long words are always suspect... especially the fear of long words (only one p btw), which is only ever used in this context and which is essentially comprised of three redundant prefixes. a long word can be reasonably called "sesquipedalian;" literally "A foot and a half long." adding two more things meaning "big" doesn't help much.

lisp, yes. stutter also.

whether or not pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis has a hyphen is debateable, because again it is only ever used as an example of a big word. as i remember, though, it has a bit more of a reasonable background story.

so if we're going to let these through, might as well let chemicals through:

sodiummetadiaminoparadioxyarsenobenzoemethylenesulphoxylate.

or how about this one. (Scroll down)

Aye, the only use of these words is for people to talk about them like we are now and pretend we're all sort-of-intellectual types. It's all about bored people saying, I will make the longest word in the word and I'll do it by combining a load of other (usually Latin) words so it appears to have some form of legitimacy.

Actually, let's make the longest word in English which means "the state of being supremely awesome (like Machinae Supremacy) - it has to be longer than 189,820 letters long.

Now, wha'ts the Latin word for "cool"...

How about pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Longest word in the English dictionary and is a lung disease. Of course, if you had this lung disease you'd probably have quite a bit of trouble trying to tell someone else what disease you've got.
Pld, i laughed.

Don't make me start on you. Lately you're constantly whining about threads being offtopic and reporting things, eventhough there is a very active discussion. If a thread IS totally offtopic and derailed of spammy messages, the mods WILL see it and they will, sooner or later, take action. Let them do their job and stop with this. Do not take this personal, i'm just asking you to stop for the sake of others.

Generally I move offtopic posts to random because what ontopic would come from offtopic? This one I let to stay in general because I know some people just love words and it might be start of something funny and educational. I, being not native english speaker, like to learn new things of this excellent language. By letting this thread stay in General I hope that this stay ontopic and as such will create discussion about funny and weird words in english. Being ontopic does not mean always being boring. Especially when it's about cunning linguistics.
Random ramblings and furious feminine novels per versatility.

It does not sound funny unless you say it with it in your mouth.

I don't know if that was intentional but that almost looks like the sex practice. :P
