Machinae Supremacy + Anime
« on: August 25, 2014, 08:43:26 am »
I think the creation of Anime has to be my next artistic evolution. For videos, for maybe making Phantom Shadow into a movie (insanely ambitious I know but it's just a thought), though I really have no idea where I would start. If I had some people who knew what they were doing would be one thing, but right now it's just me checking out art styles and trying to get a grip on digital animation workflow for 2D / Anime.

It's my job to keep SID elite.

Cool idea, would fund! :) This might be something to start a fundraiser for when you have a clear vision of what you want to do, or maybe this would be funded by spinefarm? :)

Believing in a zombieman from outer space who is his own father is pretty funny, but that's not what MaSu is about //yas

Awesome idea, but it's a very hard and time consuming thing. I only made animations using 2D sprites but sometimes a 10-12 minutes long thing needs 3-4 months of work without pause.

Back when I first started moving away from the "oh, I heard this on the radio so I like it" mentality and developed my own tastes in music, one of the things that drew me to Daft Punk was Interstella 5555. I still get tingles of nostalgia whenever I listen to those tracks, recalling the story portrayed in the movie.

If you guys did something like this with Phantom Shadow, and it were executed properly, I might explode from happiness. Of course, starting with a somewhat smaller scope as a proof of concept is probably more realistic. In any case, if you embark on such an endeavor, I'll contribute what I can in an effort to insure that it happens.
Now re-engaging lurk mode.

Man I wish I could help - I can draw the draws but can't actually animate 'em :(. It'd be super rad though to see. Bonus points if there are lots of rad cyborg ladies blowing shit up haha!

If there will someday be a Phantom Shadow animated movie or something, I personally hope it'll not be anime.
I hate anime. I don't like the art style, and the conventions anime usually seems to follow really rub me the wrong way. Too much posturing, bullshit and nonsense. I know exceptions exist, and I like stuff like Cowboy Bebop since it's not so overtly anime-y.

Now, I don't know how much of all that even applies here.
I don't know how "anime-y" you're looking to make.... well, whatever it is you might end up making.
I'm just here to say that for my part - my own little insignificant part - I hope the answer would be "not very".

Anime is pretty broad. Not sure I would say Cowboy Bebop is "less" anime than something like Dragon ball. I will totally agree that Cowboy Bebop is inifnitely better though. I think I get what you mean though, since there are many sort of "cookie cutter" anime series aimed at a large demographic that pretty much wants more of the same... (sort of like what "normal" TV does with soap operas).

For me personally I would love a quality anime with a theme from MaSu, though of course a quality production is that much more expensive/difficult to do than a run of the mill anime with long poses, blue screened (the background, not the technique for superimposing a person on a different background) attacks and almost carbon copy background characters.

Listening to Phantom Shadow I caught myself thinking that this should've been an anime :P
I would love to see it animated with the quality and care of Studio Ghibli, or the guys who made Kill La Kill ;)

I have never been good at line-art, that is the stem of comics and animation.

I really support the idea Rob. It is quite ambitious and it will require a lot of time, effort, resources and most of all patience. Of course the result will be something truly great to remember and probably not only for masu fans!  :)
I put some thought into it, and because of the size of the project, a small start would be an ideal beginning. Something like a manga or a light novel is much easier and faster to create, and it will catch attention so afterwards the higher goal (anime) can be reached.

Studio Trigger is like my all time fave. Can't go wrong when Hiroyuki Imaishi is involved haha. It'd be rad if there was a Machinae Supremacy video done by them someday - they do action shit far better than anyone else imo. Trigger is made up of a lot of ex-Gainax members so it makes sense.

My suggestion would be a visual novel.
- you can include sound and music
- you can have a certain level of interactivity, if you want
- you can have an entirely different level of length, depth, character development etc. than a self-made movie/animated series could ever have (mostly for budget reasons).
- most things need to be drawn only once and the rest is  'just' scripting.

There are possibly even more advantages.

[THIS finally made me register. Hi everyone! Prepare for a long one. ;)]

Emotional part of the post:
Yay, MaSu! Way to go! My very first thought after listening to "Phantom Shadow" was something like "This ought to have a full-length anime or CGI visualization". Honestly, the world deserves another "Interstellar 5555"-style masterpiece, and PS will be just a perfect base for it, since it's already so conceptual, whole and story-driven. It's definitely a must-be and I'm sure, that we here at MaSu community will show you full support by any means necessary (crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, advertising - you name it). Looking forward to "Phantom Shadow - The Movie"!

Rational part of the post:
Making a full-length quality video from scratch and without proper experience and connections will most probably take a lot of time and resources, like, REALLY a lot. Plus many things will depend on the exact way to do the whole project. I see 3 most possible ways to do it, based on time, money and the degree of MaSu involvement in the process:

1. Making the whole thing strictly by yourself, maybe with the help from the community, but with minimal external involvement possible. That's pretty much as all MaSu official videos are made now.
Pros:
- the project will be under full band's control and the outcome will be totally MaSu-ish in every possible aspect
- this option is rather cheap
Cons:
- will take a huge amount of time and personal resources from MaSu, slowing all the other their activities, delaying the next album, canceling a few possible gigs, etc.
- the result may not be as good as everyone'd expect to. Sad but true, that's where 99% of such enthusiasm-based projects end up. I'm not saying it will necessarily be bad, but it won't be very good either, due to the simple lack of professionalism among its makers
- the project will be at risk of being cancelled eventually, wasting everyone's effort and expectations. And the more time will pass, the higher the chances will be. That's another bane of self-made projects - they tend to have a good start, but an awful finish, if there is one at all

2. MaSu themselves or MaSu's label can make a contract with an animation studio of their choice and let the professionals do the thing.
Pros:
- the result will surely be of high quality, since the professionals are doing it
- it won't take very long this way, probably 1-1,5 years from start to finish
- the band is free to do other awesome stuff
Cons:
- expensive way of doing things
- MaSu won't have any involvement or control over the situation. They'll provide music and ideas, yes, but the rest will depend solely on the bunch of other people, who may not get the thing at all. The result may end to be not so MaSu-influenced and not exactly what we want it to be. Knowing how principial Rob is about involvement of MaSu in their projects and such things as the creative freedom, I doubt that's really an option at all

3. Daft Punk style of doing things. MaSu needs to find a person or a group of persons, who is already part of anime industry (ranobe writers, mangakas, animators, etc.) and who may get interested in the idea of PS Movie and show it a full support. Daft Punk got lucky [puns! puns everywhere! 8)] finding Leiji Matsumoto and inspiring him with their music, resulting in "Interstellar 5555". You should probably try to do the same or at least something similar, since that's clearly where you're aiming at. The problem is, whom exactly to try to contact. I'm not a specialist in this field at all, but if you want my wild guess, I would try to reach someone like Reki Kawahara, the author of Sword Art Online and Accel World. This guy seems to be all about videogames and technology and you may have a lot in common. Who knows, maybe he's even listening to MaSu!
Pros:
- MaSu gets a partner and a co-author, who knows how the stuff is actually done. They discuss the ideas and details, then the partner uses his resources and connections to get things working. Meanwhile MaSu and even the community can control the process and do some sort of QA to make sure everything is the way we want it to be. This way leaves MaSu in control of the most parts of the project, freeing them from the parts they're not very good at
- the work is still done by professionals, so the quality is expected to be high
- it will, of course, take some time, money and personal efforts, but reasonable amounts of them
Cons:
- this way is pretty tricky to fulfil, lots of things can go wrong or unexpected
- everything really depends on the luck of finding a good partner, who can BOTH be interested in your ideas AND provide tools necesarry for their realization

As you may have guessed, personally I'd take the third way, but after all it's up to you to decide, what suits you best. Hell, it's even up to you to read this long and probably boring post! :) Anyway, wish you luck with this one and keeping my fingers crossed for you!

TL;DR part of the post:
The idea is awesome, the realization can prove to be very difficult and time-consuming and can be executed in several ways. Good luck with the project though, if it IS actually started someday.

P.S. CYA in November in Russia! :D

Welcome to the forums! ^^

I don't really have much to contribute to this discussion as I have watched very little anime - the genre isn't really my thing.

That said, I'd probably still watch this to see the level of polish Rob can put on something related to my favourite band :)
