Title: Get any good games for Christmas?
Post by: Turtle on December 25, 2005, 09:26:40 pm
If you celebrate it, that is.

But yeah. A couple cool DS games: Nintendogs and Trauma Center: Under the Knife.

And, possibly even cooler: L33T Tiles (http://www.leettiles.com/).

So yep. Good stuff. Anyone else have good luck with santa this year?

I got money for Christmas and I'm taking it boxing day shopping tomorrow morning. There's an 85% chance I'll be picking up a DS with Mario Kart. Other options are: an MP3 player, a new graphics card for my PC or saving it away for an airsoft gun.

I didn't get any, since I didn't want any. My brother got a DS though.

If you hit them up online before the end of the 27th you can get $30 off Age Of Empires 3, Civilization 4, and Need For Speed 9. Free shipping. They might have it in store but it will be a zoo.

Mario Kart DS and Kirby's Power Paintbrush. Power Paintbrush is stupidly fun, whilst playing I grin like an idiot :)

I just got back from buying a DS and Mario Kart but haven't opened it yet. My dad is seriously pissed off right now and claims I am addicted to video games. He's talking about removing all tvs, vcrs, computers, dvds, video games etc from the house for a year but I highly doubt he would go through with it. He'll probably cool down by later tonight and then I'll crack it open and have some fun.

I also picked up Xmen Legends for xbox and its pretty sweet.

CoD2, GTA: Liberty City Stories and BF2: Special Forces.

CoD2 is fucking amazing on veteran, a challenging game even for me, and I still havent touched on the multiplayer; Liberty City Stories' graphics are some of the most amazing handheld graphics I have bared witness to, and I havent got around to playing BF2: SF yet because EA sucks MAH BALLS, stupid automatic patch downgrader, I have to redownload v1.12 to play online -.-

Serves you right. Filthy game addict. Look at you sitting all day at home, playing those stupid games and posting in stupid forums. What a complete waste of time and money. Next thing you know, you'll grab a shotgun and shoot up your classmates. Junkie. What's next, becoming a top poster here? Your dad should have a serious talk with you about your addiction.

I bought FEAR last week as a little present for my excellent exam results (see http://forum.machinaesupremacy.com/index.php?topic=1851.0 (http://forum.machinaesupremacy.com/index.php?topic=1851.0)). Great game.  Though the much praised horror elements don't impress me at all so far (1), the gameplay is really great, especially with the AI and bullet time effects.

(1) Seriously, some lame cliché horror effects. The genuine weirdness of the Half Life 2 setting was creepier.

That's why most "horror" games aren't that great. They rely on clichés to help them scare people; it's the reason Doom 3 got boring after the first level.

Yes but I'm always late when it is about games because I don't play so much. :) On the other hand I can't afford new games because I'm so stingy bastard. :P

Doom 3 was only 'scary' because the guy you played as seems to only posses one goddamn hand, and can't hold a simple torch. Disliked Doom 3, didn't find it that great.

Imagine - Doom 3 with Quake 4 weapons. That would be perfect, as Doom needs HUGEBEEFY weapons that blow you 10m away every time you shoot them :D

The railgun in quake 2 was the weapons of weapons. It was the most sought after in multiple matches. The amount of damage that thing produced makes the BFG in quake 4 cream its pants.

So really, you just hate it cause your computer sucks  :P

Mario Kart for the DS is so uber its not even funny. I can't wait to get one of those USB wifi connectors to play online, hopefully I'll still be able to do it with dialup. What are everyone's favourite characters to use in the game? I prefer Luigi: great balance of speed, acceleration and handling.

Bowser isn't too bad in Mario Kart if you don't mind being hit around. As soon as you slipstream someone, they are pretty much gone, due to Bowser's insane weight. At the moment though, Drybone isn't too bad.

Yah I feel the same way. They're too busy trying to give you cheap scares that theres hardly any good/skillfull gameplay involved.

I'm playing Sniper Elite right now and its a pretty decent game. Worth taking a look at anyways if you're looking for a good 3rd person tacticalish game.

Doom 3 has too much imps, former humans and shotgun sergeants.
But the most annoying thing is all the narrow places, the entire game is a narrow place.

The other monsters and the big rooms are so few they don't even count as part of the game.
If I see a mod that has remakes of the original doom 1/2 maps I'd install Doom 3 again, but the original doom 3 really sucks.

I think I've seen one that does that. I'll look for you. My main tactic, when I play, is see them then camp a door. Then run out and Boom goes my shotgun.

My brother does something similar in Call of Duty, except with a sniper rifle. His excuse?

Fucking pathetic. Likely, it's the only reason why he refuses to play at any other genre other than FPS over the LAN.

One of my longest-standing pet peeves has been people who blame your "cheap" strategies for winning. What the fuck? If it works, then why the hell not? It's a war game. Only the retardenest of generals would send all their troops chaotically into some city, leaving the camp undefended. It's a good idea, it makes sense, and shut the fuck up, "IKillYou1988."

Also, shut the fuck up, Andrew from the youth center. Yes, I always play as Scorpion. Yes, i'm gonna fucking "Come 'ere!" you until it stops working. Learn to fucking block. Any decent fighting game gives you ways to counter everything thrown at you, if you're clever enough to try, instead of blaming me for your inability to press buttons right.

On topic, though... I got KOTOR and an Oblivion preorder. My mom didn't know, however, that I had already.. "borrowed" kotor and finished it like a 2$ whore, so it shall be returned and exchanged for Republic Commando. I don't expect great quality, but I'll take free games any day of the week. Except Lokiday.

Charging into a chaotically into a city and leaving the camp undefended is remarkably fun though.

Isn't the whole point of a game that it's fun, and not realistic in every way (unless of course it's a sim, but playing them competitivly doesn't really hold much allure), so charging blindly around shooting stuff is THE tactic to go for. If you kill a few whilst you're at it, even better.

However stupid some of my friends may be (not all of them are braindead) I'm pretty sure they'd be able to tell a needle from a pointed bit of plastic.

Not for Christmas but I grabbed Pariah as it was marked down to $20 CAD, KOTOR2, X3, Civiliation 4, and NFS9:MW.

Hrmmm. Well X3, voices don't work at all and it is basically unplayable even with the 1.3 patch still. Just loves to sound loop and crash the GPU. At least the evil copy protection didn't destroy my system, yet.

Civilization 4 is uhm, boring. I know I've never been hot on turn based anything but I don't remember the past ones being so dull. Hardly feels like I'm building much of a civilization, combat is incredibly lame. Blah blah blah.

NFS9:MW: Oh yay the exotics are back, at least most of them are. My preciouss diablo is gone though. Worst soundtrack ever. Entirely rap/metalcore other than three or so other songs, none of it even remotely fits racing. At least I can turn it off and play my music from NFS4/5. Ricing the cars is still all too present, but I am not forced to do it like the shitty underground series. Whoever mods a Lamborghini or Porsche needs to be hung by the feet. Controls seem really strange when using my PS2 controller via USB adaptor on my PC; the car drifts and turns after I stop. Why did they try and put a story in a racing game I will never know. Police are better than any of the past games, still stupid but now they have realistic road blocks and 'attack' in mass. Physics are completely nuts, hitting a car head on sends it flying, even if its a semi, and you keep going only with a little speed lost and you can pull a sharp turn at 200km/hr+ in the rain. And what really irks me: NO FUCKING WIDESCREEN SUPPORT! I can't even play in my native resolution and none of the hacks for widescreen can display a proper 16:10 resolution without chopping the top and bottom off. No sound other than mono/stereo either, what kind of game doesn't support 5.1?! Civilian cars have no damage, damage to player vehicles is very limited, only the cops seem to have lots of damage and doors/etc fly off like burnout 3.

I haven't got around to KOTOR2 or Pariah yet.

Aww, the faq says it's only the shareware part of ultimate doom.
The bastard making it cares about ID's rights. >_<

I'm pretty sure if a full mod was released it would definitely increase sales of Doom 3 as an engine.
