have you checked out (alientrap s game) Nexuiz? its a realy cool game (its free software (not freeware) multi platform, DarkPlaces - based, fps game.......)

Not much of a FPS fan, but the price is right. :)

I can run halflife 2 and Doom III with most of the settings on high.. I should be ok.  Save for the stupid ram.. *grumbles*

this was just in the new PC gamer as an example of a very impressive independent effort. they made it to show off their new engine, which also is publicly available... so there's another endorsement for you.

I found it to be meh due to what was for me overly good bots and a combonation of what I think is bad translation.. (Motor?  YOu mean gernade launcher?)  and the fact that none of the guns really looked like what thy were supposed to be.

that said,

Not bad for a non-payed indie effort though.

there are olmost always atlest 30 ppl playing online...

and one more thing.. it is based on the quake1 engien...
but there is olmost no code left from theat..
