Title: Linkin Park... (Merged with Linkin Park's New Album Thread)
Post by: harvey danger on April 09, 2007, 10:14:34 pm
... isn't "Nu-Metal" anymore?

Linkin Park Ripping Nu-Metal (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/linkin_park_ripping_nu-metal.html)

*Cough.*

All joking aside, I think they made decent music on Meteora... so this should be interesting.

I don't know about the other songs, but when I heard "What I've done" I didn't like the singing at all. It feels so weak. Damn it, the whole song feels weak.  :(

I didn't think it was too bad. I remember hearing a song a while back that was a collaboration between Chester Bennington and DJ Z-Trip that was awesome (it reminded me of Timeplitters 2), so I'm hoping this newest CD will be a lot like that.

I thought some of those were okay, but I always enjoy watching collabs between artists just to see what kinds of mutations they come up with.

?

Thing with the piano intro, chorus was:

"What it meant to me / will eventually / be a memory / of a time when I tried so hard
And got so far
But in the end
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the end
It doesn't even matter"

etc.

No?

Or do none of you listen to the radio? >>

I almost fell out of my chair.  :-X

Funny story, I found the CD, said "hey, I know, I'll trade it since I don't listen to it anymore," and then the day I decided to send it, I lost it again.

Meh. It was a bad leak, no advance has been released yet - the one hovering around torrents is by a band called Tribal Inc. :/

EDIT: humm, to Chester's new look:

I'm keen to hear new Linkin Park material, even though I gave up on them about 2 or 3 years ago (not long after Meteora). I'd like to hear their new music - give them a chance ya know - after fucking up so terribly with that JayZ collaboration (damn you MTV!). I saw the vieo for their new song on Youtube a frew days ago. I thought it was good. Nothing special, mind. But good. I agree that Chester's voice wasn't nearly as powerful as it used to though. But I'll give it a try when I can.

Me too, i instantly hated it.

Its with all these new videos, o wait the world is dying, lets all make videos about it and pretend we care.

Well perhaps they do care. But you get my vibe.

I'm really interested in what else they have come up with on the album. What I've done feels so boring. I like the songs where they express more anger. Don't Stay for instance. I keep a very open opininon at this point though. And the Jay-Z colaboration is best forgotten. Hip-hop or rap or whatever its called will always be a mystery for me. Its a man cursing to some cheap blipblop with to many naked women in their videos.

I'm actually suprised the majority of this forum likes Linkin Park. They are quite a touchy subject, really. The band themselves cant even decide what genre they are. They seem to be going in all directions at once and a lot of people hate what they've been doing.

Good on you forums! *pats forum's back* Good on you for remembering LP's good old songs rather than their dodgy hip-hop and whole remix-ey period, because imo that was a load of shite.

I liked Linkin Park up until I read this article on Blabbermouth.

Clickies. (http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=70140)

But for those of you who don't wanna click the link, I'll just post it here.

Quote
Jeff Vrabel of Billlboard magazine recently spoke to the members of LINKIN PARK about the group's new album, "Minutes to Midnight", due on May 15 via, Warner Bros.

"There's still a hip-hop element to us, and there'll always be," LINKIN PARK singer Chester Bennington told Billboard. "But we've really moved away from anything that sounds like nu-metal. I know that we kind of helped create, I guess, the sound of that genre, but I hate that genre. I'm not going to speak for everyone, but I can personally tell you that I am not a big fan of almost everybody in that category. There are a few bands that I don't really believe belong in there, and we're one of those bands."

"Minutes" was assembled during the past year in producer Rick Rubin's Laurel Canyon, California, mansion; you may remember it from such albums as the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS' "BloodSugarSexMagik".

"Rick said, right away, whatever we thought LINKIN PARK fans wanted to hear, whatever we thought we were labeled, whatever we thought we had to write, just to throw it all away. None of it mattered," Bennington recalled.

Rubin also dialed down the band's tendency toward what MC Mike Shinoda called "perfectionism," eschewing overdubs and polishing in favor of a rawer, more live sound. Drummer Rob Bourdon said that after spending weeks tweaking the drum production on one track, he was stunned when Rubin told him to scrap it all and use the demo version instead.

Bennington added, "Around Christmas of last year, I was getting impatient. Like, 'Man, is this thing ever going to end?' But it was definitely worth the time and energy we put into making the album."

Doesn't mean he hates his own music. He said himself that he doesn't believe Link Park belongs in the Nu Metal genre which might be a fair statement seeing as they pretty much did create the groundwork for it. It might be that he wants to distance them from the kind of bands that now receive that classification.

I like it a lot so far. The album has a fine mix of ballad songs, 'Shinoda songs, anthemic songs and slow, light songs. They sound a lot more mature now, with less suicidal whingey lyrics and more political, I suppose you could say.. meaningful sound.

Song reviews:

"Wake" - ..not much to say here, starts off slow and mellow, and gradually builds up into dist guitars and really sets the mood for the album ahead.

"Given Up" - Chester singing throughout - Catchy beat to it, clap clap clap clappity clap, catchy guitar riff, very anthemic and upbeat song.

"Leave Out All The Rest" - Another Chester song - Starts off quite slow and mellow, and builds up into an epic ballad-ey chorus, and mellows out near the end again.

"Bleed It Out" - 'Shinoda deals with the verses, while Chester sings the very anthemic chorus. Again, more clapping in the drum beat, I gotta admit, it's catchy. Would be fun live.

"Shadow Of The Day" - Chester - Slow and mellow song throughout, another epic ballad-fest. Catchy sing-along lyrics.

"What I've Done" - Surely you all know this one by now. The singing sounds rather 'pop' - like it was almost written as their single for the album.

"Hands Held High" - 'Shinoda's song - Religion-fueled anti-war/anti-bush rap with a chorus of the whole band singing "Aaaaameeeennnn.. Aaaaameeeennnn" Hmmm. I do not approve.

"No More Sorrow" - Chester - A heavy metal-fest throughout. Love this one - very heavy, powerful guitar riff, really doesnt sound like LP from the start, very attitude-ey song, definately my favourite of the album.

"Valentines Day" - Chester again - The first 2/3 of this song reminds me of "My December", but it breaks out into a powerful (regrettably quite angsty) finish.

"In Between" - A slow and calm song with actual real singing from 'Shinoda, with some light backing vocals from Chester. I'm suprised to hear a song like this from Mike, but it does actually suit him. The lyrics seem a little repetetive at times, since it's a bit of a chorus-fest. I dont think it really has verses as such..

"In Pieces" - Starts off feeling quite cold, with Chester's angsty voice in full swing. Quite a whiney song, but LP's new upbeat sound shines through. Slowly builds up into a powerful crescendo, like "Valentine's Day". A flash from the past of angsty songs with a fresh new overall sound.

"The Little Things Give You Away" - Starts off with just Chester singing, slowly builds up to have all(?) of the band members singing in harmony. An epic ballad-ey end to the album, leaving you feeling fulfilled.

Overall, a pleasant listen, catchy lyrics, plenty of anthemic songs, a new ballad-ey sound, less rapping, more politics, more metal, less DJ-bullshit, more guitars, more pwnage.
I'm not gonna be shallow and give it an X / 10 score, just take my word for it. If the above sounds to your liking, fetch it up and have a listen.

So, not Linkin Park anymore?

Damn.

I'll listen, but will probably stick with Meteora/Hybrid Theory.

Downloaded and listened. I agree with most of fallout's assessment.

It's more of a solely rock album. Hip-hop takes the spotlight in only 2 songs out of 12 and DJing is just not there, unless it's very difficult to notice- all I heard Hahn do was play normal keyboards. It's nothing like Hybrid Theory or Meteora which wrapped metal around the rap and beats. This is a pure rock album with rap thrown in to keep those who loved LP for the hip-hop interested. If you're after that aspect then you won't find it here. I've decided to listen to it again and not think: "What's this in terms of LP?" but instead think: "What's this in terms of generic rock albums?" In that sense, I'm liking it so far.

It was the DJ-bullshit, which was giving LP that original sound. Now it's gone. Shinoda raps a lot less. I don't like the new album. Duh, I even hate it.

I agree, i don't like this album aswell, because, well, they changed their style completely. They're might as well have changed their bandname.

Pinky Fag!

BTW. "Session" from Meteora is the best of their songs yet. Most of the others are crap.
