I use pidgin www.pidgin.im as irc client. usually quakenet, just google for quakenet irc server.

You don't have to register mIRC. (When you open mIRC) An introductory window pops up with a bar. If the bar has filled up with red and is flashing, you have to wait a while before the "continue" button becomes avaliable.

no you are not...go into the File->Recent Servers->New Server Window, then File-> Select Server and scroll to either IRCnet or Quakenet and choose it and "random server"

then it will prompt you to input a channel name, in which you put #machinaesupremacy, if it does not prompt you, then go Commands->Join Channel, then input #machinaesupremacy

Then disconnect, go to options, where you type in your nick and email, press select server, go to quakenet

That's what happens! :o

That means you didn't select IRCnet or Quakenet server first...you need to be in the server before you can join a channel.

So just follow those steps again: File->Select Server then choose either. Then you can enter a channel

Well, that mostly depends on the time of the day, the day in question and also on the server you chose :). The Quakenet one is really active most of the time, and it has around double the amount of people compared to the ircnet one.
