Firstly, i believe music started with song, not music. that being said, music as an asthetic entity tends to be enhanced more by musical lyricism than anything "meaningful." and who's to say that music without lyrics has no meaning? everyone reasonably capable of thought can recognize a sad/happy/suspenseful tune no problem. listen to large amounts of classical music, and it's like learning another language; you recognize the instrumental sounds of war, of peace, of love.

I find feelings in songs far more specific and describing. Like, I can read the story and thoughts of a gryphon flying aimlessly through raging storms in despair after having lost his loved one in a tragic accident involving an evil whom is far superior and will soon kill him. In a trance tune.

Trance doesn't have lyrics. The kinds with lyrics aren't music.

See, that's why I don't like lyrics. :(

exactly. plus you can get from it what you will instead of having to parse more or less concrete words. words are like the movie form of books.

Lyrics. Without them, a song would have no meaning. Sure, you can have an awesome instrumental but it just feels.. Hollow. The lyrics are what express the feelings in the song, you can interpret them however you want, whereas the music is just backing sound; sounds nice, does nothing really.

Put it this way - you see people quoting song lyrics, but do they ever quote guitar solo's? XD

Yep, in fact all the time.

Fallout. Once you start playing guitar and start to become a guitar geek and hang out with other guitarists,

Remind yourself of this conversation.

What's wrong with wanting a good combination of both? Or is that simply not an option? Is there really a whole world full of people listening  to crappy music just to hear the proper words, and people listening to kickass guitar while someone is shouting "PENIS!" into their ear continuously?

Agreed ^^

I just had a discussion with a friend about which is most important, the lyrics or the music.

Personally I think it's the music, but my friend said the lyrics.

So let me hear your opinions!

I think its a personal decision. If you just want to chill and relax, then music should be your choice.
But if you want to think about special themes or you like to think about things [weird Oo] then pick lyrics.

I personally like to think about lyrics, and what the musician(s) wanted to express. BUT i often decided to look for lyrics after i relaized that i like that song ;)

I choose music, because i'm Russian. I don't understand all of lyrics. For Russian bands i prefer lyrics.
Such as Everlost, Amatory, Тараканы (Roaches).

-WITH FLAMES WE REACH HEAVEN TONIGHT-
