Old skoolin' yo!
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:04:56 am »
Allright, the new game department is a bit dry lately.  My solution? OLD SCHOOL!

Right now im rocking some Megaman X (1-3, playstation games dont exist in my book) and Final fantasy VIII.

What old school you into right now/ in the near future?

Right now I have pulled out my Gamecube because I've wanted to play Skies of Arcadia Legends. For some reason that RPG is freaking addictive and probably one of the few RPGs I've actually played multiple times. I hope that can be considered old school.

For a bit older though I've been playing through Mega Man 3 again on my NES :D

What is considered old school? More than 10 years old? Early 90's? Older?

Anyway, I'm replaying Thief: Gold and Thief: the Metal Age. Again. (they are on GoG go get them they are the best) I've also been thinking about firing up Master of Orion II again and maybe trying to get a multiplayer game or two going with some friends.

Gradius III for SNES is probably my fallback "old school" game. I pull it out from time to time to kick some ass.

FF7 might make an appearance on my TV again soon, though. (You reminded me I hadn't played it in a while when you mentioned VIII, Moheeheeko.)
Now re-engaging lurk mode.

I totally missed out on the oldschool times. I started playing video games with the 1st Tomb Raider on pc. And I often visited a friend from school (kindergarten?) when I was little to play N64 Mario.

Speaking of oldschool... Jack Tramiel died. He made my childhood better. Damnit.
Oi, is this when I get a huge sig-image, start whining about "moar sid" and make nonsensical arguments to no good?

Eventhough Legend of Grimrock only came out like a week ago, apart from the graphics it's goddamn oldschool as all hell. It's also a bloody awesome game.

As a summary, it's a RPG of the "grid based dungeon crawler" subgenre, akin to ancient games like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder.
I will point out that I never even played either of the aforementioned old games, or any others of the sort, so I'm not looking at Legend of Grimrock through any rose-tinted nostalgy glasses. And I'm still loving it to bits.

Anyone who wants a game that has some proper challenge and actually clever puzzles, check it out.

Update!

Destroyed said games (again) now on to others.  Working on Super Metroid, lined up i've got Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and UN Squadron. (can you tell I love my SNES?)

A game I find most people either missed or forgot about is Little Samson. It's got some good old skool platforming with a little bit of a Trine feel to it (you switch between 4 characters each with different abilities). Got a good Megaman feel to it.

A wild old timer appears! Hay!

Oh, and that sounds pretty cool.
