whatever weapon I'm using (which stuns them and effectively causes their instant demise) or a quick burst of fire from my lancer. In either case, I dont get chainsawed very often =P

played some more multiplayer last night. it was absolutely awesome again.

i got grenade-tagged quite a bit in a few games though, which is a bit annoying, because as a noob i have no idea where the grenades are on each level yet. although it's absolutely HILARIOUS when someone grenade-tags you, and then you turn around and chainsaw them. your chainsaw goes down into their chest, and then BOOM... guts everywhere ;D

it's nice to finally see a 360 game which matches halo2's awesomeness online

lol (!=) made me laugh.

I agree and disagree, I'll call it a mini expansion cause it does add a faction that does have benefits.

It was cheap which made me happy.

GYYYAAAAARRRRGHHHHH.

HULK SMASH >:(>:(

On the campaign mode, act 2, I'm stuck at this one bit where I have to push a flaming car through the dark, while being shot by a Troika, a Sniper and a Boomer. They wouldnt be a problem, if the car would actually push. It pushes about 5ft, then gets stuck on a friggin invisible barrier. If I try and run to the light ahead of me, I get mashed up by the troika, various holes holes shot in me by the sniper, exploded by the boomer, and my remains eaten by the flying piranha things.

AGHHHHH. STUPID FRYAHAGHHHH CAR AGHH. DIEEEE!!!

Help? Someone? PLEASE!? I nearly just broke my controller, I was thiiiis close to throwing it at a wall.

It's the wrong bit. The car isnt supposed to get trapped on an invisible barrier. When I say a barrier I mean it just stops moving completely. Theres nothing even stopping it from moving. The game is bugged :/

Wow, guys. I just got called a newb by an American that cant even spell "You're".

So let me get this straight. I'm a newb for not being able to complete a level in a game?

Look, see the rules state "no flaming". Technically, calling me a newb, however childish this insult is; still counts as flaming, because it's provoking me to argue with you.

So wait a second, does this mean you're a newb at forums? Does your poor spelling mean that you're a newb at english? Does your antisociality and stupid behaviour mean you're a newb at life?
Title: Re: Gears of War

Loki: Stop with the insults, it's winding fallout up, you dont want to make him cry... do you? ;D

Fallout: In fairness... You are pretty newbish... To do the junker bit you just need to stop at every wave of kryll and take them all out before moving on. it's slower than it is on co-op, but quite manageable.

:P

EDIT: and just to clarify... calling someone a newb does not count as flaming in my eyes. it's a widely used term in gaming, and anyone who acts like a little girl when called a newb should probably think about what an arse they're making out of themselves :P

I managed it without co-op. The trick is to not fire until they're starting to pack and take them all out in one punch. When youre nearly through the city the option to book it if you have enough life left is available. It's a real pain. If youre still stuck here I'll co-op with you if you if you need.
