I played for a couple of months a bit more than a year or so, but basically sent most of my time scamming money and not doing much else and then I just kind of stopped logging in.

I still love to hear about all the corp drama and cool heists people pull off, but probably won't reactivate my account until I've got way too much money or PLEX prices drop enough that I can afford my subscription with just scamming again.

EDIT: I know WereVolvo plays, convos with him on gtalk are like my #1 source for shit happening in EVE.

I have been known to play EVE, yes.

You still active WereVolvo?

I've been playing for 2 months now, so yeah, big gap between us I suppose.  :-*

And Caranfin, what exactly do you mean by scamming? You were scamming ISK's from other playes to buy your PLEX? (love the concept btw, buying gametime with in-game money)

Yep, all sorts of cons. I was planning to try a corp takeover about when I quit, but lost interest for some reason. EVE is pretty great for the amount of ways you can fuck other players over legally.

I'm still active, yeah. Been playing on and off since 2007. Mainly lowsec pvp/piracy etc.

Haha, fantastic.

And how were you planning on taking over a corp?  :o

@WereVolvo: What's your character name? Might pay you a visit.

I got a bunch of characters, including WereVolvo. Main character is Vaeline, though. If you decide to pop by, I have to warn you that my corpmates (including myself) can be a tad homicidal  ;)

And the fact you've been playing a tad longer probably also means you're flying a better ship.

Thanks for the hip.  ;D

My character is Willem Dante Van-Vugt.

By finding a really dumb corp. :P

But seriously, finding a good mark is the hardest part of any scam. After that for a corp theft it's apparently all about getting their trust (out of game knowledge should come in handy: make them a free forum or voice comms or something) and roles and waiting for a nice time to move so you can empty their wallets and hangars before they catch onto what's happening.

Hahaha. That actually sounds great.

I think it's funny how some corps build websites and demand everyone's on teamspeak and their forum... blurgh.  ???

On that character, it's usually sitting in stations and jump cloning around, lol. It's also my mission alt. On a good day, I can pull in about a billion in trades and 800m in missions. <3 Machariel.

Used to play – started in the beta and grew tired of it around the time castor was released (and missiles got nerfed something terrible). Sold my main character and moved on before being sucked in a few years later again when I decided to see how much ISK I could pull in playing for three ten minute periods a day on the market. Turns out making a few billion a day setting up orders is pretty easy. That lasted a couple months before I grew tired again and moved on. Tried the Dust 514 beta and man did that suck – great idea but PS3 only was the worst decision you could make for a MMOFPS. Awful graphics and performance, frustrating controls, tiny maps and most of the people who'd be interested in a EVE MMOFPS are PC players so it just seems like a terrible business move. That and they managed to make it feel more like a grind than EVE ever did which was a shame. Plus the only game I've encountered on a console in a long time causing hard locks requiring a reboot which really brought me back to the original Driver on PSX which would black screen seemingly every third mission or so once you left Florida.

So what's your strategy for making money on the market?

I'm constantly looking for ways to make more ISK's. Currently producing ships, but damnit all the assembly lines for time research are taken for the next 30 days...

I pretty much bought and sold ships exclusively – buy low and sell high. At the time tech 2 was new and very profitable. I would sometimes go into implants and the like but it was extremely volatile and pretty much required having a huge amount of capital to buy all the competing orders up and sell your stuff back at a high margin. Main thing was to have a high turn over rate and keep things liquid so you don't end up with a pile of assets sitting around.

Earlier before I had enough capital to just sit in jita and do that I would pickup ships cheaper around the surrounding regions using alts and then fly them back to jita but it was time consuming. I then replaced that with using a freighter to pickup the ships for a little while before strictly sitting in one spot.

Every now and then you will get to enjoy typo purchases where some poor guy adds a extra zero and gives you a billion+ for a cheap ship and then you can taunt them via eve mail for playing while drunk. ;)

What I always wanted to do was convoys to null sec to supply alliances and their wars with goodies but most are pretty self sufficient and its extremely difficult to get enough well equipped players together to organize the trade run and have escorts. Also expensive if you have to hire out for the escorts.

Good strategy. I have been thinking about buying and selling as well. Main thing is at this point I have little capital (44mil, but got some T1 weapon orders from the Alliance), and I'm afraid I'll end up with a bunch of assets, as you already pointed out.

What's the catch, what should I look for?

I've never liked an online game as long as I did EVE, this is one here to stay.  ;D

Never done market trading myself but I hear it can get tedious as all hell. Basically you're up against a whole bunch of people and/or market bots that have no compunction about watching the sell orders like hawks and undercutting your sell price by 0.1 isk just to stay on top.

Pretty much exactly how it works. The upside is there is so much activity you usually get orders filled anyway. It is definitely not the fun way to play but it is the easiest way to bring in ISK with relatively little risk or commitment.

When you start to make ISK faster than you can use it up placing orders things get far more interesting though. You can invest in corporations and funds which are high risk and sometimes scams but the returns are much better. Or you can be a dick and buy up everything in a region or multiple regions and sell it back much higher and just keep snapping up every order that undercuts you – pretty hard to do without organizing a lot of other people with deep pockets though. If you are willing to extend a little trust, generally in short supply in EVE, you can fund other players to trade in regions beyond your reach in exchange for interest on the loan, a share of their profits, or shares in corporations. I had a few people I setup in other hubs when I was playing but never found anyone that could stomach long term day trading.

Good strategy. I have been thinking about buying and selling as well. Main thing is at this point I have little capital (44mil, but got some T1 weapon orders from the Alliance), and I'm afraid I'll end up with a bunch of assets, as you already pointed out.

I've never liked an online game as long as I did EVE, this is one here to stay.  ;D

I started day trading with around 10m – you just have to be careful not to over extend yourself early on or you run out of liquid capital to invest while waiting around to clear things out. The hardest part is when a market bottoms out and you have to decide on whether you want to take a hit and sell at a loss to keep things liquid or if you'd rather hold onto the assets to sell after it recovers. After 10b I find I don't really care anymore and will just keep things moving constantly and all the other profits offset any short term loss.

If you want to keep EVE enjoyable I'd recommend setting up an alt on your account or running a 2nd account to handle day trading. Otherwise you are pretty much stuck in a hub at a single station with no where to go least you interrupt your ability to place orders efficiently. You also have the time sink of leveling all the market related skills – prioritize the ones that increase your buy/sell order limits and then make sure to put enough levels into the ones that allow you to place orders remotely. Its better to do this with a 2nd account unless you can stand a month or more of not training your other character for pew pew.

Damn it, this game is intense.

On one side I LOVE to play serious, mature games, but on the other side I don't want to spend HOURS A DAY in EVE. Mining bores me pretty quickly, but I need the materials for creating the ships that I'm selling. Mainly Cataysts now.

Will give a trading a hand, but afraid I'll lose money.

EVE is too scary!

What do you guys think of my skillset? Currently training towards the Exhumer (already bought the ship and skill book). Also like to do some hauling sometimes, but the contracts are kinda shitty. First considered a combat role, flying a Myrmidon BC now.

...

I've only ever flown Caldari ships for the aesthetics myself. That and the completely rigged antimatter before they finished the range based fall off and implemented tracking that actually takes into account ship speed and signature ...and the OP missiles before they nerfed them in Castor and restricted missile sizes to ship classes. I miss rocking cruise missiles and torpedoes on my Caracals in our wolf packs. Damage output of a raven in a cheaper, smaller, faster form factor that was very expendable.

Pretty standard starting stuff. I'd advise you against spreading your skills too much in the beginning. Focus on either combat, trade or mining - if you alternate between all three you'll just end up being mediocre at everything for a longer while ( I know this from personal experience).

If you're going to be spending much time in combat ships, I'd spend some time getting most of the basic fitting skills (engineering, electronics, weapon upgrades etc.) to 5, as it gives you a hell of a lot more flexibility when experimenting with ship loadouts. I know they're boring as hell to train because they don't immediately reward you with new classes of ships/weapons/etc. to use, and they can take a while to sort out properly, but be patient and stick with it. Better to learn to fly one or two ship types well than immediately jumping to the next tier every time you get something new and sucking at it the whole time.

Oh, and don't neglect the ship skills themselves - the tank/damage/cap/whatever bonus you get per level can make all the difference in the long run - I personally try to get it to at least 3, preferrably 4 before I even think of flying the ship.

A bit of a rambling post, but it's what I could think of here and now.

Thanks for the advice, dude. I've noticed that spreading my skill set is not very good.

For the moment, I'm focusing on mining and refining. I'm currently saving some ISK so I'm in fact training for some combat things. Guess that's the way I like it... to fly the big ships. Using EVEMON to plan my skill training and damn... 100 days for a command cruiser. Blergh.  :o

Don't fly it if you can't afford to replace it and the fittings 10x or more. ;)

My preference was 100x but I had to keep capital around for trading.

Most of the time now, I fly around in an industrial or a freighter. I can replace either 20 times over and remake the ISK within the next week. It's good advice... Build some capital; then trade, or in my case, manufacture :) If you're mining, perhaps we could work out some sort of a deal? :P

For a certain definition of "active" lol.
Half the time, I'm sitting in Jita trolling chat or scamming people. Jita 4-4... Such a wretched hive of scum and villainy, and I love it <3
I think I added you sometime ago, not sure, lol.

Ah, yes, indeed,

Well if that's all you're doing, I hope you can buy your PLEX in-game.  :P
