when you're playing live solo guitar and vocals, can you just plug your vocal microphone into your guitar amp and use the same amp for the guitar and the vocals?

Beacuse you can't afford a new amp or didn't want to spend lots of money on one maybe?

while you're at it, try what happens when you put distortion pedal between the mic and the amp. and sing

what has buying a new amp got to do with using it as a microphone port? i just dont think its a smart idea. what if you want the vocals louder, but not the guitar? complete lack of control.

I've used a splitter lead before to play guitar and use a mic in the same amp, but it doesn't work that well. Depending on the amp the sound will 'chop up' between the two whenever one makes a noise, and it always gets distorted, and yes, the lack of control is a problem.
At a proper venue they should put your mic through a PA system anyway, but I have played some pretty ghetto DIY shows and we've had to resort to stuff like that. I really don't recommend it.
