Title: Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Karva on December 12, 2004, 01:16:24 pm
http://www.audioscrobbler.com/
1. Go there, do an account (fast, takes like 10 secs).
2. Download a plugin for your mp3-player (Winamp, iTunes, XMMS etc..)
3. Join MachinaeSupremacy group.
4. Listen music

It logs all songs you play and uploads stats to your profile.

There's a definite[0 ] overlap between MaSu-lovin' and Nightwish and In Flames-lovin'

It might be worthwhile to do a little evangelizing on InF and NW-forums.

[0 ][1] Okay, maybe not "definite" -- seeing how I myself can bring a group to 14:th place in the "Top Artists" list for the MaSu SIG -- but "very probable"
[1] What manner of evil sorcery is this, that one cannot usee zero-based footnotes? :-\

Even so, there need to be at least 210 unique listeners for Machinae Supremacy to make it onto the Group-chart.

Its open source, no need to worry about spyware. You can even check the source yourself.

Installed it, uber. Must take #1 fan of Frank Klepacki.

Audioscrobbler is a really nifty service. I had the chance to talk with Richard who's one of the co-runners of the place while I was doing my masters in music-space (which I dropped out from) and he's a heck of a guy. They have a dedicated team and it's growing too. Once they Iron out the bugs that hound the website, it'll be kick-ass.

Also then it's just cool to run Last.fm radio once you have a decent profile and see what comes up. I've actually discovered a few new bands, like Lacuna Coil, since I started using the service.

And, ummm... In a way it is spyware, but why would I care that the whole word knows what I listen too, it's not like I have anything to hide.

Audioscrobbler ID: Layson.

Your giving it consent to track what you listen to. Spyware is software that gathers and reports information about a computer user without the user's knowledge or consent.

spys dont ask permission. spys gather whatever the fuck they like. audioflobbler asks. audiobabyeater only gathers track name.

I haven't updated to iTunes 4.7 yet. Maybe I'll get the same error...
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played

I had itunes 4.7 when i first installed iscrobbler, so that should not be the problem....
i even downloaded the iscrobbler installer a second time

i would look it up in their forum but i can't connect to the server
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played

audioscrobbler seems down, though my client can still update:

"INFO (foo_audioscrobbler) : Submitting cache...
INFO (foo_audioscrobbler) : Submission succeeded.
INFO (foo_audioscrobbler) : Submit interval set to 1 seconds."

I wouldn't panic. Just give them some time to fix whatever problem they're having.

I thought you said furry there, and that was looking at it twice.... fury is awesome, and some of the other songs are great,  but what happened for the intro to Insidious? sounded fairly disjointed IMO...

I'd sign up, but it would'nt be a clear message of my listening tastes. I use CD in my CD player usually and Winamp only when I ca'nt be bothered to get up and swap the CD. So Winamp only has a few randomly downloaded songs on that do'nt mean much to me.
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Bates on December 14, 2004, 09:55:06 pm
Yeah, that's a point. I'm mostly listening to music in my car or on a MP3-player. But the tracks I listen at home are still a good representation of my music taste, I guess.

Fury rocks!

Give a man a break! I was trying to get the crowd pumping and missed the beginning of the song. I fucked up, so to speak. I didn't think we were going to put it on the website.. else I would have been tied to my keyboards.  ;D

I'm slowly increasing the no. of Machinae songs played in the group, top 5 bands (it lost the 60 cached winamp files)

1    machinae supremacy    36
2    Him    13
3    Sonata Arctica    12
4    Iron Maiden    10
5    Cradle Of Filth    8

Dimmu at 6th. my favourite 6 bands, and that's just foobar picking randomly
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Bates on December 17, 2004, 10:14:14 pm
1 machinae supremacy 39
2 Sonata Arctica 22
3 System of a Down 21
4 Celesty 15
5 Dark Tranquillity 6

Hmm... SoaD is good but shouldn't be on third...
*plays some more Celesty*
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Elyl on December 17, 2004, 10:55:53 pm
1     machinae supremacy     120
2    Blind Guardian    102
3    Subway to Sally    69
4    Sonata Arctica    15
5    machinae supremacy & SounDemoN    1

Machinae supremacy &SounDemoN would be "kings of the scene"

It there are just these 5 artists because i have not yet  relisted all the music files my brother deplaced when he fucked up my Music library....

Mind you I have playlists in foobar and if I left my comp playing music all day it would be extremeley biased to the band who I have in that playlist

of course, we're trying to massivly increse the nmber of Machinae songs played therefore getting them noticed.... or so the idea goes :)

besides it requires pretty much no effort from us, download plugin, check audioscrobbler group/account once or twice a day, np :D
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Sariya on December 23, 2004, 06:14:31 pm
*thinks*

I can link the Machinae group to other artists/labels/countries - so I really should put in more. That could help get them noticed some more, albeit a small amount.

Although, when I tried to link to the label that Deus Ex Machinae was released on, it wouldn't let me.

Suggestions for things to add are very welcome :)
Title: Re:Audioscrobbler - Log your songs played
Post by: Smeagol on December 23, 2004, 07:50:51 pm
add every other country :P eg. look at the bands with links to sweden, it's got metallica, the pixies etc up there. which is WRONG. they've done it by where members are from, so may as well at least do that. also play about 200 more machinae songs and they'll overtake the pixies in the sweden list anyway, hahaha!

btw, does anyone know when the server prob at audioscrobbler is gonna be fixed?

well i found nothing specific on their forums....
but it seems they have this problem for a month or so...
though some list update at random occasions...
but its not yet fully fixed and i guess it may take a while till it is...

hmmm, that would explain why the network section thinks i have less than 100 songs played, when it's nearer 1000

Anyways, I added a few countries to the group, linked to SounDemoN and put a link to machinaesupremacy.com on the front page-thing. I also made a little machinae button [although it's not very good] and put it in my forum sig on Audioscrobbler.

It's a start I suppose :)

Yeah it's Frances the Mute, it's floating around on some p2p networks. It's pretty awesome, although it took quite a few listens to get into. It's 5 songs long, the average song is a hefty 13 minutes long and the last song is about 32 minutes long.

There's an option in the profile settings to auto-rename files to english i think.

I'm loving the last.fm thing, it's all I'm listening to at the moment... My trial has only 6 days left, then you have to donate money to use it; but it lets you donate as much or as little as you like, definitely worth it imo.

Oh yeah, btw: go to http://www.last.fm and sign in there with the same username and password, it seems to be less buggy than audioscrobbler for some reason (both sites work in conjunction with eachother so it displays the same stats).

EDIT 2: Also, on last.fm it seems that labels and/or bands can signup and advertise their music and upload their songs to be played. I'm not 100% sure on the details but if you're interested go to http://www.last.fm/labels/

Are you using the last.fm button or the personal one? the last.fm button is the one that picks songs similar to your tastes, and that remains free. the personal one plays the songs you or the person you click on actually has in their profile and costs.

I donated a couple of days ago, I'm still awaiting my blue + though :(

I used to listen to the radios quite a bit while at college, it really saved carrying around CDs and stopped me from going mad as I only had a 128mb mp3 player at the time.

There's a bug with the donations at the moment so you won't recieve your blue plus.

I posted my problem here: http://www.last.fm/forum/1205/_/17271

I guess I'm not in your profile because I don't have played many songs yet. You need at least 300 to get recommendations. I think you also need 300 to appear on neighbour lists.

my recommendations haven't updated for ages, but I'm sure they'll update sometime soon. I think Audioscrobbler are shifting data to another server again to try and speed up the list processing stuff :)

I'd donate but they don't have alot of the songs I listen to for streaming so the radio seems kinda pointless, not to mention I have 56k :P

I would like to code something to do stats on my website from their database, I imagine it can be done. I know they have a rdf for recent songs. They also have the source for the radio controls.

ah, nice. might try and get something by the top 3 bands it suggests (Dark Tranquility, Opeth and Iced Earth)
w00t for Dark Tranquillity. Best melodic death band, ever. \m/

There should be a message if there was an error... but if nothing is showing up then maybe it's just backlogged. they make a big deal about saying that everything is cached until it can be sent successfully, but sometimes the tags are weird or some such.

Their list generator is working again. All our stats should be updated by now. Smeagol moved down to place 36 in my neighbours list. Damnit! Come Back! Ankle disappeared completely... maybe I should give Frank Klepacki a try. Funny thing though, Elyl is now on number 2...

still no-one from the forums (i think) on my list :(

although for the Machinae group, i think one artist appearing there is solely down to Magicman

taking their place at no:12 in the list

Well. Ankle is there in 24th for my musical neighbors. No-one else I'd recognize... Except of course for the mighty Ivan fucking Dolvich! One of the best video game characters ever. I'm proud to have him as a neighbor.

On another note, I noticed that my tastes must be singular in a way. I see people with neighbours floating around 75 to 85% compatability.

I don't have anybody over 70% personally.

Yeah for uniqueness.

We plan to have everyones top lists up to date, and the list generator back up to full speed again by monday night. We made some changes today, and it'll take the weekend to re-generate the data in the new format.

We're expecting the new webserver and database server to arrive around wednesday of next week.

I used to use Exact Audio Copy to rip cds, it was great, I'd recommend it... but I can't get it to work since I installed SP2. CDex won't work either :(

I've had to resort to using winamp to rip, but it's turned out to be surprisingly good so far

I rather like the weekly artist/track charts on audioscrobbler, a very nice addition to the profile pages :)

I'm still waiting for my top artists/tracks to update since I've triggered if a few times since it was last updated.

The Machinae group has more members than the Bad Religion group too - I'm impressed :D

Not only are there more Finnish members in the Machinae group than there are Swedes (insert shameful emoticon here); INSERT INTO yabbse_messages (ID_MSG, ID_TOPIC, ID_MEMBER, subject, posterName, posterEmail, posterTime, posterIP, smiliesEnabled, modifiedTime, modifiedName, body, icon, attachmentSize, attachmentFilename) VALUES the amazing thing is that Machinae is placing quite well on the Finnish toplist! (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/place/Finland).

As of writing, the band's at number 21, doing better than such local celebrities as HiM (33) and The 69 Eyes (46).

Surely outdoing HiM is quite the feat?

(It doesn't seem to be because a "HIM" vs "H.I.M" spelling mismatch either, both map to the same statistics AFAICT)

Alot more hostility (iji soundtrack thread potat post) and violence (..every new thread) than there ever was before, must be the excitement of being back. Or maybe youre just all becoming violent people and general immature titheads.

Eitherway, get me a beer!

*checks fridge* oh woe, somethings amiss.

Not as if they matter. They're gonna overhaul the system (again) in a few years (yeah right, the current government wouldn't know the meaning of the word punctuality even if they read the wiki file on it)

That was so the last era.

lol at people who use WMP to play music, how annoying must it be??? I'd opt for Winamp (2.8 or something) before I use WMP to play music. !!!!

I use winamp, I couldn't live without it's global hotkeys
Control winamp from whatever program you're running regardless of what else you might be doing.. *such* a good idea

Yeah, Winamp as so many useful features, plus it's great for tagging mp3s, I'd never be able to use another player..

I prefer Foobar myself, haven't stopped using it ever since I started.

Mainly becuase it supported ogg, XM files, etcetra by default.

Finally, someone who sees sense!  Although I have been using Foobar recently as I've decided I'm trying to win all the Jedi Knight games in the next fortnight...starting with the 3rd.

*casts resurrect topic*

I found the php code that runs the ever popular Audioscrobbler signature picture thingies.. so if you put in the effort to host you own you can customize it!

The code's here. http://wiki.audioscrobbler.com/index.php/RecentlyPlayedImageV2

And I hosted it here.. but it was a real headache to set up so you might be better off finding somewhere better.
