Title: Little Freaks Project
Post by: Crimzen on June 29, 2011, 01:34:26 am
In the User Releases Thread me, Hadou, and several other musicians started throwing the idea around of some MaSu remixes/covers/tributes. And now I think that's coming to fruition and so I'm moving this discussion from the User Release Collection to here: Little Freaks Project.

My band is Sleeping Awake. I'll be contributing to this MaSu Tribute Compilation. I, like Hadou (hope I can speak for him here) agree about the awesome line in the song Stand. A rebel force, an army, of little freaks So my initial idea was to call the compilation album something like Little Freaks Volume 1: A Tribute To Machinae Supremacy. That's just my suggestion and idea, you can put up yours and we might put them all in a poll to see what name the majority likes.

@Hadou: I always upload in FLAC, that's just me. But as long as it's FLAC or the other high formats, anyone that downloads can choose what format they want it converted to when they receive the album. So as long as we can all upload as high quality as possible then I don't see that it matters what format. But mine will be in FLAC ;)

The only song I have completed as of right now, is a remix of Ghost. And you can find it here to listen to:
http://soundcloud.com/sleepingawake/i-die-ghost-remix

So if you have songs you've made for this. Go ahead and post the links to the songs. Your suggestions for this compilation. Whether it be album art, album name, and anything else. Can't wait to get all this started!

WOOT!

Okay. Here is everything I have done so far, available for download here (http://alexdickey.bandcamp.com/album/kaori-nao-walls-cant-keep-us-in-the-ninja-report).

Each track can also be found on my SoundCloud page (http://soundcloud.com/hadou123), along with Work In Progress versions.

I have made 3 tracks for Little Freaks so far:
1. Kaori Nao (http://soundcloud.com/alex-dickey/kaori-nao)
2. Walls Can't Keep Us In (http://soundcloud.com/alex-dickey/walls-cant-keep-us-in)
3. The Ninja Report (http://soundcloud.com/alex-dickey/the-ninja-report)

Personally, I would say that if we are going to collate mine and everyone else's tracks, we should just use a simple format. Personally, I vote for 44.1khz, 24-bit FLAC with level 8 compression. 44.1khz is the lowest sample rate that Bandcamp will accept, and is CD quality. FLAC is a widely popular format and I know that Foobar 2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/), a program for Windows, will convert most formats into this exact specification of FLAC. Level 8 compression I'm saying because it reduces the filesize slightly, making for easy uploads to services like Bandcamp.
Lucky, what you said about them all being converted still stands, but I suppose if people don't know what type of compression they need, they this spec is a guideline. I say that if you don't want to follow this guideline, you make the track of a higher quality. Heck, I'm pretty sure Bandcamp allows for uncompressed WAVs.

What I must add, is please don't delete your source files and your exports, because you may need them again :P

Also, Lucky, maybe you should have a list of all the people who we know are participating in this so we can keep tabs and get this thing rolling.

Finally, keep up the good work, I have already heard some people's work for this, and it sounds amazing. Keep up the good work, and please keep me posted, I love hearing these tracks.

Alrighty. Same version as before:
http://soundcloud.com/tommauritzon/ffn-wip-3

Currently recording some vocals. A mix of my own voice and computerized stuff. Still working it out.
I'm a bit short on time and motivation atm. But I aim to get it completed next week sometime.

I could give the album cover a shot if I may. I do some art stuff from time to time.

Also, good work fellas. Keep it up. ^‿‿^

I hope the vocal recording goes ok, I'm really looking forward to your FfN track.

I would also love it if you did some epicness for the cover art. I don't know about the rest of everyone, but I would love it. Maybe do a sketch of all of us sort of like this that you did (http://likfisk.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d3k22od).

I agree with Hadou, the art is sick. I'm definitely 1+ for Tom to do some album art.

I'm trying to work on a new remix. I wish I could get some pure vocals so I didn't have to find stuff to match the background instruments (Rob or any other band members reading...is it possible to get vocal only tracks for us to do clean remixes with? If not of the new songs but the old site releases or DXM? If not that's cool, I just wanna know!) So here's to my attempt at making something without putting all the dubstepness into it xD

Is anything being done at the moment? The MSUR thread has just sorta died. All my current commitments are completed, I've made 3 songs for the compilation, and I'll be willing to do more for it. I have also made a track that can be found on my soundcloud page. At the moment, I'm off so I have lots of time to do stuff.
What are we going to do about the coverart? I feel it should be something original and not just some rehash of images available on the internet. I'm learning the ropes of Photoshop but I am not particularly capable yet. I do have some stock MaSu logos from the Wayback machinae. I have a plain logo that can be used as an image mask, the glass logo of old, a rainbow effected logo etc.
If anyone needs these if they want to make a cover, I can upload them.

Music stuff is on hold for like at least two weeks I guess on my part. u____u'
I just got accepted for a uni summer course (sound design yay). A few weeks after it started though, so I really need to get that shit done first.

I am still tinkering with some tracks. Nothing official yet but i should have at least 2 extra to my 1 in a couple weeks. I have had great feedback from my In The Shadows album i have been working on some tracks for Volume 2. Cover art i agree should be something original. Or even simple like a cool edited MaSu Trinity. I do like Tom M.'s art as well

Awesome! Sound design is an awesome topic, and I am doing a similar thing (Music Technology) for my A Levels :D

Yeah, In The Shadows is great! I can't wait to hear a volume 2.
I also can't wait for your two new tracks? Yum yum yum yum.
I literally just learned how to do a basic masking technique with photoshop, so my plain trinity's will look great eh?

So I finally pulled something together so I could have a second song! Right now I think it's kinda short. I'm thinking of adding a bit more to make it at least 3:30 - 3:40 to make it seem complete. Let me know what you think! It's along the same style as I Die

I love it much more than I Die, and I loved the way that gave me shivers. The samples work much better in this track than I Die, too. Awesome.

In other news, I figured I'd finally throw something together for album, and if people like it, I may take it further, or assign it to someone with better graphic art skills than moi.
It's pretty much all interchangable, the background, the window view, the font, the text, it was just a framework for improvements. Tell me what you think, and I might be able to improve my (lousy) photoshop skills in the process.
(http://www1.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/4067315e60bcf7c5d9bebc0f4d62e71f1cf5831ac4c32098f9aacc5710b3bf395g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=2lyjsylysp3x2sl&thumb=4)

Here's some blurb:
1. The dark background texture is stolen directly from the new band website. If someone could direct me to a less plagiarised style of texture, that would be lovely, or even instructions to make my own, that would be awesome.
2. The "window" view, the Northern Lights is a picture taken in Lulea, Sweden, where the band are from. Again, it's not mine, and some other Lulea themed photos that I can have for free legally would be awesome. For those who like imagery, how about this: The Northern Lights are freaky - they are a phenomenon. Little Freaks? Freaky lights? Um...
3. Fonts I salvaged after a few quick Google searches. Even if they are not when people want for the cover, I'm glad I found them, because I like them :P
4. I might make a back cover for the project, including a tracklisting, if you guys give thumbs up for the front cover.

Finally, as I said, all the artwork, fonts etc. are interchangeable, so if you want some of you drawings or whatever on here, I'm sure if people agree to it, it can be arranged... :D

EDIT: I forgot to stick a "Volume 1" subtitle in there. It should probably replace the "AD, SA, TM & More" subtitle I had there as a placeholder. Also, if we do make a Volume 2, then the main design of the cover could remain the same, with different images in the window?

EDIT 2: Continuing with my "I MUST IMPROVE" streak on Photoshop, I got a load of brushes and tips on how to make some textures, and keeping that in mind, I made a few things:
1: http://www.mediafire.com/i/?fqjwnk4dk61d59v
2: http://www.mediafire.com/i/?bcsgl5axz13jya8 <-- Darker version of 1, more suited for a background.
3: http://www.mediafire.com/?e7hn2f7blyksuyq
The third is currently my wallpaper :P

Thanks for the input! I am actually liking this one a lot better than I Die (still like I Die though lol) but I feel like I've got the timing on this better. I'm thinking of extending it. To maybe around 3:30 making it seem fuller. To me it ends a little quickly.

The album cover I like it a lot! Esp. with having the Trinity Symbol having different images behind it every album. I think that would be sweet. As far as your texture edits. I like the first one the best. The brighter green texture. Badass! If you cut the Trinity symbol out of that I'd say that would work perfectly.

I agree with having just Volume 1 there instead of our names. Because I think we can upload the tracks and ID Tag each individual artist. And a random idea I had. Could you make one where there is no image in the background of the Trinity? So when someone downloads it they can put any image behind it? The idea I'm thinking is, have a cool texture, the Trinity symbol, and a picture that we all want as the background. Then give the listener one with transparency so they can put their own image (if they want to) making each Volume cover customizable xD

Yes, yes, yes and yes. And yes. And some more yes. Customisable volume covers? OMG Yes.
I'm currently uploading a revised Vol 1 cover. Stay tuned.

EDIT: Here it is.
(http://www1.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/40ede79d58c77aed2f87ec8e66676d4d18afcbc960193e360b5104bd0d79fdaa5g.jpg) (http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=8vybm1ne8vo6qoa&thumb=4)

Whichever version we go for, a customisable cover is very easy to do, all I have to do is remove the window image, and export it with transparency. Tell me what you think about V2.

EDIT 2: After looking at it with JPG compression (which is what, tbh, most people would have it with), Volume 1 is barely readable. I'm working on changing the font.
EDIT 3: What do you guys think of this: http://www.dafont.com/dink.font?text=Volume+1

Dude I think it looks freaking epic! I'm down for that. Hopefully the other artists in here will put there opinions in, but I approve!  ;)

I can see the font good, but I get what you're saying and that's understandable. I'm sure there's still a badass free font out there.

Definitely get one with transparency. I think we should still have a static image back there, I'm digging the Northern Lights. And then having a link for them to get the transparent one. Customizable album covers just popped in to my head, because you know some people on the forum would have fun with that and for later Volumes we could have a contest and a poll for what becomes the "static" image on Volume 2 or 3  ;D

Win.
In terms of transparency, it all worked OK until I uploaded it to Mediafire. It (seemed to) export correctly, but upon uploading, it turned out like this:
http://www.mediafire.com/imageview.php?quickkey=cyzhczw1x56arhh&thumb=4 :(
Despite this, I'm sure there is an easy workaround to this.
That also show the new font I chose for the the "Volume 1" subtext. I love the idea for a contest for a future volume, but what I'm more concerned about is the lack of tracks confirmed.
I have 3, you have 2, Tom has 1, but who else is making a track? I'm very confused.
I wish I could collate everything that people have made, and just have it in a folder on my desktop, so I can keep organised and keep my OCD tendencies at bay.
Questions to discuss:
1. How many people are contributing?
2. How many have made track(s) so far?
3. When are people planning to get their tracks finished?
4. Can I please have everyone's tracks in FLACs please?

Well let's see. From what I can gather:

Artists / Number of Songs:

That's all I can really find. I thought easyname had something, but I don't think so now. I think though that easyname and Jack Lupino (yes I called upon the holy Moderator lol) could make some killer tracks. As well as digital0verl0rd (miss you buddy!)

You can has all of mine in FLAC. And I'm going to have You're In Hell and I Die finished up by middle of next week. I'm moving to another state to be with my fiance by August 6th so I have a lot to prepare. But during the night I will be an editing fiend! Just tweaking and perfecting my two tracks.

EDIT: Even though I'm still learning and it seems You're In Hell turned out even better than I Die. I will try to make a 3rd track! And dang about the transparency thing, try saving it as a PNG. That's why I have to do to make the transparency stay when I do things.

EDIT 2: *FACEPALM* it is in PNG...lol my bad

  • Tom Mauritzon / 1

6 Tracks is not much. We need some more people, and then start working on deciding a tracklist.
Cool about your moving situation, I hope it is smooth and you enjoy your new state.
Can't wait to hear your two tracks finished.
Transparency: I'm it will not be too difficult to fix the transparency issue, but I will work on fixing that bridge when I come to it. I don't feel the cover is finished yet.
Finally: Yes, it is a .PNG, but I'm not sure the alpha channels were rendered properly. I will look into it, don't worry about it.

At the moment, we have ~22 minutes of tribute. That isn't much, considering we are waiting on only easyname and Jack Lupino? Fuck me. Nice work dude. Maybe we can have a community colab at the end of the album or something? All of us contribute to a single track? Maybe, choose a key signature, all jam and send a few audio tracks to one person who can mix it and produce an immense track at the end of it? What do you guys think?

EDIT: http://hadou-wave-of-rising.deviantart.com/ Fuck mediafire, it keeps screwing up my uploads. Instead I will be using my dusty deviantART account to upload my photoshop attempts, aswell as the album cover updates. Stay tuned :D

No Jack and easyname havent said they would collab i was just throwing their names out because they have some wicked tunes and if they read all of this then maybe they might hop on board :P And the idea of all of us combining our musical powers to create and epic long track im down. Whatever the title of that track is we should put -ology at the end of it lol

Lucky, I'm loving your extended remix, except those bubble sounds. While not very noticeably different sounding with my headphones, they came out very loud when I played the sound on my speakers.
Your wallpaper is very nice, minimalistic. I think to make it slightly better, maybe add some noise or a slight texture to the black background. It is very plain in that respect.

@Hadou: I was thinking that too with the bubble sound effects. I almost think they would be best taken out altogether and have some minor sound effects in between the MaSu samples. Or even some ambiance.

I also saved that LF as a transparent logo so I could just paste it on to anything lol. I'll try playing around with some cool textures. See what Vers. 2 of the wallpaper would look like ;)

Yeah well, I only joined a few years back.

Anyways, back on topic, I have a few demos for the Empire remake. I'm no great shakes when it comes to singing, but I thought I'd give it a shot.
Half of the chorus as a test: http://soundcloud.com/alex-dickey/empire-001-half-of-chorus-test
The entire chorus: http://soundcloud.com/alex-dickey/empire-002-chorus

I might make and upload some harmony vocals if those are asked upon. I might also redo my 3 current track with vocals, if people don't cringe when listening to these clips.

Finally, I say this: use these tracks for whatever you want for personal use, whether regular or perverted. All I say is that if you do use these tracks for anything other than the LFP, credit me.

Any more updates on when people's tracks are going to be ready?

The MSUR thread and this have sort of died recently. Has anyone done anything more to their tracks?

I haven't yet. I've been so busy here with my new job (10 hrs a day 40 hrs a week) I haven't really adjusted to working so much so I've been super tired. I really want to work on some so maybe in the next week I'll have something more! I don't want this to die!

Sorta depressed about life and shizz lately. So productivity has been suffering. Trying to get my shit together really.
Things have been getting better lately though. :)

Fighters from Ninne is veeery close to done. I'll skip the Empire cover.

Sorry to hear that Tom. I'm glad things are geting better, and I hope things continue to be. I find watching Toby Turner on youtube really helps me get back into being happy again when I'm down. It's probably not going to help, but give it a shot - he's just awesome!
http://www.youtube.com/tobyturner

Either way, it's good that stuff may be picking up soon on the music front - for me, it's gonna stop suddenly: I am going to start my A levels in two weeks. I have some stuff that I have uploaded, and I'll still try to get some done, I just can't promise anything.

Oh well...

Now that my Vulture EP is up and it does have the two MaSu remixes on there, I feel the style of Vulture is where my remixes will fall under. So you can change it from Sleeping Awake to Vulture in the Little Freaks lineup...Speaking of that, working on 3rd remix as I type!

Ooh... I might give this a try. There's plenty of electronic stuff here; I'm thinking something in that vein, with a bit more metal, a bit more orchestral and ambiance.

I might remix one or both of Killer Instinct and Dark City. Maybe Skin too. :D

I have asked my band's singer if she wanted to help me out on these projects, and she obliged. MaSu songs with primarily female vocals - I don't think that's been done before.

Cool!

I can't wait to hear Dark City with female vocals, especially with a more orchestral theme.

It would be awesome for new blood on this project, it's been a bit dusty lately, with barely anyone actually contributing anything. At the moment, we have I think 6 or 7 tracks currently up. With even just two of your tracks, that'll bring it up to a double-EP amount of songs, something that could easily be distributed online for free.
I suppose after your tracks are complete (if you do actually go ahead), we should decide on a tracklisting, and then make like a dedicated Bandcamp page for the little freaks. I vote that someone (maybe me or lucky, seeing as we made the idea) make a Bandcamp page, and then everyone who wants to contribute tracks sends the lossless songs to that person, who uploads them. Remember on Bandcamp that there are options for selecting the "Track Artist" that is separate to the overall artist page. Also, if you send me the PayPal email addresses, individual donations would go to the specific track artist, rather than to just 1 person. That way, if people want  to donate to a specific person, they have the option to do that.

If you guys suggest that I do all the bandcamp organisation, I can set it up so that this all works well :D

Here we go. 30-ish seconds of audio for the intro, and still absolutely none of it is covered.

I'm not sure if I want to add guitar over this or not - it may end up sounding too much like the original.

Hey, what happened to this thread? I was looking forward to hearing all the stuff you guys ended up making.

Um, mine are all done. You can listen to them... somewhere. I don't even know.

I think it would probably be easiest if you guys all send me the files you want to put up, and then I upload them and get it all sorted. Tomorrow, I'll make a bandcamp page called something like littlefreaks.bandcamp.com and then I'll upload my tracks. When you guys send me your songs, I'll upload them.

This thread hasn't been updated in a while. I have made a bandcamp page, and at the moment, you guys cannot see what is on it:
http://littlefreaks.bandcamp.com/
If you want your tracks to be included in the compilation, please send me a link to a lossless version of your song via PM, and I will upload it. If you want any "Liner notes" as such to appear next the the track on the page, please write those up in the PM too.

Uploading more stuff to it.

I've had a re-listen to my old tracks, and I really don't think they are up to my standard any more. I might make some new ones xD

I'm also putting AcouSID on the album simply because it is my most MaSu inspired, and it's way more SID-ey than my older songs.

Xandros is happy for his songs to be on the compilation (I assume, from what Lucky has told me) so his MaSu tracks will be uploaded as soon as I get lossless copies. As for the rest of you, get PMming!

At the moment, we have 6 Tracks and 1 bonus track. It totals 31 minutes and 12 seconds. TO be honest, I think that's pretty decent for Volume 1, and seeing as we haven't had much response from people who have made notions towards doing one but never got around to doing it, I think we should release it as is.

The tracklist is as follows:

1. I Die (Ghost Remix)
2. A View from the End of the World (Electronic Remix)
3. You're In Hell
4. R15E
5. Machinae Prime (Remix)
6. AcouSID     <---- This is the Hidden Track
7. Hybrid (Remix)
Plus there's 12 bits of album art that you can choose from.

you mean these 2 jumping bars must be kept between -6 and -3?  :D

I tried to compress, but they still jump around ~ -2 to -7 and song overall peak is just below zero :P
