Title: Well, I'm screwed.
Post by: Drakonis on January 02, 2007, 03:28:56 pm
So my car broke down the other day. Oil light came on after I got the car to start again (as well as some very loud clanking sounds). I immediately killed it and checked the oil - gone, all gone. I had checked it not too long ago.

I brought it to a local mechanic who thought maybe I needed an oil change. I know very little about cars, so I agreed to an oil change and a checkup. I could still drive it, but if I started to accelorate it would clank and drag. All the power was gone.

They didn't do squat but charge me, so I brought it to a different mechanic. This one told me he didnt need to look at the car and my worst fear was realised. I knew "knocking", but this sounding more like "clanking" and a chain rumbling. This other mechanic (as well as my friend later) told me it was a busted rod and my engine is kaput.

So I have no car now apparently. Sigh. I am, as they say, screwed. =\

Sounds too familiar. Car = expensive. Good that you have friend with mechanic skills. Even if he does not do works but his knowledge will help you to not get cheated. I'm happy that all we need is just one car and one bicycle. If we were living further we would need two cars and it would ruin our economy.

I love my bike, but would sure as hell not give up my car.

I feel your pain I'm a computer guy, not a car guy, I almost ran out of oil on my 1st car which would have killed the engine. Now that you know to check I'm sure you wont forget.

Thanks for the sympathy and stuff =P

I havent logged in since I found out about my car. Been too stressed.

I spent about six hours yesterday at a dealer. All is well (other than my funds for the next EVER).

I now own a 2002 Honda Accord 2 door (red). Leather interior, v6 engine, and overall sexyness.

I feel as though a huge weight has lifted off my shoulders. Transportation once more, thank god.

What about the weight of the finance deal you inevitably took? :P

Nice to hear that you got wheels once again. Seems like very nice ride.

Lol, I did the same thing when my 1st car got fucked, I went out got a loan form my 2001 Hyundai Tiburon. The financial burden isnt that bad as long as your income is dependable and you are responsible.

Lets say for someone with average credit (not very established) and never making a large purchase, I'm happy with the finance deal I got. 14.49% - I know its not wonderful, but I can always refinance the vehicle in about a year once I've established some credit with this loan.

The kelly bluebook suggested retail price from a dealer for my vehicle is 17010. I got it for significantly cheaper, 13,600. I added gap insurance and maxed out warrenty.

The payments are going to be a big change for me, but I make enough and I think I can be responsible enough with my money to make it work. Just inspiration to take advantage of this unlimited overtime I have at work (now specifically, up through april, when it really is truely unlimited).

My old car was traded in. They gave me 500 bucks for it, regardless of its trashed state. I actually take that in today. They said if I can get it onto the lot, they'll take it. And I know i can get it to the lot (I may have to drive 10 miles going 30 mph but it'll make it).

Honestly I got it up to 45 without any big issues, but the knocking got a little louder. I'd rather just be safe and baby it there. Regardless, worst case scenario is it breaks down, I junkyard it, and pay them 500 cash on top of my 1,000 down. I'd rather not do that, so lets not jynx my trade in =P

I was going to get a Honda Accord, but they hold their value forever, and I settled with something cheaper. My current car has nice sound system, and leather seats, but is a bit small, good gas mileage though.

you should be able to get 500 for a completely non-functional car... maybe 400. but if it still runs i'll bet you could get a few hundred more. of course, much like me, it's too late now. (when i totaled my car i basically sold it to the first people who said they'd give me anything cause i wanted to be rid of it, but i should have looked harder)

Yah, Insurance paid me for more than my car was worth ($2000 when i bought it for $1200) because some one aesthitically totaled it in our school parking lot.

Ouch.

Well, its thumping cause a rod is bent or blown.

I guess I should have tried to sell it first, but now my hands are tied.

I know its kelly bluebook for a functional car was only 600 or so bucks. Its a 95 tercel with 140K + miles on it and a blown rod. Mechanic recommended not to drive the vehicle at all and consider it totalled.

Hehe.

Yeah. Imagine my joy stepping out of a 95 tercel into a 2002 Honda Accord V6.

Still gotta get use to this :P

Good luck with your new car, and may your old one find its essence reincarnated in something that isn't a a Tercel. >>
