Title: Polyrythms!
Post by: Jack Lupino on June 07, 2009, 03:35:39 am
Hello fellow bored high school students & aspiring musicians

I recently started getting a bit more into polyrythms and off-beat sequences, now i wanted to know if someone here has experience in that kind of thing and what's the best way to go about it, writing and training-wise.

You're going the right way man! :D
Meshuggah and Textures have been the best influence for me in all dem polyrhythm stuffs so you should check them out. Can't really give any tips for traning or writing though :<

Found an interesting video though:

Well yeah, didn't i introduce you to Textures, nich?
And meshuggah has always been one of the pioneers of technical metal stuff.

And Periphery reference +1

Negative! I've known them since their first album came out in 2004. You should also check out bands like Gojira, Tandjent, Xerath and Animals As Leaders (which btw has some of the most amazing guitarwork ever).

The very first Dillinger Escape Plan album (Calculating Infinity) is very technical math metal. They're not like that now, of course, because none of those original members are even in the band anymore.

Well they still do have some awesomely insane technical math stuffs, but yeah its not quite as awesome as it used to be. Nowdays they have alot of radio hit pop songs, but they're usually very, very, very cool too (e.g. Black Bubblegum).

Yeah, I still like them. I think that Milk Lizard song is cool. It reminds me of the old Adam West Batman theme.

A few years practice will do it.
Seriously, polyrythms are hard. Depending on what instrument you're going for, you might want to try different things.
But I'd suggest just try drumming in polyrythms in your down time. Like, just tapping with your hands on your desk (at school) or just anywhere is practice.
If its for drums, also try tapping with your feet, because you'll be doing that a lot, while guitar will mostly be tapping.

Ya i guess that would do the trick but i'm always concerned with the melody more than the rhythm, i should definitely try to change that in a couple of songs :]
