Not much has been confirmed - all Microsoft have said is it will be available January 9th American time and the beta will be "feature complete".
Looking forward to getting this. Only 2.5million downloads are available though and the download link will be live tomorrow during American hours, so I'll probably miss it. It will inevitably be torrented within the hour though, so I'll pick that up when it's available.

Windows 7 is cool, I like it a lot.
Faster the Vista and XP.
-
By Vista, you mean that Windows 7 Beta they charged the public a ridiculous amount of money for?
-

By Windows 7 Beta, you mean Aero beta.
They rebuilt W7 from the ground up. Vista cannot be considered a beta for W7 because they built it from scratch. It can however be considered a beta for the Aero theme (the same theme used by Vista and W7)
Faster than -- XP.
That's the reason I'm getting it. Computer is a pile of crap and if W7 runs faster than XP then I'll take it :D

Windows Me you say?
-
I'd get it if it ran faster than xp, but only if it isn't shit like vista.
-
Have drivers been released for it yet? Seems it's not much use to play around with until you see how it performs under a certain burden.
-
vista drivers works.
you can upgrade from vista and all drivers will stick with the installation.
-
Damn, now i'm curious. Can it be provided somehow, to someone who's too lazy to be arsed to try to find it?

For your pleasure sir =)

using this on your main comps? nothing going wrong? I am always skeptical of these things -.-
When upgrading from XP do you need the 32-bit version? does the 64bit version allow a higher max RAM capacity?

Only if you have 32-Bit CPU (you probably don't), and yes.

Aaaaaaand thanks ;)

x86 processors support 32 bit OS which is limited to address a maximum of 4Gb RAM.
x86-64 processors support 64 bit OS and can access 256Tb RAM.
(This is very easily put so that humans can read it, if you want to go up geek against geek with me we do it in PM.) =P
If you are unsure if your CPU supports x86-64 instructions, download and run cpuz
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)
I'd recommend 32bit OS to all who are unsure in any case.
Windows 7 is BETA and should not be used as primary OS if you're not ready to reformat c:\ and loose all shit on that disc.
That said, try it! =)
-
well all my main data is on my secondary HDD, and my proc is a Dual-Core 64-bit capable E8400.
-
My reaction to this is like when Nintendo announced the DSi.
-
"Well, it has a camera, so fucking what?"
-
The most my physical computer can take is 2GB RAM, so there's no fucking way my CPU can handle anything more than 4. :(
I'm very tempted to try this, though. Has anyone run into huge problems yet?

Several reports from users testing the latest leaked build of Windows 7 indicate a potential data corruption issue using Microsoft's Windows Media Player 12.
Windows 7 beta 1 build 7000 leaked over the Christmas holidays and a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that there is a bug which affects the leaked build. Approximately 2-3 seconds will get shaved off the beginning of MP3s if you have set your Windows Media Player 12 settings to retrieve information from the internet and update files. The default configuration for WMP12 sets this if you use the "express" option during setup.
"The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB). When the new metadata is written, it corrupts the beginning of the file. This can happen either when you edit the metadata from inside WMP or Explorer, or it can happen if you have WMP set to automatically fill in missing metadata using the online service and add the MP3 to your library. This problem is only present in the recently leaked build" (7000) according to one poster in our forums.
Microsoft's official response is "Microsoft is aware of this issue and it will be addressed in the beta program". The company is currently hard at work readying a QFE (quick fix engineering) patch that will be distributed by Windows Update for those with official and non-official access. A support (KB) article is expected soon.
This highlights the importance of not using leaked builds with any applications or data that is critical and waiting for beta builds from official channels. We expect Microsoft to stress the urgency of applying the QFE patch to those in the beta program.

I'm not trying this. I spent 15+ hours to expand my Vista drive (taking some space from the XP drive), and now I don't really have any space to make a new partition to try it out. (I could try it out by installing it over my XP installation, but then I lose my only 32-bit OS)
-
I still feel this is the new ME.

I still feel this is the new ME.
Wasn't that Vista?
-
Using Win7 right now, I am not used to some things, some of the ways the control panel handles devices, the taskbar compression, and I cannot seem to play folders/sub-folders in winamp through right-click anymore :(

I installed the latest beta of Windows 7 on my macbook (out of boredom) and I must say, kudos to you microsoft. Yes, you've blatently copied OSX in every conceivable way, but (unlike Vista) you've actually done it fairly well this time. It looks nice, seems to run fairly quickly, and the new interface is fairly intuitive. I particularly like how dragging a window to the side of the sceen resizes it to fill half of the screen, very useful when programming and looking at 2 classes.
-
My cousin and his friends have all installed it on their computers. Some of them have had problems with the 32-bit version, but none of them have had problems with the 64-bit. Some even switched from the 32 to the 64 and have been perfectly satisfied.
-
I using the x64 7077 build for a week or so as my primary system. No hangups, no hiccups, fast as hell even with all the GUI enhancing shitz0r turned on. Love the new taskbar, and didn't have any bigger problems with the drivers or installing any of the software. My lappy is C2D 2,2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and GeForce 8600M GS (which sucks big time). My WE score is 3.5 (because of the gfx card). And it's faster than XP, srsly.

Win7 RC1 is out in the wild!
All free for everyone that wants it, just logon with your liveID and pick the version you want! No limits this time, it'll work 100% until March 1 2010 (almost a year). It's basicly a free one year trial of Windows 7 for the public! :D
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx
The only limit is that it'll only be availible for download until the end of July, after that you'll have to wait for the real release.
-
... no limits?..;P
"Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours."
And i'm not even kidding. ;P

Im a noob so im gonna ask noob questions: hope you can help.
Anybody running Cubase on it? Or computer games? Does it have that compatibility issue that comes as standard with vista, or did at the start.. ?
Im on XP Pro atm, and having no problems with it really.. well, not much, is this really worth getting? And be construcitively honest here, i'm quite scared of cleaning out my system to put on an OS that could potentially still be quite buggy. What are the major issues people have found so far?
-
I have several friends who have run this for a long time, and they've had little to no problems with bugs or compatibility. They can run almost everything on W7, the only major compatibility problems I've heard of are that Daemon-Tools won't work (other optical drive emulators work though).
About 64bit/32bit: whether you can run 64bit depends on the type of processor you have. If you know if your processor supports it, it might be worth a try. If you don't know, it doesn't really matter.
-
I've also got friends who have trouble with ventrilo and skype and other apps like that.

There don't seem too be too many problems I have seen. And Daemon released a version compatible with Win7, so that isnt an issue anymore either.
but the "cleaning out my system" seems weird, you never want to remove an old OS to replace it with a "trial" of another one anyways, once the trial ends you would be left with nothing.

Never used Skype, but I have had 0 problems with Ventrilo so far.

I'll probably be using W7 as my main OS next time I reinstall Windows (which might be quite soon). If it doesn't deliver, I'll just reinstall Vista (yes, I run Vista and I like it). By March 2010 I'll probably have found something to replace my RC install, anyway.
-
I got scared away from using Vista - but this looks more promising. I'm tempted to install it on my netbook at least, should be an interesting way to test drive.
-
I just upgraded my laptop from vista premium x86 to Win7 x64, and it's better in every way. It's got all the good things of vista with some of the bad (but not the worst) and some of it's own good things. Finding a graphics driver that works was pure hell of course, (always is with laptops...) but everything else went smoothly, it's much quicker and more responsive than vista ever was, even when comparing Win7 in Aero against Vista in 9x themes...
-
I am currently running the RC1 on my main gamingrig.
No problems with drivers, tho I have quite fresh hardware.
ATI's whql drivers works nice.
I also installed it on my GF's Acer aspire one 110 with 8Gb SSD (the slow version).
After 7 hours of compressing files the installation was finished.
The only thing that didn't work was the synaptics touchpad driver.
I tried installing it with compability mode.
Crashed. Uninstalled it and then it did work.. lol =)
No problem with sound, graphics, chipset, wlan.
Windows 7 is übah!
One issue I noticed is when starting games.
Sometimes and on some games I get black screen.
The solution has always been to edit some *game.ini file to set manual resolution, refresh rate and dx content.
-
Whenever I need to updated drivers for my GTX 260, I just go to the Windows Update application and get the newest drivers if available. ^_^
-
Microsoft did the best thing since Xbox 360. Though this one doesn't get 3ROD.
-
Can you directly upgrade the previous beta version with the RC without a fresh install?
-
You can, but it's not recommended and not supported.
-
I didn't have any problems with upgrading from beta to RC.
-
I didn't have any problems with upgrading from beta to RC.
I don't have much time left to upgrade, how did you do it? just install over? or was there an upgrade option? maybe pm me some info before my time....expires :p
