something just occured to me.
in Red Steel, the crazy guys I shoot at in the head always call me "gaijin!"
with random obscenities and other helpful adjectives...

and then there's, of course, Gaijin right here in our forum.
what does it mean?
the best meaning I could draw from the game was "american"

It means "Foreigner", but in a more friendly way than we say. The literal translation would be gai (outside) jin (person), therefore there is no derogatory meaning behind the word, because it literally means "someone from outside of Japan". It's commonly used now to describe caucasians in Japan, but this is stupid.

Heh, I looked it up a while back when I wondered what Gaijin's name meant.

Ontopic, though - I've been bashing Dawn of War, and I won 15 games in a row last night :)

in much the same way that toilet paper is more like "toilet paper," not "ass-wiping fabric."

More FRIENDLY? Less friendly. Way less friendly. It's like the differance between "african american" and "niggaaaaah!", kind of. "Not-person" is pretty close.
Oi, is this when I get a huge sig-image, start whining about "moar sid" and make nonsensical arguments to no good?

The original meaning is non-derogatory but due to the growing extremism in racism it's now a common racist word for Japanese.

Or so the dictionary site I read says.. :)
