I started a band with a few friends of mine about five years ago, I tihnk..
I wanted to play the drums, but who played what didn't really matter, because none of us had any experience with our instruments what so ever.
I quickly started getting ideas for songs, so I started fiddling with the bass guitar something like three years ago, playing melodies and stuff for the other band members, trying to get them into my general idea of what our next smash hit should sound like.
I moved on to guitar about a year ago, I think.. Could be two. (I'm a complete goldfish.)
I still play the drums in my band, but when I'm presenting new material I always play the guitar.
I've got two guitars now that I play daily and I've gotten quite competent.
Sadly, I don't really play my bass anymore.

Tl; Dr:
Drums: Five-ish years.
Bass: Three years or so.
Guitar: About a year or two.

Diferrent strokes for different people i suppose, though i am realising more and more now in the music world that being able to play what you read off manuscript, drums, piano, guitar, etc.. is very important, and can help your money troubles :) i.e. if you can't read random music set down in front of you, that's fair. To be honest i'm only learning how to now (getting it drilled into my at Uni) but if you did yourself, self discipline could be your key to success :)

Wish i had self discipline.

yeah, there is that word once again, self discipline... why would i want to sit down and study music when I can just play and have fun??? dammit... know I need it to be better, but there is so much I want to learn. (practicing pinch harmonics atm)

Hey, Prince doesn't know how to read music...
That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.

Prince knows how to read to some extent, he just can't sight read.

Self discipline comes in when you wanna have fun, but you don't wanna live on the streets.. :'(

Let's see ... I've been playing piano for 4 years, but I suuuuuck at it. I'm not a perfect sightreader either.

BUT i LOVE music theory. I've had music theory for 17 years! But it's all on the paper, so I guess it doesn't matter?

Oh, and I've played steel drum for 2 years. It's easy and fun  ;D
