Title: english presentation
Post by: a sad cow on February 18, 2006, 01:20:30 am
i've got a project coming up in the next few monthes to present a song to the class. obviously i will take this opportunity to educate the masses. the question is, what one song would best bring a new listener to a new plane of thought? i know when i started listening, my favorite tracks were Earthbound and Hero. I didn't appreciate Nemesis or Masquerade until later. i'm tempted to use TTLG just because i like it so much, but i wonder how someone unfamiliar with the group would feel. i can talk a great deal about Nemesis (i believe i posted something a while ago), especially how i believe the instrumental ending is a final verse itself. the problem i forsee is the teacher cutting me off when he hears the last words on the lyrics i distribute. i also want to highlight the incredible strength of the instrumental portion of the band so i want a solid solo before the final lyrics. i'm wide open on this but i'm leaning towards TTLG, Hero, or Player One at this point.

You can't go far wrong with Soundtrack to the Rebellion IMO, and my opinion is the only one that counts for anything ;)

Something melodic, not too aggressive, and rhythmic. And a memorable chorus!

I'd go with Player One- it's by all accounts fucking awesome.

or Throttle and Mask... DO ALL OF THEM!

I did something like this in my English class not so long ago. Back then I chose Attack Music (because it's my most favourite song).

The Wired. Easy to explain the meaning behind it since it is about an anime. I used it for an essay that had to be about a song.

just go with YOUR favourite.

yeah, i see the indecisiveness. i was hoping for some analysis about instrumental solo versus depth of lyrics vs appeal to new listeners but i guess i'm on my own. the big thing is, my feelings about different songs are influenced by the machinae songs i've listened to before it. if i'd never heard machinae, i doubt i'd like the wired or masquerade because i wouldn't give them enough of a chance. now they're some of my favorite tracks. i really am leaning towards TTLG right now but i still worry about people i'd lose. imagine some of the more obscure masugn tracks, deciphering those lyrics. that would be way too dense for anyone not acquainted with the band to dig into. i still don't know what half of them mean.

I'd say Player One because it is fucking awesome!!
But of course, if you did play it to your class you'd be labelled, forever onward, an EMO.

Go by the winner of the ultimate song: Hero.

I just got someone hooked on Machinae with TTLG, so I don't think you'll have ANY problems whatsoever with that one.

Any Machinae song is fantastic though. Player One, Hero, TTLG, STTR, all excellent choices.

I don't think I was active during this "survivor" you speak of... i'm assuming it's just a way to determine the best Machinae Supremacy song?

i´d say winterstorm or TTLG (wich i will present for my music-class next week)

let me know how it goes. i just spent all day on 2 buses and a plane listening to everything i have and wound up at the same decision. do i go with the timeless classic or a kickass new track?

i'd be quite interested to know from a band member what tracks are most likely to hit the radio in the US first. as much as i love the internet, getting many of my friends to click for a song is too much effort when they already like the music they have.

AAH, I know.
I try to explain how easy it is to get the most amazing music in the world and they just brush it off like it was nothing... and the thing that REALLY bothers me is when they DO listen to it then say the only reason they don't like it much is either A) the vocals or B) that weird nintendo sound they're using.

we finally got the announcement of our song project and it's next class. the problem is, all he wants are lyrics. he's indicated a possibility of playing a portion of the song but he doesn't want to waste more than one class period by having everyone play a whole song. so now i'm left with scenario A) the most powerful lyrics i can find and B) TTLG or Winterstorm for overall power. since this is based on lyrics, i think i'll go with Blind Dog Pride.

Blind Dog or Winterstorn - They've both got interesting lyrics as they come from more than one perspective.

Winterstorm is pretty clear - a leader and an assasin

Leader: "As leader I remain aware as they all sleep... as I wander through the crowd, can't help but feel at home"
Assassin: "Predicting searching souless eyes, exit the dark... and as I hunt throughout the night"

Blind Dog is more subtle - I split it into 4 pieces for my musical: Leader and Enemy share the two main verses, a ninja who was forced to kill has the "I never turned away" bridge, Leader (the "good guy") has the "Courtesy of the Blind Dog Pride" bridge and a Traitor charachter has the "I know my fate is in my mind"

Would send you how I broke it down but I don't want to release the musical yet =)

Assassin: "Predicting searching souless eyes, exit the dark... and as I hunt throughout the night"

I actually interpreted that as a Hunter in the cold, dark, wintery night.

In the short time I got to know Machinae Supremacy ( 7 days now ), Winterstorm is one of the tracks which made my ears open wide - very nice lyrics and the sid-melody at the beginning ( and in refrains ) is catchy.

So, I would advise you to choose Winterstorm, too. Xander (http://forum.machinaesupremacy.com/index.php?action=profile;u=798) wrote a good explanation.

Never forget: you decide! ;)

That's quite possibly why, for me, it is such an awesome song.

i'm thinking now i'll have to go with Winterstorm not so much for the lyrics themselves, but for what the song means to me. the lyrics to blind dog pride are awesome, but Winterstorm is one i just keep coming back to. maybe it's just the solo...

ZOMG SUPERLIMINAL MESSAGING.

Shakespear = crappy

Romeo and Juliet, the real ending:

Romeo: OH NOEZ, SHE IS DEAD. I WILL BE EMO AND KILL MYSELF, FOR REALS THIS TIME.

Juliet: *Waking up*  So, you want some sex?

Romeo: I BLEED TO DEATH ON YOUR WORDS

Juliet: NOOEZ! I TOO WILL KILL MYSELF SO WE CAN HAVE GHOST SEX.

The coolest part about Shakespeare, if you think about it, was that he didn't even have the concept of "looking something up." There was no english dictionary worthy of mention until years after he died, so the stuff that he did write was all gleaned from a huge amount of reading. Like, we all take it for granted, but he likely had very little idea what an elephant was; certainly the others around him were clueless. So the fact that he pulled off so many thousands of references regarding history and foreign lands is amazing. Plus he really did have a way with words, and if you think it requires translating, well then learn your language better!

sometimes i piss myself off. i printed 20 copies of winterstorm, had a neat little spiel, i was even prepared to take over the projecter my teacher doesn't know how to use in order to better illustrate my points with the machinae website. maybe i shouldn't have insulted poetry so much, but he knew i was looking forward to this and he clipped everyone to a one minute - sitting. i wound up talking about the band more than the song, and when it came to examples i found myself using Ghost rather than Winterstorm. It's a very addicting song i find myself singing at the oddest times, but i never thought it would just pop out when i'm shooting from the hip. sigh. i don't suppose you could tell me how many people have visited the site for the first time from my subnet huh? i wonder if i had any shred of success. sigh. i've let you all down....

i just got a really wierd idea combining a whole bunch of philosophy ideas and conspiracy theories. i just finished the Truman show, i've been talking about star trek, and you probably saw my thread about the matrix. what if humanity has already brought itself to a communal state like star trek where there's a decent size faction devoted to entertainment? if most of society's basic tasks are automated and not everyone can be an explorer on a starship, entertainment would be the best way to kill time - exploring humanity. if you build a massive automated matrix, you could create any "show" you wanted. people could watch and analyze, and use this "show" to become more human. kind of like "the thirteenth floor". if all of this is true though, you don't necessarily have a "edge of the world" you can drive to - it could be like the infinite blackness of space. along this line, all the lightyears between us and any other galaxy would help discourage people trying to break out - especially our lack of space travel.

Think of the implications for porn....

I was always glad that the holodeck didn't actually exist. Remember that episode of TNG where what's-his-name played by Dwight Schulz gets all obsessed with the holodeck and doesn't want to leave? Yeah, that would be like half the population at least. Definitely me.

I'm sure if you also had the option to fly around on a starship exploring and getting into conflicts you may at least think of going outside the holodeck. I know I would.

Sucks what happened when the time came, but Ghost is a brilliant example, although there is a chance that the uneducated may misinterperate it as EMO.

As for the Trek thing... I'd much rather something like Avalon than a Holodeck, that or how the internet is in Ghost in the Shell, it was certainly interesting by the end of the second series.

Explanation of Avalon:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avalon_(Japanese_film)

...and if you don't know what Ghost in the Shell is... I'm sure that you all know how to download or rent movies, buying them is the next step, you know, with money.

since i can't download here, i download when i'm home. i've got a torrent and a kazaa file that should be done by time i get home in 2 weeks of Ghost in the Shell. I'm going to have to add Avalon to this list. Are there any other philosophical type anime's?
