I'd say listen to their newer stuff first, then progress backwards. That's kinda how I do it when I discover a new artist, that way, I probably won't be disappointing if it doesn't sound quite the same.

(BFMV's newest album is their best, and The Crusade is Trivium's best. Both are IMOs of course)

If I "discover" a new band it's usually because I heard a song I liked, so I'll listen to that album first, being that in most cases the songs are similar in ways, or at least follow a theme. After that I'll read about what they used to sound like or what they sound like now, and determine from that, if I can.

It's no difference if I start with their newest stuff, and then realize that the older stuff is much better. But in my opinion, a band's sound changing throughout their career is only a good thing as long as they don't just sell out (Come on MaSu, it's about time you start playing psychedelic black metal or use bagpipes or something, the SID metal sound is getting old)

Anyway, In Flames' older albums are the best ones, the period from The Jester Race to Clayman is a Holy one, after that they became trendy and went with clean vocals and stuff to sound modern and radio-friendly. They're more an enterprise than a band now, but they're so talented as composers that they still make good albums.

That's usually how I do first as well, although very seldom is it that I like a bands older music from the get-go.

when im listen to it for the first time, it totally sad nothing to me... totally fucked up in the ass, but then later after it gets some rounds its totally gown on me, and im really liked it now.

its a bad ass album.

I've received it yesterday, been listening to it non-stop since then, and yeah it's badass as hell ! Killer riffs and melodies, extremely modern approach, it is mind-blowing.

I don't think I consider it better than Come Clarity, but it's definitely better than Reroute to Remain and Soundtrack to your Escapce.

Just listened to it over a bottle of Zinfandel.

"Sleepless again" and "I'm the Highway" are the only songs I really enjoyed on first listening. Also "The chosen Pessimist" is quite nice.

I might come to the same conclusion as tomas.

It's the same for me, but I am still getting a hang of it, I mean, I liked it a bit when I first got it, but now, I just love some of the songs, and I am getting the hang of the other songs too, so-to-speak.

"Alias" is probably my favorite right now.

Yeah well the emolyrics appeared on this album, I think that's to enlarge their american teenagers fanbase, along with the metalcorish parts in some of their songs.

I hate the concept of "emo" lyrics, almost every song ever ever has emotional lyrics, the "emo" genre didn't invent them, but just added the whiney 17 year old vocals etc stigma to it.
