Title: Best political Machinae song
Post by: CrunchyLizard on September 14, 2006, 07:46:52 pm
I'm supposed to bring a song with political lyrics to school next Tuesday, so I'd like you guys to help me choose which one.

Which song has the best political message and/or is the best song of Legion of Stoopid and Seventeen?

I never really liked Legion that much, since it was way too straightforward. Not that seventeen isn't, but it rocks more and maybe gives a bit more room for interpretation.

I recall reading a post where a guy stated that a song on dxm, deus ex machinae or dreadnaught, might also be about American foreign policy.

Alot of Machinae songs seem politically influenced or at least, influenced by change which could EASILY be interpreted politically.

I would have to say while Seventeen is fantastic, don't rule out (for example) Rogue World Asylum. Or even Soundtrack to the Rebellion.

Honestly, if you're having to bring in a song thats "politically influenced" I'd go with Rogue World Asylum or Seventeen. I love Legion of the Stoopid, don't get me wrong, but both of those songs are more 'current' and broader.

Yes, but these two are the most obvious :P

tbh i'd go with rogue world asylum. it'd be nice to have something a bit more subtle, make your classmates actually think about the lyrics a bit.

You're right, that might be a good idea, but tbh RWA's lyrics are too subtle for me to figure out properly.

Omg, post 1700.

Just pick a song with no apparent political lyrics at all, e.g. Tempus Fugit, and write a 10 page essay that it is about a French-Belgian conflict in 1536.

O_o
o_O
o_o;

That is kinda not the point of it, but thanks for the idea anyway.
I'm just supposed to bring the song and 28 copies of the lyrics so we can talk about what the song is about.

in that case DEFINITELY do something more obscure... that way you can make up bullshit and nobody will know if you're right or not. you can't fail.

I could also just bring one song this Tuesday, another one Thursday, and yet another one next Tuesday. And just keep on doing it that way until we've been through all Machinae's songs. Yes, even the J'n'G OST :P

I don't think Rogue World Asylum is that subtle... It's talking about freedom one would think. I believe theres a whole topic on it, actually.

"She blooms like a flower
as she opens up and wallows in the light
but it looms like die mauer
as we search for what to follow in the night

and now they build another wall again

Come with me and you will see
our future in debris
first the sun and now the stars are fading
In a rogue world we are free
we have found the colored keys
but I know that we are still here waiting

waiting for her

She breathes death inside
as we keep trying to nurture her with lies
Now scorched her eyes are blind
Though given time she can recover if we try

but now they build another wall again"

Go with RWA. And it's not that subtle, really. At least there is a lot to get just by scratching the surface. For example:
and it looms like die mauer
...
And now they build another wall again

obviously this is about the Berlin wall, and how the Israeli are doing it all again with their cozy little wall. Easy peasy.

I personally think Follower is political too,
I do come from Germany and i like this song a lot,
because its telling me that i dont have to do what all the others do  ;D

Follower text:

Gag yourself and pay attention
Do as you're told,
what all the others do
Blindfold yourself and fall in
Don't question, don't think
Don't exist

The truth is too real for you
It fucks up the picture, right?
Don't wanna believe, don't wanna see
cause reality is the enemy

A setting born from
censored pictures on TV
A world constructed from
an R-Rated reality

It's so simple just to fall in line
Do as you're told,
what all the others do
Don't fix what's wrong,
just shine what's neat
Don't question, don't think
Don't even open your mouth

The truth is too ...

A setting born from
censored pictures on TV
A world constructed from
an R-Rated reality
Each story cut to fit
the screen and public eye
Transformed to fit inside
your fragile little mind

It's far too...

Unquestioned certainty,
a blinded faith in authority
and trust that will
keep you subjugated

It's far too...

I'd go for Legion of Stoopid. 17 and RWA are a bit shallow IMO; empires and walls can always be torn down. Legion (and a lot of other Machinae songs) goes a lot deeper; to be able to question and change, you must first be able to think for yourself. Don't let them turn you into Legion of Stoopid.

Also, you might want to consider a track that hasn't been mentioned so far; Rise.

I think Reanimator has mild flavors of political messages. Atleast I like to think about it, parts like
"never mind the cries
listen to the lies"
about how the media and the authorities feed us bullshit about how things went.
But anyways, I'd go with RWA, its awesome.

Just do what the teacher likes to get a good grade. Fight the machine!

I scored major points with my lesbian German teacher by stating that Kafka might have been gay.

All of those suggestions are good, but right now the choice is between LoS and 17 and not all those others like RWA.

I'm not sure I'd call Legion a "political" song at all, an "existential" maybe.

Then go for Seventeen, since it will rock your classmates' asses.

Legion has a slight problem of be relevent to a vote. It was in regards to not voting for bush, thus the lyrics "DONNNNT VOOOOOOOTE FOOOOOOOR BUSSSSHHHHHH!"

It was quite directed at an individual, I wouldn't use that song for the purpose you're seeking. Theres tons of songs that attack Bush, I don't think I'd call them political.

Yes, Legion of Stoopid is a GREAT song and still has points that are valid today, but it's defenitely written for a certain time. If you're stuck on doing LoS or Seventeen, I would most defenitely go with Seventeen personally. It's still very relevent to this time.

Edit: Oooo this was post 666 =P. How... evil

That is also what I'm considering most, since it is (imo) the best of the two songs.

It's also (slightly) less blatant, which makes you look better when you explain it.

INstead of "well, here, where they say 'don't vote for bush,' they're saying, uhm... not to vote for bush..."

Agreed on Seventeen. I actually did get some flak when I posted the lyrics on a board somewhere in a topic relating to the "War on Terrorism". I'm still waiting for the CD to hit the American public.

Redeemer? I don't want to seem pessimistic, but: -dream on.

The Retail edition is supposed to be sold in America so that's close enough.

it seems like every song has something that could count as political, and there are better bands for political lyrics you know ;)
