Title: Who Here Uses Winamp
Post by: Irrationalist on September 25, 2006, 09:10:36 pm
I am want to do 2 things

 1. Make a Masu AVS (I am well on the way to doing this, bout half done)
 2. Make a Masu Modern Skin (Have no idea how to do this)

Who here uses Winamp and would use these, and also is there anyone here that would help me do it.

I don't use AVSs generally, and I don't see much point using a modern skin when there's a good enough classic skin.. (less memory)

But don't let that stop you. :P

If you make a classic skin, people (like me) can use it in XMMS too (open source media player, "winamp clone").

Oh noes. I use foobar, but in linux I could use it if you make a classic skin. Classic skin is always better than the new modern shit ;)

I can't find the classic skin, plus AVS is one of my programming hobbies ;) but I don't know how to make Modern or Classic skins so. .... . . .. . ..

I use Winamp every now and then. Mostly when I do something else and listen music on background. When I play games or something else that takes memory and resources I use 1by1-player.

I've done couple of Winamp skins (classic) ones and it's pretty... hard job the way I do it. Of course you can use some software like Winamp skinner but they are mostly costly, not free. I did my skins this way:

I got somewhere the basic skin.

Then I modded all the buttons, numbers, backgrounds, sliders and everything else one piece on time.

It took quite a long time and lots of effort but it worked quite well. I tried skinner I mentioned above but they did not look as fine as that other method. I hope that this helped some...

I used Winamp until I get meself a Macintosh *cries*

I used to work with a guy who was part of the Nullsoft dev community. I could ask him how to do the things you've asked, but I'm back at university now. Pity :P

I already have a machinae skin...
I've had it so long it's like a natural part of my desktop, it wouldn't feel like home without it.

Title: Winamp classic skins
Post by: Bavi_H on September 27, 2006, 08:08:04 pm
Here's a link to Vortex's Machinae skin (classic style) for Winamp (http://www.fourtecks.com/machinae/stuff/machinae_winamp_skin2_v2.wsz).

Here's some info about making classic Winamp skins:

In general, making a classic-style Winamp skin involves hand-editing a lot of bitmap files. Every graphical element that Winamp uses is placed in a certain position in one of the skin's bitmap files. If you want to make your own classic skin, here's what to do to get started:

1. Download the Winamp 5 Classic Base Skin (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=189504) (from the Winamp.com forums).
2. Read Making Classic Skins (http://www.winamp.com/nsdn/winamp/skinning/classic/) (from Winamp.com's Development section).

You can also search for alternative explainations of all the little graphical elements. One I found was Winamp Skin Templates (http://www.alpha-ii.com/Info/Template.html), it was lacking in some parts but still very useful.

I wanna see a cool MaSu skin on my Winamp!

I don't know how these modern skins are made. I used to make my own skins for Winamp back when its latest version was something like v2.0. Made a couple of Maiden skins and some custom ones. They turned out pretty darn well, if I may say... Put them on the Winamps download site and there was something like over 300.000 downloads on couple of my skins.  :)

seriously. the only issue i've ever had with itunes that wasn't due to my computer being a spaz is that when i have nigh on 13 thousand songs it can take a while to get going. i honestly don't think there are substantial differences between it and winamp.

and ipods are similarly perfectly fine... especially since nobody else seems to think people need more than a gigabyte of storage.

lately, my winamp's "now playing" window has been getting frozen on a single song.
songs still play, and it still changes down on my task bar, but I have to restart winamp to get it switching again.

also: my clock-amp plug-in seems to disapear if I try dragging it anywhere else on the desktop.
weird?
yes.

but, do I still love winamp?
yesha yesha.

also also: anyone know of any other awesome plug-ins other than clock-amp?

MS isnt really evil, they're just way to big for their own good.

And i actualy agree with what Igg said about WMP, The interface SUCKS, the app itself is HUGE, it's a real memory hog, takes forever to start, the Playlist is extremely frustrating to work with, the EQ is just -WTF!- and it doesnt have ogg and flac support. The video portion isnt even worthy of the swears used to describe it, so i'm just gonna leave that.

The only nice things about it is that it has a nice CD ripping tool and some cool visualisations. That's it.

It literally takes less than a second for it to load on my computer. It uses roughly 17-20mb memory when i use it for long periods of time. I like the interface, its easy to find songs and search for them. Ogg support can be downloaded, as its not actually that popular a format yet. The playlist is dragging and dropping songs into the list pane, how hard is that :P

but hey, each to their own :)

QFT.  Some of the same reasons I love iTunes.

All of my friends use foobar2K.  Which is like, wow impressive for thirty seconds until you actually want to play a song.  Then you realize that it takes thirty seconds to find a song, and another thirty to add it to a playlist.  boo long load times for musical songs.  hooray beer!

iTunes can't support OGG and uses a bit more memory, but i love having my library managed so easily.  Plus, auto-embed album art ftw.

I've had severe distaste for Apple for a long time, namely because of their software practices. they've given us great hardware like USB and SCSI, but they use error codes instead of meaningful error messages, i've had to reboot without backing stuff up with a mac, they hadn't grasped double mouse buttons last i checked, they don't support many games, they're so picky on hardware specs that whatever fits their bill is more expensive than a PC counterpart, and they've supported DRM through iTunes.

that aside, Winamp is better than any other windows counterpart because it is so low on resources i can listen to music while i play CS, it supports global hotkeys while i play CS, any additional functionality still doesn't add much overhead and is easily found for free on their website, it's very customizable, very easy to use, and it's free. i've seen very few programs developed as intelligently as winamp and i would gladly buy a beer for any programmer who had a hand in it's development.

I wish I could have a cross-breed of Winamp and iTunes.

Winamp has global keyboard shortcuts for when I'm playing games, but iTunes has support for potentially huge libaries of music due to the quick search function, and the play stats, and easy id3v tag editing for multiple songs.
Winamp has Windowshade skins, iTunes is still pretty beefy when its minimized.
Winamp has equalizer controls, I dont beleive iTunes has.
iTunes has better iPod support (and other media devices are easily accessible also) compared to Winamp.

In short, I want iTunes that looks a bit like winamp with global shortcuts and without the Apple logo on it. Oh, and it has to be as customisable as Winamp, too. Plugins were fun.

the newest winamp will have an improved library and the ability to stream your mp3s anywhere you want (not just to fellow iTunes users). personally i don't own an ipod, but i don't see any reason to upgrade the firmware/software after i can update it with winamp. i know the plugin exists somewhere.

It seems a bit heavy.... (the new version, that is)

I like Winamp because it's so small, light and can tuck away in the corner where I can see it without having it cover all my other windows (see: itunes)

Winamp has stolen my heart again :)
One thing I do hate with the new skin, is that you can move the playlist, it is so shitty small O_o
You can only change size horizontal, can someone please tell how to(if possible) change size verticaly?
O, Now I know, but I dont like the library to be there? :P

I still use the good old classic winamp skin, I don't really need anything more than that.

a few bugs ive found;
-when using sexy vista window switch, it displays winamp as the oldschool compact design only
-when i delete music from the library, say, an entire artist or album, that album stays in the listing (regardless if its empty) until winamps restarted.

Gn.. new skin could be better, I'd like to be able to rearrange it to a more traditional lay out.

The new skin is pretty sexy actually, although I don't care much for the windowshade. It could be more like MMD3 - all windowshades should be like MMD3 infact :P

i like the new design, its the kinda thing ive wanted for a while. would be nice to be able to split parts of it like the older versions though.
