Power metal?
« on: February 02, 2007, 12:45:00 pm »
Power metal.

We know it, we love it; but we wants more.

I've been searching various forms of music (last.fm, dc++, wikipedia) in search of something which can touch me the way i've been touched by sonata arctica (which is to say, most inappropriately). I have picked up several artists which i had not known of before, but it appears that sonata is the only major group to be as truly powerfully metal as they are. Stratovarius is nice and all, but they're like listening to the beatles instead of led zeppelin. Dragonforce is rather silly, and edguy, kamelot, and even rhapsody are just missing something. Perhaps it's the splendid soprano or whatever that tony kakko is capable of, or maybe just the dextrous keyboarding, but can anyone point me in the direction of a band they like as much as (or nearly so) as sonata, assuming of course that you also quite like sonata?

i'm partial to folk metal, foreign languages, and melody. Basically I'm looking for a ramped up version of warcry or mago de oz, in the sonata style.

not too shabby. i can imagine a live show being fairly insane.

and although the non-screaming guy sometimes sounds like a homestar runner character, i think i'll mark them down.

next!

I don't really like power metal, the voices are too high for me, and their outfits are somewhat.. iffy.

Doesn't the outfits atleast disturb you ?

EDIT : Added pictures.

That's not power metal. That's hair metal.
That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.

Of course they're ridiculous. Here is Mago De Oz (they are spanish, as are WarCry):

And as I've mentioned in other threads, I'm sure as hell not looking for lyrical masterpieces; it's not what they say, it's how they say it.

Falconer seems promising. I will pursue.

edit: sample of Sonata's lyrics, from one of my favorite songs (The End of This Chapter)

I looked in the light, I sat in your coalmine
The promise they made, I should keep?
Make sure that we would never meet

I can't remember
The promise I made so deep

Dream Evil, if you like newer Power Metal.

You can download a couple songs here: http://www.centurymedia.com/us/media.php?artist_ID=14&x=49&y=5
I'd suggest listening to 'Children of the Night' first, or maybe 'Fire, Battle, In Metal!'.

I got into these guys at about the same time as I got into MaSu.

i should have mentioned BG up top; I'm not a huge fan, but I did acquire some more last night during my p2p rampage. I am suspicious of savage circus, but will check them out. Kotipelto is also in the queue (i listen to everything i download at least once, in the order it was downloaded.). I'm pretty sure I'd classify D&W similarly to Dragonforce, but I guess i could afford to try again.
