Title: I did it!
Post by: Rareitor on December 01, 2010, 09:05:36 pm
This topic will be about stuff that you have accomplished after a lot of hard work, with an added bonus of freaking out in happiness when you accomplished it, maybe.

I'll start with what I finished today:

I described, after quite a few redos and tweaks, two 99:59 mm:ss clocks that can be exchanged (one pauses, the other works) with a pulse switch, all in VHDL.
Then I made it work.
Then I jizzed.

GO!

Hehe, theres not many things that beats the feeling of accomplishment when your circuits do their job  ;D

I've just started using VHDL myself, and had some trouble to adapt to a language where everything happens in parallel, because the only programming language I have used earlier are sequential. So my circuits did all kinds of funny things.

But it sure is faster than programming everything at gate-level once you get the hang of it. :P

Finally - after successfully passing the engineering exam in December, I finished designing an ECG analysis software, capable of filtering the signal (removing baseline wandering and wideband noises), detecting QRS complexes (with over 92% accuracy, which will be quite easy to improve even more in future) and, based on this detection, arrhythmias (including brady- and tachycardias and bundle branch blocks, the latter being something hardly any other software detects right now).
The software reads files with acquired ECG signal (like the ones generated by Holter monitor), computes heart rate and, despite still proving many failures (especially while analysing very noisy signals) will probably be developed further to correct all the errors and work in real time during the very acquisition of ECG signal from the patient.
Apparently it was awesome enough for the board of examiners to award me with my first degree ever - that is, engineer's degree.

LMFAO WHAT, there was no love triangle! Maybe in the very early stages, before there were actually any relationships, but it was mostly just me being a whore and Shaun being... Shaun. Ant started coming on here less when he was staying in America with me. We broke up a little bit after, NOTHING to do with Shaun or any love triangles of the sort on either end, and then he was coming on here again for a bit, but now, as Caranfin said, he's been extremely busy with school. Fantastically busy. (He works really hard! :D) He comes on maybe once a month, and he is usually playing games when he does. We usually talk when he gets on, so I'll let him know he's being missed on here!

My accomplishment: I got more than 6 hours of sleep for the first time in 3 weeks :B and a future accomplishment: I will have finished a giraffe made out of cardboard I've been working on for 50hrs+ in the past two weeks.

This topic will be about stuff that you have accomplished after a lot of hard work, with an added bonus of freaking out in happiness when you accomplished it, maybe.
See, this is why I can't have nice things. First off, I hate working hard. Secondly, I do believe that the process itself of achieving something is more enjoyable than the accomplishment of a task.

But do not listen to me. I am a wannabe NEET, apparently, as I hardly work at all, and am not quite right in the head.

On-topic:
I am not exactly accomplishing anything, but I am in the process of building this potentially ginormous earth shrine/research complex in Minecraft. I think I've read about WereVolvo's single player world in which he built a giant lava tower. Apparently, lava towers are one of the most popular things people come up with when they start thinking about constructing awesome stuff in the game. Cause the first thing I built after setting up a home cave, was a large vertical shaft with a staircase leading to the bottom of the Minecraft world. Then, I extended the staircase by erecting a tower till the very top of the world. It was made of glass, so I hollowed the massive supporting pillar in the middle and poured some lava in.

The only twist to my generic lava tower is, I made an observation area upon the top. And I accidentally shaped it so that now I have a giant, long, thin, glowing glass pen0r sticking out of the ground, with a helix staircase running inside of it

Then, I leveled an enormous hill with the planned rooftop level of my base. It took me about 7 hours and yielded tons of materials like sand, sandstone, cobble... Used up tens of shovels and mining picks for that operation.

After that, I built a great antechamber of my future research facility/earth shrine around the pillar inside the leveled hill, completely absorbing my former base cave in the process. I set up an indoor coppice/tree farm with a lookout area and a storage room, then built another hall/room which I am not completely sure what to do with. At the moment, I am busy exploring the sprawling cave system beneath the hill. It is ridiculously large, reaching from the bedrock layer (the bottom of the world) to the sea level and I must have used over 300 torches to light it up already. And I am not even donem there are still branches I haven't explored.

Then, I guess I will mine whatever valuables await inside. Cause so far I haven't touched most of the gold/coal/iron/redstone/lapis lazuli veins.

Nothing cool going on in real life at the moment.

EDIT:
OH YEAH I forgot I've actually done something recently: beaten Kaguya Houraisan's "Impossible Request - Dragon's Necklace (Normal)" spell card in Touhou 08 Eiyashou - Imperishable Night (translation from moonspeak: did something beyond the impossible, at least by my standards, in a video game). After 295 tries.

It felt like... nothing.
Then I tried to capture the spell card again. 450 tries in total and I still haven't managed to do it again. Hard gaem is hard I tell you.

Well today I tried once more. Suddenly - I beat the spell card again and again, 2 times in a row, then almost 3. I thought "damn I own this shit", but then I remembered how much my eyes hate me and decided to stop for now.

It was quite a nice surprise, though.

I don't get it. Why is it ridiculous? She's right about pretty much everything she says.

Of course, file sharing sites and ad providers like google do make money from pirated content. Of course, they don't give a shit. And of course, piracy in large parts doesn't happen out of altruism.

I don't get it. Why is it ridiculous? She's right about pretty much everything she says.

She says that the advertisers are partly to blame for piracy. That makes no sense what so ever. Why should Netflix give a shit about how Google are putting their ads on a website that is a competitor. Seriously.
She says that Google should give a shit about piracy. They are making money from it, why should they care?
She says that piracy is damaging content creators. That's correct, but they should get with it. Seriously, there is no way to stop the internet. Look at the Great Firewall of China for goodness sake. People are getting around that with VPNs among other things. Look at MaSu. They embraced piracy. They understand it, and if she wants to make money, she needs to understand it too. Yes piracy is wrong, but just because it's wrong doesn't mean it's going to stop all of a sudden.

Haha I win teh internetz war!

On a more serious note, I don't particularly like engaging in this sort of tripe. However, I feel strongly that the issue of piracy has been over hyped and is made to seem worse than it actually is. Think about this - without piracy, I would never have found MaSu, and I've spent more on MaSu than I have on any other band/record label/any other music. Seriously, it's because I believe that their material is awesome. Not because I wouldn't pirate it. Because I did. That's what made me like them so much - I could easily listen to their releases, and decide whether I liked them. Bandcamp goes a long way to rectify this problem, and I wholeheartedly support what they're trying to achieve. So come on people, buy from Bandcamp.com!

I wrote a compiler from Haskell to JavaScript, in JavaScript.
There's a demo up at http://jshc.insella.se if you are interested (I don't really expect anyone except Haskell hackers to be).
It's got an Emacs style text editor with a built in compiler/interpreter terminal. If you are familiar with Haskell and GHCi/Hugs using it should be pretty intuitive. Enter your code in the Main.hs buffer and press C-x i to compile and start the interpreter. We only support a teeny subset of Haskell yet though, and the error messages are horrible.

That's pretty cool! :) It looks like so many cool JavaScript stuff is coming out these days, like the x86 emulator (http://bellard.org/jslinux/) that went around the internet lately.
Unfortunately it's been over a year since I wrote some Haskell (and even then I just knew the basics)... took me a while that you have to import Prelude manually :)

Hm... it should be imported automatically, but then again, it's still very buggy. What browser are you using?
That x86 emu was pure dope. Me and a friend have been thinking of writing a C64 or NES emulator in JS, but since JS is a pain to code, I'll stick to this project as far as JS hacking goes.

There's already a Java emulator for the NES (or two, actually), and probably something similar for the C64 too.

Thanks dudes :D Unfortunately I don't have any pirates as project (although my son did actually dress up as pirate in my sister's weddingmasquerade) but I do have Jolly Roger-flag somewhere... Actually I doubt it would have little use as pirate-weapon because it's not sturdy enough... it's sharp alright and cuts fine but it's somewhat fragile. Just made some inventory today what I would need to do some serious blade-project (that would actually make even pirate happy) and I think I can get that stuff collected in this summer... So who knows what will come out of my forge later :D

I did it. I become father 2nd time, this time to a babygirl. Been changing diapers and hanging around with my little princess for +week now :)

You know, Gravehill, you posting things like this are cheating, 'cause it's pretty difficult to achieve something as awesome as this (especially when you have no intention of having children...). Shenanigans, I say!

What've I done...? Well, I bought my first laptop, and over the summer, I went to visit my significant other (of 9 months at the time) in England. Someone I had known for 7-8 years, and we finally had gotten together, and it was my first time ever seeing him. Needless to say, it was pretty insane. Even if I was detained by the customs agents for 5 hours... :D

I got a decent job in IT. Part-time, since I'm still four months away from a BSc degree, but with an option to go full-time whenever I want. But anyway, I'm considering it a huge success, since I work in a city with nearly 30% unemployment rate.

Awesome!

I'm hoping to go into IT and get a BSc Hons too, maybe with a Dual honours in music technology. I haven't really decided. Plus, it depends on my grades. Even so, great job! Considering every is struggling to get jobs and make the cut, it's good that you're on the ladder.

In the end it all depends of how good of a learner you are. I'm more into networking (getting some CISCO certs this semester), but I ended up as a ASP.NET developer. Learning curve is steep, but knowing some C# helps me a lot. The best thing is that it gives me motivation - I can't really study anything unless I have an objective. And experience is always wanted too.

In Poland, first jobs in IT are always underpaid. But with two-three years of experience and good skills, you can get a shitload of money. But I'm having a dilemma now - BsC, but what's next? M.S.? Do I really need it? Is it better to stay here and earn something and get M.S., or to move abroad and earn more? Right now while still living with my parents I earn 3,5€/h part-time, which seems small, but I don't really have any expenses and living here is very cheap compared to ie. UK. But there, I could be earning around 12-15€... It's difficult.

People tend to respect M.S. more, making it easier to find a better job. Try your best at keeping that part-time up while getting through the studies, even if you won't give a shit about them and just slide on the lowest grades (which is exactly what I am doing right now, though my case is a bit easier, I've just one year left ahead of me).

Right now while still living with my parents I earn 3,5€/h part-time, which seems small, but I don't really have any expenses and living here is very cheap compared to ie. UK. But there, I could be earning around 12-15€... It's difficult.

I believe it would be too risky to throw it all away now and try to move out unless you have something really certain awaiting you abroad. Stick to what you have i koxaj skilla kurwa!

Also, good job finding a good job <3

I've just gotten my first IT job after graduation as a python web developer, and I'd say experience > education at your level. MS is nice but I don't think a lot of employers look for it in entry-level/graduate employment and some companies will help pay for you to do it later if it's in  something that will benefit them. As part of my degree I worked a year in industry and I think that was a massive reason behind me getting the job I have now. Obviously without the degree I never would have done that work, and work doesn't teach you good standards beyond "the client wants it now! Fuck refactoring!". I'm on a fairly typical wage for a graduate IT peon in the UK (£18k, that's about €20k?) but it's like 2 minutes from my flat so no travel costs :)

Vishindo (http://vishindo.com/). Started pretty recently by two former Dice employees.
I'll be their music/sound department for a few weeks at least. Hopefully longer. :)

So far they've released this iPhone game.

I've had fever for few days now and I've done few things that have actually made me proud :

1) I made my homemade fragnance using traditional methods for odour-preservation and folk-healing. The smell of that aroma or fragnance comes from certain finnish plant and it's strong and really potent. Also, it's green. My wife says that it stinks like poison but I like it quite lot... It made my breathing easier and strangely enough I felt bit like being drunk soon afterwards O.o

2) I made a video where I'm having skull-mask on my face and I'm headbanging naked while my penis headbangs along with me. It looks funny.

That's available on certain finnish amateur site but you gotta be paying member to get to see videos there. I have to fix something up so that it would be available for more people... Unfortunately when I do find place to upload it posting direct link to forum might be inappropriate so I guess I PM the video's address for request when I've found out good place to upload it. I'll tell here when I did it :)

xHamster is the site, search for Finnish Headbanger... It should be there :P

PS : not for faint hearted or people with weak stomach. May cause nausea and irritation.

Some might say that middleaged overweighted skullfaced wanker headbanging with his best buddy (namely, his penis) in video, (almost) to the
rhythm of "Pirates of the caribbean", heavy metal remix, is little bit sad and pathetic. Nonetheless I find it actually really amusing and inspiring.

Atleast, doing that video was fun :)

I had approximately 38'C (bit on the side of fewer) and had this semirection ready for something... My wife felt like "meh" and I felt like "FUCK YEAH"
and since I'm gentleman I did not wank in front of my wife - not this time.

Anyways I felt bit bored and bit horny so I started to orchestrate music on the music video I was watching with it.

My wife laughed her ass off and wanted to take some sort of video out of it... Thus we made that.
