ur not so much pedantic pet, as a showoff - I'm an english student too and I've never even heard the term ellipses! But then I don't exactly WORK or anything....

Nehoo, if punctuation disappeared 2mrw they'd be the only things I'd miss  :(

*grumbles and shifts*  Oh.. wait.. sorry..

Sorry guys My RL sucks bigtime.  My grandmother is dying of cancer, and frankly there are more important things on my mind than chatter in a forum.

As much as I love you guys, I'll be just checking in now and again for I don't know how long.

Bear

LaserT, was the axe sharpened??? Did you use the blunt side??

~Look at his axe~

Sharp side? I don't have a sharp side. I have a stick with padding on the end. Is that not right?

btw. I think Bearfoot died again. Bearfoot? Bearfoot?!

There is one thing in this world I hate more than pedantic english students. That being said, that one thing which it is, is that I am one. "..." are used actually to indicate that something follows, or proceeds the text it is connected to, but is omitted.

Such as in the example:
"...and then the cows flew."

It is obvious that something had been omitted. They can also be used to indicate a dry, tired, or drawn out tone in speech.

Such as in the example:
"The day grows weary... my legs are sore... and my eyes droop with fatigue..."

Although nothing was omitted, the pause caused by the ellipses in reading (partly due to the anticipation of something, as well as the dissapointment of something being omitted) creates a sense of fatigue.

This was my lesson of the day. If you wish to learn more; you may contact me at (905) 330-7340. Or by email at sfidler@rogers.com
