Title: Anybody recommend some music?
Post by: Vullcan on May 11, 2005, 09:41:51 pm
I'm looking for some new music to add to my collection, as im a pretty picky person when it comes to music, only liking very specific bands and not really genres as a whole.
A few months ago i got lucky on these forums and was directed to a few bands which i now love (Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Helloween, After Forever).
Anybody got any suggestions based on the above bands (and Machinae Supremacy of course)?

By the way, VERY nice choice on the forums. Ive been using SMF for a while now, and have gotten numerous of my hosted users to use SMF :)

Thanks

P.S. You should email all the old members telling them the forums are now back up...its been a long time so a lot may have stopped checking back so regularly.

Thanks a bunch for those links, found a few bands i really like there like Within Temptation and Stratovarius.

By the way, i really like female singers (suddenly started prefering them over male singers a few months ago), so some band suggestions that have a female singer would be great (like Nightwish, After Forever, Within Temptation etc).

Thanks

I strongly, strongly reccomend Devil Doll. It's one of the best bands out there. I'm afraid they don't have a female lead singer (though on one compositions, Dies Irae, they've hired in a woman to some vocals), but they're music is so great, that hardly matters.

Devil Doll play some sort of progressive metal, with a horror twist that can make it run cold down your spine (it is the only music I've heard that actually gave me symptoms of fear all by itself)). In one of their compositions (each of their albums consist of only one or two tracks*) they can go from classical-sounding music to metal. What truly makes it unique, though, is the haunting voice of Mr. Doctor, the founder and creative genius . His vocals, often sung in so-called Sprechstimme, range from authenticly children-sounding to Gollumish to just outright creepy.

My favourite albums from them are probably The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms and Dies Irae. If you actually want to buy it, you'll need to do it via the net, but it should be possible to download it to hear it out first. If you do so, however, make sure to get one in high quality (192kbits should be ok).

For some interesting trivia:
-Mr. Doctors real name is unknown. Not even the leader of the fanclub knows. And there are very few pictures of him, as he's very concerned about his privacy.
-After the band had recorded its first album, Mr. Doctor ordered exactly one copy of it, for himself. No other copies were made, not even for the other band members. The second album was first only printed in 500 copies. Approximately 200 of these were  given out (for free, I believe) at a concert. The remaining 300 copies were destroyed, as "everybody who was interested had already gotten a copy".

Another band you might want to check out is Vice Squad. Punk rock with a female vocalist (and a good one, too). If you don't want oldstyle punk, I reccomend that you start with Rich and Famous. This album got quite a lot of fairly different music on it. I particularly like the title track.

And a few more bands with female vocalists:
Human Waste Project (fancy music. They only made one album, though)
Kittie (nu-metalish stuff - my friends a fan of it, and it's quite allright)
LifeForce (the old band of some of the MaSu members, got to check it out - really cool. Bit hard to get unless somebody can post the link to a server where they're stashed. If nobody can, I can probably put them up somewhere)
INJA (once again, connected to MaSu. Think the vocalist is the girlfriend of one of the bandmembers)

Right, that should be quite a bit for you to chew through. Once again, do check out Devil Doll. Oh, and Misfits (the old albums. They might be a bit off from the music you seem to listen to, but they're still great).

*not entirely true. Dies Irae is split up in 18 tracks, but that's just for convenience.  It's still one piece

If you like female vocals:
Sinergy
Sirenia
Xandria
Within Temptation
Tristania
Lullacry
Leaves' Eyes (Good luck finding that, Atrocity + Ex singer for Theatre of Tragedy.)
Theatre of Tragedy (Before the latest two lame non-metal albums where the old singer has left.)
Edenbridge
Lacuna Coil
Nemesea

As for some of my favoutes you don't already listen to(I think):
Dark Tranquillity
Eternal Tears of Sorrow
Insomnium
Norther
Kovenant
Arch Enemy
...Lots and lots more. Recently I started to listen to Kotipelto and they seem really good.

Anything on my audioscrobbler (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/Ankle0000/) list or in my music directory (http://ankle.sinistrals.net/misc/music/) I can generally recommend.

Try Edenbridge.

As for Pain of Salvation, yeah, Be is quite different. But Imago is a fucking brilliant folk song with a subtle yet efficient progression from innocence to curiosity, to greed.

Also.. . For Symphonic Prog Metal, try Adagio.

For Prog Metal Musical Operas, try Ayreon.

I am going to suggest ....

Mercenary:  www.mercenary.dk .... one of the best new bands I have heard

Evergrey: If you like progressive music you could also like this. I recommend the album "recreation day"

Scar Symmetry: New swedish band , sound a little like soilwork did .... you can download their newest and only album at I think piratebay.org ... the album is called Symmetric in design!

Symphony X: I didn´t see anyone mentioning them. If you like progressive you will like this. One of the best guitar players in the world, Michael Romeo and just great band

Ayreon: this has been mentioned but how this band is able to stay so underground I don´t know. I recommend the album "universal migrator" it features both Bruce Dickinson and the singer and guitar player of symphony x Russel Allen and Michael Romeo

well ....  that´s all for now :D
just be sure not to suffocate in all this new music :D

Oh, good, i thought i was alone in my dislike of what is apparently the greatest all-star metal band in the WORRRRLD!

As for my suggestions...

I'm a fan of blind guardian and in flames, not opeth... definitely inja, children of bodom, and gwar even...

apocalyptica!!! always always apocalyptica, classically trained cellists playing metal etc., it's wonderful.

And i don't know why i even bother, because most of my music is ska/funk/reggae related.

Oh, tomas recommended Denver Harbor and i checked them out and they're pretty awesome if you can handle a bit of poppiness.

If you like Sonata, I'd highly recommend Stratovarius. They're very similar, but more progressive. Recommended first album: Infinite, website: www.stratovarius.com

Soilwork are also very good if you're into death metal. They use keyboards with sounds similar to that of C64 games (like Machinae), recommended album: Figure Number Five, website: www.soilwork.org

Oddly enough, I find Sonata Arctica's voice to be their weakest point. I was into Stratovarius a while back, but somehow, most of their albums have started to bore me.

Episode and Visions are the only two albums from them that still keep me going.

Grammar was Sonata's weakest point in the early albums, but they're over that now. In fact, the lyrics are great. High number of songs about relationship problems though, if they keep that up, their next album will be somewhat like Dido.

Timo Kotipeltos voice (stratovarius singer for those uneducated folk) does himself more justice in Kotipelto, much more justice.

Title: Re: Anybody recommend some music?
Post by: MDX on May 14, 2005, 12:03:20 pm
I think youre looking at the wrong ego baron, kotipelto is the non egotistically dominated version of stratovarius, they failed to include one of the lead guitarists from stratovarius in Kotipelto, simply because he ran stratovarius and dominated the writing of all songs, including drums vocals guitar etc etc but fair play, they made some awesome albums, i quite like elements Pt.1 and 2 aint too bad either, Stratovarius are awesome, but at times, very irritating.

I dont know if Kotipeltos voice was pushed more so in Strato than what he does in Kotipelto, because in Kotipelto they all work more as a team when it comes to writing. They all were quite content in doing that band, was a breath of fresh air so to speak.

but yes, Kotipelto is a good guy, hes not the one with the ego problem. : )

So he named a band after himself?  :o Talk about ego.

About as much ego as Glenn Danzig, former lead vocalist and founder of the Misfits and Samhain, and currently lead vocalist of Danzig. He rules, though, so he's allowed. Which reminds me, Danzig should also be checked out. It can probably best be described as a dark version of Misfits. "Mother" is the most well-known song, and it's a good one.

And Vullcan, you didn't like Devil Doll? This saddens me deeply...

Weird: yes, not like music: no (though it reminds more of classical music than a "song", in its buildup), depressing: no,  angry and sad: Not really, psycho: quite (it's horror-inspired, after all).

It is probably an aquired taste, though...

JPG is crap quality. I always use PNG which is completely lossless, or sometimes GIF if its needs to be smaller or is animated.
PNG isn't lossless. It is alot like GIF but with better compression, quality, transparency, alpha and no patent bullshit. (Which I think expired recently anyway.) Since I switched my sigs from gif/jpeg to png around half a year ago or more I've reduced the size and the bandwidth hit on my server significantly.

If you want lossless you can use bmp, tiff, raw and etc. I prefer tiff but it really hurts on my dialup.

I think youll find PNG 24 is lossless. Just google it and you get almost every site on the first page say its lossless.

Ah, I was refering to PNG-8. I wasn't aware 24 added anything other than the new transparency/alpha channels.

"PNG-24" would be RGB without alpha. RGB+alpha is "PNG-32"

There's also a "Gray mode" with and without alpha.

Well, a few extra suggestions:

Arcade Fire - Funeral. It's a small indie rock band that exploded into the Montreal scene and around in 2004. The melodic lines are catchy, the vibes are easy going and I just love it. Was drive down from up with family this week-end, and we all liked it. And... that... is... odd.

King Crimson - Wake of Poseidon: Yeah, so it's 34 years old. It doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Although quite similar in spirit to the first King Crimson album, this is full of pieces that should be classic. Devil's triangle is what Holst would have composed had rock instrumentation been around in his time.

Hanker - Snakes and Ladders: No nonesense power metal, great energy. Superb druming and the rythym guitar riffs are top tier. Sucks the mixing comes off as noisy at times. But I just love 'em, going to see them with Angra in September, but they're much better than Angra in my mind.

Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son: Come on, Number of the Beast is great and all, but too many people forget this frigging awesome piece of work. Adrian Smith's last shine with the band before the comeback in 2000, and the synth texture backs the music better than in any Maiden album.

Aigh, I hate The Arcade Fire. Conversely, I love King Crimson.

Nightwish
Generally I find their older stuff is much better then their newer stuff. Although their newer stuff is also quite good.
Stargazers - Fast, up beat
Dark Chest of Wonders
Pharoah Sails To Orion - One of their heaviest tracks, with added growling - not the fake stuff

Sonata Arctica
I found it very hard to get into this group although I'm finding them quite good. I recommend:
Tallulah
Wolf And Raven - Just for the solo
Sing In Silence - Very chilling/cryptic lyrics,

Symphony X
If you like power metal you'll like them, you can download a few from their site. I Find them to be very calming lyrics and music, somthing you can just kick back and listen to. Reminds me a bit like the sidology eps 1 and 3
Awakenings
The Accolade
Communion And the Oracle
