Mind you, I find history in general interesting.
I find history interesting as well. Some think that it's boring because it requires lots of reading. And if someone is not good reader it might be hard to get "behind" facts. But if one has enough stamina it really pays of : history is gate to this day and to future as well. It's window to nations heart. Without knowing history one cannot truly understand nation. It helps lot in terms of self perception as well, knowing your roots. History is interesting and really worth effort.

And both our countries do have something in common at least: repeated attempts by the swedish to screw us over. Only difference is we actually held them at bay for a while (even stopping Charles XII just outside the fortress in my hometown, where he was eventually killed). But then they used their underhanded tricks and stole us from Denmark in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.  >:(
This remind me of history lessons at school. Especially well I remember this painting:
http://www.gotheborg.com/project/bild/carl_xii.jpg
Majestic and somehow sad symbol of one era ending .

Yes, Norway and Finland has many things in common (more than enthusiasm in heavy metal scene). And we have so much in common with Sweden as well. And we finns have some things common with russians as well. It's quite funny to think how horrible our common history is when we are practically if not brothers then at least cousins and it's been this hard to live in peace! Greed is terrible force. This days system is great - each nation can have their own country and everyone is trying to live in peace bothering no one. Or at least, we are not bothering each other too much, that is :D I just hope that this is how things will go in future as well.

I have often thought how weird history is. At WW2 Norway was defending side by side with british, french and polish troops against german troops. And to just thinking how Germany occupied Norway after heavy fights and of those terrible things Nazis did there. Resistance fighters fighting against them to the end and all. At the same time we finns were defending against soviets with help of those same germans - and all went well until Lapland War which led finnish troops to border of Norway! History is surely interesting. Although those things that happened are grim and terrible there is still some twist of black humour in it when you think it as terms of thousands of years. For example how finnish forces Haccapelites fighting in swedish army to conquer Germany and parts of Russia (Moscow for example) at 30 Years War and then hundreds of years later how it all was just opposite... Or how british and french naval forces fought against finnish coastal fortresses where we were fighting side by side by russians at Crimean War and then at WW2 situation was all different. There is something weird in our nordic countries. We are so small nations and still our history is everything else but small :D Finland's history and it's joining points to many nations history is often forgotten by other nations. Partly because we have been part of other empires so long. When in historical writings there is note about some fight or battle there is only reference to "russian" or "swedish" troops. It's technically right to do so since we were fighting at those nations ranks then. Downside is that that way most people will never know that those russians and swedes were actually of finnish breed and their battlecries were shouted in finnish. For most of modern people it does not mean a thing but those who heard those cries knew that finns were coming... They knew they were not russians or swedes but finns and it made a big difference for them.

Oh, well... at least perhaps we can cooperate if Sweden decides to expand its borders again ;)
I think we are late. They already have Machinae Supremacy ;)

Sorry about that random and inaccurate rambling about various things. This matter would have deserved more detailed and better written post but just right now I'm not capable of that. Our independence is complex thing - it's not just those 89 years but that story goes way beyond that. And in those 89 years there are so many details... Well, independence is very valuable thing for me but it's something I'm not that good writing of.

Thanks for the info, I really had no idae that Finland had been involved in so much warfare!

Dude, in the old days the entire north was pretty much one big battleground. Denmark vs Sweden, Norway vs Denmark, Denmark and Norway vs Sweden, Sweden vs Poland, Russia, Finland, your mom or whatever. What can I say? Us nordic countries loved our fighting. ;D

Move on to the Arabs. That's what we did. <<
That's the problem with heroes, really. Their only purpose in life is to thwart others. They make no plans, develop no strategies. They react instead of act. Without villains, heroes would stagnate. Without heroes, villains would be running the world. Heroes have morals. Villains have work ethic.

Yeah, inventing cricket was the singlemost tasteless crime against the universe ever.

(those who don't get it need to read some books containing hitchhikers)

Also there's 800 years of exploiting the land and people of Ireland.

But, atmittedly, that is nowhere near as bad as fucking cricket.
