Title: Laptop Problem. Windows won't boot after AVGprofessional bug deleted USER32.DLL
Post by: Jack Lupino on November 11, 2008, 03:48:28 pm
Now, i've reinstalled the user32.dll file from the SP2 windows cd, and windows booted like normal, but after a couple of minutes screen went blue for a tenth of a second and kept rebooting.
Its after the "welcome" text screen goes blue, and dissapears too fast to actually read the fault error.
Pressing Pauze/break doesn't help anyway.
So what i did is i renamed the user32.dll into user32.txt, re expanded the user32.dll from drive E: in to my C:/windows/system32/ folder.
Now Of no avail though, because the problem still persists.
Ofcourse i could re install the computer but due to the valuable software that is installed that is not an option.

In case you are not able to run your Windows XP operating system after AVG virus definition update, it may be caused by a false positive on a specific "user32.dll" system file. The file was moved to the AVG Virus Vault and deleted. Therefore it is not possible to start Windows. Please follow the steps below to rectify this situation:
1. Please insert the Windows XP installation CD and boot computer from this CD.

2. Choose and run Recovery Console.

3. Choose Windows operating system you want to repair.

4. Disable AVG Resident Shield from loading. You can disable loading services/drivers with "disable" command, i.e. you have to type the following commands (some

of them might not be present in all AVG editions):

disable avgMfx86
disable avgMfa86
disable avgldx86
disable avglda86

5. Restore the User32.dll file from the Windows XP installation CD (instead "D:" use letter of your CD-ROM drive):

expand D:\i386\user32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\

In case the command fails, please use the following command to rename original user32.dll and repeat the command above.

ren user32.dll user32.bak

6. Restart computer and boot Windows normally.

7. In order to re-enable the AVG Resident Shield services we recommend that you perform the AVG repair installation as follows:

- Download the latest AVG installation package from the following webpage and save it on your hard disk:

http://www.avg.com/download?prd=aav
(AVG Anti-Virus 8.0)
http://www.avg.com/download?prd=ais
(AVG Internet Security 8.0)
http://www.avg.com/download?prd=avf
(AVG Anti-Virus plus Firewall 8.0)

- When you are prompted, please do not open this file directly from the internet, but click the Save button and choose a location, where the installation

file should be stored. We recommend saving the file to the Desktop.
- Restart your computer.
- Locate the downloaded AVG installation file (it has a four color square icon and its name starts with AVG_...) and launch the installation by

double-clicking on it.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- When prompted, please select the Repair installation option.
- Enter your license number when you are asked (we recommend that you use the copy&paste* method to enter this license number into the installation form).
- Restart your computer and update AVG.

This is the quote from the AVG's official site.
It is a known bug and that should fix it, and it did for a couple of minutes.
But now, the state has resumed to how it was and i don't know how i'm supposed to fix it.
Unleash your power, forumites.

Is it not possible to boot into safe mode, do a system restore and fix it?
You could always boot up a live cd of linux, grab the programs you have there and reformat? ]:

Or just do a windows install on top of your current one. It won't delete any files, it will only overwrite the windows ones, leaving your file system, installed programs and even desktop icons intact.

It'll render your old user accounts innaccessible though, and if you have the option for other users to not be able to see the stuff in your documents, everything in there will also be innaccessible. They're still there, taking up space, you just can't reach them.

If i do reinstall the OS ontop of the current one, i already thought of that but i was afraid to lose the registery, thus software.
Already tried the other ones, though i think i managed to fix it today, i went in to the OS recovery console (with the xp boot disk), disabled all the AVG virusscanners and shit so if i replaced or placed user32.dll, it wouldn't get deleted again right away.
So then, i renamed user32.dll, expanded user32.dll from the boot disk and give it a try. Xp booted up without help from the boot disk, giving me a message that SP2 was installed (i scoffed)

Hopefully that will take care of it, thanks for all your quick comments and replies!

+1 to all in this thread.

If the problem still isn't fixed i will post it here :]

One thing i learnt after having a few OS failures was to partition the drive and have two versions of windows going at once. I have vista and XP on one disc, so if one fails i can just login to the other one and use that while i fix!
I also have a second hard drive that most my important programs live on. You should try it! Big HDDs are cheap these days and are a breeze to install [:

Not if you've got a laptop.

If i do reinstall the OS ontop of the current one, i already thought of that but i was afraid to lose the registery, thus software.

If you're anything like me, it wouldn't matter too much, as you wouldn't be reinstalling everything anyway, so you'd lose maybe 2 hours at the very very most.

Okay, yeah, I guess that poses more problems then. Assuming said problems haven't already been solved.

Not if you've got an old laptop.

The term is 'Dellbuntu'. And it's hardly old, merely intentionally crippled, as I don't really game anymore, therefore I don't need an OMGAWESOME system.
