old.  Tesla did it almost 100 years ago.

"Nikola Tesla with his invention, a wireless lightbulb powered by the electric field surrounding it."

The Tesla effect. A "world system" for "the transmission of electrical energy without wires" that depends upon electrical conductivity was proposed by Tesla. Through longitudinal waves, an operator uses the Tesla effect in the wireless transfer of energy to a receiving device."

this new technology is more of a "beam" of electricity that's aimed at the desired object.

Tesla's is a field.

lol, cripe.

all field vs beam arguements aside.

imagine walking down the sidewalk with a low power iPod.  You notice your favourite Cafe has a "WiTricity available!" sign in the window.

you go inside for some coffee, talk with friends for an hour, exit with a fully charged iPod.

GAWD YES!

while theoretically awesome, think about the cost.

and then realize that fuck, if you're at starbucks, they already charge you up teh ass for coffee and give out free internet, comfy chairs, nice music, and a great atmosphere, so what the hell?  free electricity, too!

And cancer, probably. You exit with a fully charged iPod and cancer.

That aside, this technology is horribly inefficient. I wouldn't expect to see it until they can bump that 40% up to something reasonable.

That was cell phones and it was baseless FUD, much like my cancer joke. http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/22/news/wireless23.php

Apparently bees actually like power lines: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn7910

All this new technology shit is useless unless it is somehow helping people invent the hoverboard and/or X-Wing.
