Well, if a joke has to be explained to you, then it loses a lot of it's potential to be funny, now doesn't it?

Not really. When jokes are explained, the funny side is revealed to the person who didn't understand, who can then see why it was meant to be funny in the first place.

Also the discussion about the joke enters a sort of meta level, allowing to gain a different perspective on the reasons and circumstances that made it funny in the first place.

Yes, but it still doesn't recieve the same response it would, were it to understood from the begining. It becomes more of a point of understanding than a point of humor, they may see the humor that lies there, but they don't apperciate it as much.

Yeah, I once used that as screensaver on my mobile phone... Until I realized that the battery life got wtfpwned and shortened by about 50%. Then I stopped using it as my screensaver. But it is still cool.
