Free things to read online
« on: April 30, 2007, 09:50:01 pm »
There has been threads about web-comics, web-games and web-movies but none yet bout web-books. So, here goes. I guess that some (or all) of you have heard about these. Still I find them worth mentioning for three reasons. It may be possible that someone has not heard about them and also it would great to share recommendations if someone has found interesting reading from those pages. Also it might be possible that there's more places like these and so I could find out even more great reading material. Here goes my two links:

http://www.scribd.com
Has thousands of pdf formatted magazines, books and publications. Very interesting, fun reading, wide variety of stuff.

Some of the shortest (mind the latter one) publications as example:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/5107/They-didnt-study
http://www.scribd.com/doc/799/15-Things-You-Dont-Know-About-Your-Penis
...and one longer:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/7444/Survival-Evasion-and-Recovery-FM-21761-1999-Field-Manual

http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page
Has thousands of ebooks from past. Especially older publications are well presented. Many classic novels (like War of the worlds and Last Mohican for example), history, philosophy and so on... Overall good stuff. All texts are presented in txt format which is good thing when considering compatibility.

Project Gutenberg is the golden standard here. It has a huge collection of classic books from before ca 1920, in addition to the txt format most or all the books are in, many can be found formatted in html with images, and a couple even as mp3s.

I have read couple of novels online and I must admit that they can stress eyes somewhat. Reading them from laptop's screen does not "hurt" so much so I prefer it if I really have to read it from screen. If I find something really good or useful I normally print them. It's friendly to eyes and convenient otherwise also (can't drag my PC to toilet for example...) Of course I buy books from time to time, even if I have them as digital copy. Especially old books are one of my passions. They feel and smell wonderful. I like the way the pages feel in fingers and how the paper looks like. I like old finnish language very much as well as how they typed in old times with fraktuura-fonts (the german type of writing). I would love to get some really old books in my collection but they are out of my reach, they just cost too much. But some of them I can acquire online - even if I print they don't feel the same but at least I can read them and that's good enough for me, usually.

Anyways... Online books are really good since some of those books I'm interested in are hard to come by - they are quite impossible to get (because they are rarities) or just costs way too much (for various reasons). So whenever I want to read something that would be hard to acquire by other means I try to find them from internet. Usually I do find something : not necessarily what I was looking for but something similar and just as much interesting. From web (and especially those sites I mentioned) I have found tremendous amount of good quality books I'm really interested of. Sometimes I use P2P networks but it does not work so well, usually. I guess people just don't have or just won't share old books (or their digital copies).

Oh, by the way. Just happened to find out this site :
http://www.classichorrorstories.com/

Some really great horror stories there. And they are not that long they could give your cancer, I hope :D

I'm not too big a fan of reading books on the computer screen. Short stories work just fine, longer things tend to be a little too tiring (tried reading The Picture of Dorian Gray, never even got halfway through).
On the subject of horror, check out http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/ for H.P. Lovecraft stories (you know, Cthulhu and friends ;))

Try printing them. It works fine and doesn't cost even that much if you're able to print 4 pages in one A4. That, of course, depends on font side and how big book you're going to print.

Actually, you're right. They became public domain earlier this year.
