Sirix > in the end, those children are monstruous musical machines (I consider a lot of them like that).
Not realy a disadvantage. Depends on the point of view. :p

[Edit]
And it depends on your instrument. Guitar is easier to violin for example, which expects extrem rigour from the musician. But in the end, with good bases, you can make what you want easily and with more pleasure than if you would try to descript it with a beginner's level.

Have you learned any other instrument before Sirix?

I have found having experience with other instruments really excels the learning curve, for example i played keyboard when i was 8-10, then 10-12 i played drums then 13-16 i played electric guitar and bass, now i'm back to keyboard i have such a better understanding of rhythm and chords on the keyboard with previous experience on it already i'm just teh 1337 ;)
But if one day we meet together while I'm drunk, I promise you to draw a big group sex picture including a lot of forumites. :D

I played Clarinet in grades 9 and 10... but I pretty much forget everything anyway.

that's it as far as musical experience goes... this is my first!

Not sure if anyone already suggested this, but get the Suzuki books. They help. A LOT.

Also look into the Essential elements books.

I've been playing Violin for five years now.  Just got my dead grandpa's violin, too.  ;)
It is not because of anything that can be seen or heard or handled, but because of something that is imagined. The place is not good for imagination, and does not bring restful dreams at night.

Best advice I can give you is get a tutor asap to avoid bad habbits with the Violin. Once you learn the basics and get some music theory, music reading, etc behind your belt you can go the self-taught route if you'd like, but until you learn to actual handle the instrument properly and get some music-theory and such learned I wouldn't recommend it.

Or just learn it yourself; probably takes a lot more time, but you're more likely to develop your own unique style.  8)

I would suggest learning the basics of music theory on a piano first, its better suited for begginers. The notes are all layed out on individual keys as opposed to sections of string... makes for a better noob to music interface.
