I usually post things on here about news items and what's going on in the UK, mainly because I like to know what's going on in the world around me.
So instead of making new topics and clogging shit up I'll make this the MASTER NEWS OF THE STUFF THAT GOES ON.
I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could post stuff on what's happening in their countries at the moment too, and yes, comments are allowed ;p
To kick things off:
England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 football tournament could cost the economy as much as £2bn.
England's kit manufacturer Umbro, and the retailer Sports Direct both issued statements warning of the impact of the team's loss to Croatia on Wednesday.
The defeat may also have a wider impact on the economy, with pubs, travel firms and bookmakers all set to be hit.
"A successful run to the 2008 final would have led to a £2bn bonanza for the economy," said Simon Chadwick, professor of sport business strategy and marketing at Coventry Business School.
Sucks, our economy could do with some extra cash (when could it not?) but at least now I dont have to endure listening to everyone in the office talk about it constantly.
EDIT: Maybe this should go in Media Discussion?
This one I thought was pretty cool :D
British scientists have stumbled across a fossilized claw, part of an ancient sea scorpion, that is of such large proportion it would make the entire creature the biggest bug ever.
How big? Bigger than you, and at 8 feet long as big as some Smart cars.
That would have made Ancient Rome gladiator fighting more interesting ;o

I work at a news station, as cameraguy and editor..
someone someone who lost the game IRL.
A woman from Florida made a pancake and to her suprise she found what she believed a image of jezus and maria.
She regards is as a sign from above in relating to the death of her father and that it will cure her disease. (parkinson)
So she puts it on Ebay, thinking that with the money she can get the needed medical support for her disease.
A woman in a drunk mood bought the pancake for $29, and gave it to her husband as a present.

It amuses me that, in English football, if a big team is not winning 90% of the time then the first one on the chopping block is the coach.

When signing the employment contract he is fully aware he will be blamed for the team's performance.
-
In other news, Poland - an average football team, made it way into the finals. Group A, first place. Portugal was second.
-
I blame global warming.

This sounds like the normal practice here in Norway as well.

So that's why Beckham always cries?
Rugby over football any day tbh.
A lot of people have started to look towards other sports now, could this mark the decline in football's popularity and maybe even possiby its huge franchise in England?
dun dun dunnnn

Last night the council of a minor football league banned supporters for coming to outside matches, to prevent riots and disturbances.
The mayor of Helmond (a small village next to Eindhoven, wich is where i live), found pig's heads in front of his porch with a sign stating their displease with the decision.
I will be heading over there in a minute and try to get a response out of him in front of the camera.
-
Wow good luck dude! Grab the pig's head too :D
Expensive and time-consuming work in laboratories around the world has rendered many cancers treatable, bringing added years, even decades, for countless patients and their families.
So it comes as a shock to learn that millions of pounds in charitable donations and from taxpayers are being wasted on "worthless" research for lack of good housekeeping practice in the lab.
BBC File On 4 has discovered that many scientists fail to carry out simple and inexpensive checks to ensure that they are working with the right experimental materials - particular forms of human cancer cells.
As a result, thousands of studies are invalid.
Stupid really, wouldn't mind my money back either, I don't pay tax for careless mistakes to happen ;/

thousands of students are trashing the place and rioting 50 metres away from where i am, due to a strike gone bad.

Today, again, riots in every major city of the netherlands, i was up close today, almost getting bottles and eggs thrown at me, so i decided to stand behind the mob instead of front of it. I was close to the police because i was with a film crew.
around 25-30 people got arrested, there were several illigal fireworks bombs, and there was a lot of damage. :D
-
What is it with Holland these days? Riots upon riots.
Or is this standard behaviour down there?

Broadband industry leaders are to meet ministers to discuss how to stop the UK dropping into the internet "slow lane".
More than half of all UK homes now have a broadband connection, at an average speed of four megabits a second (Mbps).
But the broadband summit will hear other countries are moving more quickly to build ultra-fast networks that can deliver speeds of as much as 100 Mbps.
BT - Britain's biggest broadband provider - has already warned that it may struggle to pay for an ultra-fast network.
But cable company Virgin says it will deliver 50 Mbps broadband by the end of next year - more than twice the maximum speed it currently offers.
Virgin's 50 Mbps service will be available to more than 70% of the 12.5m homes its cable network covers by the end of 2008, the firm said.
Glad I switched to Virgin now :) Very much hoping I'm within the 70% and maybe even free upgrades for those already using the max speed they can offer (as this is what I have ;p)
Any other of the Brits on Virgin, or BT?
-
our area can't get cable yet, and chances are we'll be last to receive it. much like the digital switchover which hits my town in 2012. :(
-
That really sucks, you'll probably be out of there by then anyway, if you aren't... enjoy watching all your streets being dug up and builders replacing the copper wires :(
On a related note:
British engineers have been asked to build the payload for what will become one of the biggest commercial telecoms satellites ever launched.
The six-tonne satellite will deliver high-bandwidth services, such as mobile internet, to Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
The spacecraft allow people to set up virtual offices anywhere around the world - on land or at sea. Users get half-a-megabit connections through small, laptop-sized terminals. Customers include business travellers, disaster relief workers, journalists, and people in the petrochemical and maritime industries.
Would be pretty awesome, especially for relief workers for getting wired more funds or something when in 3rd world countries. Which brings me to the next piece of news...
The so-called $100 laptop project is working to boost education for children in the developing world.
The rugged, energy efficient laptops have been designed to be used in remote and environmentally challenging areas.
They are currently being tested around the world, including at the LEA primary school, Galadima, on the outskirts of Abuja, Nigeria.
Using statistics from the year 2000:
Population of Africa = 795,671,000 people
42.6% of which are children aged 15 and under
that means there are 18,677,723 children younger than 15 in Africa (couldn't get figures for 15-18 year olds).
So it would cost an estimated total of $79,567,100,000 to give every child a $100 laptop in Africa.
I wouldn't be suprised if the government saved money by giving dead children's laptops to live ones.
What ever happened to trying to get Africa some economic stability? Fire came before electricity (that was a metaphor ;/).

anyways, random headline from one of norway's biggest news portals: " - This doctor secretly photographed naked patients"

Sort-of headlines:
-A middle-aged dude took people hostage in a Hillary Clinton campaign headquarters in New Hampshire, but everything was resolved peacefully.
-A massive snowstorm is headed into the Northeast. Hopefully going to cancel classes. :P

Some local news that has caused nationwide debate :
- One municipal councilman, working as vice member on social- and healthcare board was doing some Christmas cleaning. He got tons of documents in his apartment and he wanted to clean them up bit. So what did he do? He took massive amount of public documents and lists and recycled them like any good citizen would have done. Only problem was that among those public documents were, by mistake, some records about supplementary benefit processes of certain individuals, records of custody processes of certain children, some highly confidential medical reports of certain individuals and so on. All of those were highly confidential. Apparently someone was doing some dug up among recycled papers as these documents were found and sent to local newspaper that made news about it (not about actual records but how they got lost). This is very serious mistake and not surprisingly quite a big news in Finland right now. Police is investigating matter.
- One salesman of Saunalahti (Finnish ISP and mobilephone operator) lost some of his records about clients to the recycle bin of paper. Apparently keeping such printed records about customers was against company policy but the fact is that such records did exist and they got lost. No one knows yet how much such records were lost and how many of them are still missing as only some of the papers were found from the ground near the recycle bin. These records contained logins and passwords of clients, mobile phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers and so on. Pretty hard stuff. This is not only big news locally but as nationwide too. But even bigger news this is to me since if I'm unlucky enough some of my information might be among those records as well. Crap.
So... "Kuopio - protecting your privacy" could be our city's new motto.

Sooo... time to dust off this thread again, methinks.
Recently, the norwegian police managed to identify and apprehend the so-called "Pocket Man", a notorious paedophile sex offender so named for his peculiar methods.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7184073.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7184073.stm)
I don't know what to say, really. If the numbers are correct (anywhere from 150 to 400 assaults), he's the worst child-molesting monster ever to emerge from whatever depraved pool that spawned him. I'm not a fan of capital and/or cruel and unusual punishment, like most Norwegians, but that's one person I think people would quite happily castrate with a blunt knife given the opportunity.
-
Sex offenders in general are almost always mentally ill in some way, so if you think sick people deserve to be castrated with a blunt knife then that's your call.

I don't think people over here care about that right now. You've got a point, certainly, but I can almost imagine the lynching mobs rampaging through the streets demanding his blood :P
He's gonna have one hell of a time in prison, to put it that way.

Well he should probably really be going to a maximum security psychiatric ward. And it's partly peoples attitudes to people like that that make them so difficult to treat.
-
Also, they have the chance of being murdered by the other inmates.
-
everyone who goes to prison has a chance of getting murdered by other in mates
-
Yes, but sex offenders are often chosen as victims by the other inmates who are there for "normal" crimes.

Christ. You'd think people would be better prepared than this stupid couple. ::) You don't go travelling out there without a fuckload of water with you, and after getting your car checked. Jesus fucking Christ. Idiots. Now, in true Australian spirit, I bet the government will ban anyone going into the outback. Hurrrrrrr.
A MARRIED couple who died in the Central Australian outback used the last of their water on a leaking car radiator, the sole survivor of the tragedy has told police.
The elderly man was found last night wandering alongside a remote road about 100km from Nyrippi, west of Alice Springs.
A ground search had been mounted to find the man and his two companions after a report was made to police about 9pm (CST) on Sunday that an overdue party was missing after setting off from the Aboriginal community of Kintore.
The man, believed to be aged between 60 and 70, told police that the Pajero station wagon they had been travelling in broke down 116km from Nyirripi two days earlier.
The group then ran out of water after using it to fill up a leaking radiator, he said.
Last night police found the car a few kilometres further along the road but there was no sign of the couple.
Lights and sirens were used to try to attract the missing pair as the search team slowly travelled back to the community, leaving water bottles along the way.
Police said they resumed their search at first light today and eventually came across the 31-year-old woman, barely alive, by the side of the road.
Her tracks led to the body of her 34-year-old husband who had died about 90 metres from a dry waterhole.
The woman was taken to the Nyrippi Health Clinic where she was pronounced dead at 11.30am (CST) today.
Detectives were preparing a report for the coroner and a post mortem examination on the couple will be conducted in Alice Springs tomorrow.

I don't think they care anymore at that point. :P After all, lack of reasoning is probably what landed them in prison in the first place...
-
I once saw a documentary of prison habits regarding 'numbers' wich meant the lowest are .. well, fucked.

Heath Ledger died of a drug overdose in New York today. If you don't know who he is, he's the guy playing the Joker in the latest Batman movie (which is in post-production, so it's unaffected). Sucks, because he was a promising actor.

Heard about that, didn't realise it was an over dose though.
MODERATION PEOPLE (what? was I going to condole the use of drugs or something?)

"Moderation" is a word unbeknownst to a majority of celebrities nowadays, unfortunately :(

I read today that Heath actually didn't die of an overdose, but no one seems sure.

Yeah, now I'm hearing that he died of natural causes. But then what about the sleeping pills? Who knows.

honestly. ive seen facebook groups and shit about mourning this guys death. people closer to us die every single day, yet people would rather pay fake respects to a man they don't even know. golly gosh, he starred in a few films. whoop?

Because people are interested in random, mysterious deaths? It's not like everyone in the world is sobbing over it, most people just think it's strange that such a good actor (and apparently wholesome person) just... died. For no apparent reason. On top of that, it's not just an obituary, it's a news story. So it's pretty damn hard to get it out of mind. Is it that hard to imagine people liking a person for giving them entertainment? What if, say, Trent Reznor died?
Who says they're fake respects, anyways?

what you say is a valid point, but far from the truth due to the fact i heard a 13 year old girl going "OH MA GAWD HEATH LEDGERS DEAD I LOVED HIM SO MUCH" earlier today.
and you said it yourself, APPARANTLY wholesome. do we know who he is? i sure dont. and im sure the billion other people posting myspace bulletins about him dont, either.
i simply think that people need to sort out their priorities. thats all.

Well... that's the thing. Apparently wholesome. It confuses people that someone believed to be a plain old good actor and not a media-hyper would die from drugs, so they wanna see what's up. And I'm sure there's lots of shows out there looking for some amazing "HEATH LEDGER, DRUGGIE" story, being how the media thrives on that shit.
And it's not so far from the truth. :P Do you see everyone on the bus sobbing, too? Those 13 year olds are the minority.

Dutch Crime Reporter blows case Nathalee Holloway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natalee_Holloway) wide open with secret camera survaillance.
On January 31, 2008 Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries alleged that he had solved the Holloway case. De Vries stated that he would "tell all" on a special television program on Dutch TV on February 3.
Beth Twitty's attorney, John Q. Kelly, told ABC News that he has little faith that the supposed evidence will prove pivotal to the case and suggested that it will be quickly debunked.
On February 1, the Dutch media reported that Joran van der Sloot made a "confession" regarding the disappearance of Natalee Holloway as stated by the District Attorney's Office of Aruba. Later that day, Van der Sloot stated that he was secretly taped by someone, but that he was telling the individual what he wanted to hear, and that he had no role in her disappearance.
On February 1, 2008, the Aruba prosecutor's office announced the reopening of the case.
The broadcast aired February 3, 2008. In it, Van der Sloot was seen smoking marijuana, and stating that he was with Holloway when she became unresponsive. He stated that he attempted to revive her, without success. He said that he called a friend, who told Joran to go home and who disposed of the body. An individual reputed to be this friend, identified in the broadcast as Daury, has subsequently denied Van der Sloot's account, indicating that he was then in Rotterdam at school. The Aruban prosecutor's office attempted to obtain an arrest warrant for Van der Sloot based on the tapes, but this was denied by the examining judge.
Beth Twitty, adhering to the position that the tapes represent the way events actually transpired, told the New York Post that she believes Natalee might still be alive if Van der Sloot had called for help. She contends that Van der Sloot "dumped" Natalee's body (which, according to Twitty, may still have been alive) into the Caribbean.
