08 October 2007: Big News
Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the
following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally
free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have
been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the
business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very
different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a
direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate.
Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008.
Exciting times, indeed.

It seems they have canceled their record label contract..
Well as for the question of the topic i can say, musicians do. They need to get their cds in the stores, now i dont quite see NIN driving the cd delivery busses all over the world to put them in the store..

firstly, thats not a "followup", thats what he said to announce it.
secondly, nothing was cancelled. with the release of the remix album next month, trents fufilled the contract he originally signed with interscope 18 years ago. he's now free to distribute and create music exactly how he wants. which i think is great, because im waiting for the followup to yearzero. and with his hatred of overpriced shit in music shops, i can guarantee he'll be almost giving his work away.

It seems a lot of big-time artists are going independent nowadays (the other at the moment being Radiohead)

perhaps this will be the beginning of something big.

can't wait for the un-labeled NIN ;)

(ditto to new Radiohead in 2 days!)

Firstly, it IS a follow up because it explains in detail what this tread is about, and not the link, and secondly, i said it 'seems they canceled'.
L2R.

Well going independent isn't always a good thing though. They are now forced to record in a different studio for one, and the tours may be a problem aswell. Though, as for NIN, i think they'll get it right.

Studios aren't a big problem today. There are a lot of independant studios, and I don't even talk about home studios, software solutions, etc.

He recently disbanded his tour group (as good as it was), he said to cut down on costs and do something different. I guess this is why.
That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.
