wtf Captcha?
« on: September 04, 2011, 06:33:52 pm »

Can you even tell me what the... thing... on the left is, much less how I'm supposed to enter it in the keyboard?

I thought it was musical notes.. but there arne't enough lines.. are there?

It's at that point when I hit the "get new words" button. Honestly, at least 70% of the words ReCAPTCHA gives me seem to be illegible, by me at any rate.

That's kind of the point.. and that's exactly what I did...

I'm just trying to figure out why or how they thought that was a word. :o

Also thought you guys might get a LUL out of it.

Indeed, I did chuckle. Thanks for that.

I would also find it interesting to know what that word was supposed to be and exactly what operations were performed to make it look like that.

Off-topic: Similarly, there are times (usually in a video game) where something really weird happens and I think, "I wanna see the math behind what the fuck just happened." For example, the simultaneous beat-downs that commonly occur in Halo Reach. How does it determine the force vectors that send both players' bodies flying at seemingly random angles?

Yes.

reCAPTCHA works by having a massive database of scanned books and words where OCR software failed.
When you request a captcha, it shows you two words: One it already knows (in your case the "rydraf"), and the other one it doesn't. In order to verify you as a human, you just have to enter the word it already knows. The other value is probably saved and verified by others as well, until reCAPTCHA is certain what it means. Then it is used to digitize the book where it came from.

In your case, you just got a "thing" from some book that was mistakenly identified by the OCR software as a word. You could have just entered "trololol rydraf" and the captcha would have been verified just fine.
We're open to such things, we've even talked many times about doing it with Inja, but in a way that's redundant because we can already get Erica

Cool! I didn't know that, but it explains a lot of weird captchas I've gotten over the years.

That, and how I've managed to scrape through the weird ones.
