The Red Button
« on: March 02, 2007, 07:34:36 am »
One day, you are knocked out, kidnapped, and wake up in a dark room, sat in an uncomfortable chair. You see infront of you a wall of TV's showing various news channels from different countries around the world. You see a red button on a small pedestal infront of you, and there is a single man dressed in black, wearing a balaclava. You see he has a gun on a waist holster, and as he speaks to you, you understand that he means business.
He gives you two choices.

1. (Yes) Press the red button infront of you, and end the world. The mysterious man tells you that pressing this red button would singlehandedly bring about the Apocalypse, killing everyone on the entire planet, including both you and him.

2. (No) Dont press the red button, and face your death. He tells you that if you dont press the button, you will be shot to death on the spot.

Do you press the button, bring everyone down with you - end everyones suffering, or do you save the life of billions by sacrificing your own life? Explain your reasoning for your choice.

EDIT: Im not going to reply to this thread til I feel its nescassary. Im gonna let you guys discuss it amongst yourselves for a while. Note: you're supposed to look into this as deeply as possible, as Drain and Sativa might tell you from what I've said so far on MSN. Try to imagine every obscure possibility.

It would be pointless to say yes; you're gonna die anyway, why bring others with you?

He may press it anyways, and end the world, but I won't do it myself.
That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.

You tell him this type of scenario has already been thought up (excluding Apocalypse button) and that he should go see the Saw movies.

I would pretend like i was gonna push it, but then not. If it looks like he gets all scared and off-balance, i attack. if he calls my bluff or reacts quickly, nothin lost. the end.

I'll press the button to possibly end the world because it just so happens that the world is quite shit. Or maybe it'll just kill me. Meh.

Is there a sign saying "Do not press this button"? I'd press it then.

Try to imagine every obscure possibility.

I tell him I won't press the button. He draws his gun and DAMN! He should've had that bypass surgery as he's now on the floor suffering from a fatal heart attack. I leave the room and go home, realising that i have stirfry for dinner.

I suppose that works too. But, on your way home, you get run over by a milk float, and die in hospital an hour later.

The universe has a way of .."course-correcting" itself.

I'd press it because if it's a bluff and it doesn't end the world no where in the sentence of the 'yes' option says i'll be shot so taking the risk would be my selfish act towards humanity
But if one day we meet together while I'm drunk, I promise you to draw a big group sex picture including a lot of forumites. :D
