precisely.. and just cause it's corporate-manufactured doesn't make it complex. if anything, more thought than ever goes into each bit of it, because it all tries to be perfectly engineered to be enjoyable at low volumes or bitrates (like on the radio in the mall) or very high volumes (in clubs) or in normal quality (on mtv). Have you really paid attention to a britney spears song? there's a lot going on, whether or not it's necessarily enjoyable (and if it weren't so widely liked it might be considered much more enjoyable than it is).

i dunno. i'm just trying to avoid any sort of musical elitism disguised as science.

There's a formula for most of those songs. The hook comes within the first thirty seconds, etc. The sounds, synths, beats, and what have you aren't original, they're taken from a veritable grab bag of sounds. Sure, they're complex, but the reason for that is that somewhere in an office marketing executives and various different kinds pf psychological and musical specialists were congregating to decide what would sell best and top the charts for a few weeks before they could recycle it and throw out a new song.

Besides, engineering the music is a different aspect of the subject altogether.  :P If you want to bring that in then there's a lot going on in -any- song, short of those produced in a garage.

When I referred to complex, I meant content.

Edit: Keep in mind, I never said none of these kinds of things happen in other music. There's plenty of metal bands out there that were picked up just because they sounded like an existing one and someone figured it could make money. But even those can be more sincere than most of the popular music that is manufactured today.

That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.

I think the thread's name; the statement is wrong. The question should be, 'smart people listen to metal ?'

Or maybe not.

I agree with Rad, the claim being made doesn't seem to be that listening to metal will make you smarter. Simply that smarter people are more likely to listen to metal.
What meaning has my life that the inevitability of death cannot destroy it?

This statement is incorrect. Metal does not make you smart nor do smart people listen to it.
Take shaun, for example. :P

Good point.

But in every statement, there are exeptions.

But in every statement, there are exeptions.

I've never found an exception to that, you know?
(i) There will come a day when nothing you did matters. But it is not today. Here and now, you are alive.
(ii) Live well under your own authority.
(iii) Abolishing suffering is impossible. Lessening suffering is mandatory.

Yeah, my foremost guess is that the reason behind this is that the smart people just look beyond the 'loudness' and actually see or feel the diversity and the depth ofthe music, rather than just shoving it off for 'alternative'

It sounds pretty BS to me

it's whatever makes you move your feet/head, you don't need to be smart to realise metal does that on a large scale =D
But if one day we meet together while I'm drunk, I promise you to draw a big group sex picture including a lot of forumites. :D

I agree, heavy music usually helps me "break the pressure" (no, not wanking, you perv) and thus makes me more comfortable -> efficiency -> victory
