Can't say I'm that surprised. He's had so many (self-inflicted) brushes with death, it's a wonder he made it this far.

Still, it's a sad day. He was a fun and engaged (and engaging) man, who truly cared for what he did. I have to admit, I loved his show when I was younger, and can still be entertained by it in smaller doses.

I remember rumours of his death circulating before though, and with the total lack of source control many newspapers have today, the rumours of his death may well be greatly exaggerated*. I doubt it, though, but Irwin would have been the perfect guy to circulate such a death rumour about.

*oh yes, newspapers have reported the death of living people before.

Me neither. The man was completely bonkers in regard to his personal safety. I was half expecting him to be eaten by a crocodile or bitten by a snake ages ago...

Sad that he's dead, though. He was a fun, reckless sort of guy to watch... and probably one of the world's best known environmentalists. Rest In Peace, Steve.

To die like that just sucks. I mean, come on, it couldn't have been a crocodile biting his head off or something?

Sucks to be his family right now :(

Yeah, that Stingray accomplished what many, many animals have longed to do for years... Still, you've got to admire him for what he was did for wildlife and dieing doing what he loved the most. He knew the dangers and was more than content to do it. I guess if you really understand these animals as much as he did, it would be a lot less dangerous than if you didn't know them at all.
He could've stopped after he became famous, after all he has a family now. But he just kept on going, doing what he believed in and died making a documentary.

It's like the second recorded time ever or something this has happened with a stingray too. :/

QFT.

It would also have been funny in an ironic sort of way if he had actually been eaten by a crocodile.

And as domo kun just said, it's only happened one or two times before that somebody's died from being stung by a stingray. It really sucks to die from such a thing (not that it doesn't suck to die by say getting hit by a car, though)...
